His two-faced character is to blame: directly, Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde about two wheels. You could ride it for a long time and admire the complaisant disposition, and then accidentally open the gas to the fullest … And the gander at 6000 rpm turned into a furious horse! Not everyone could control it … These metaphors are for a red word. In fact, the bike was wonderful.

His story began in the 60s, when at the Kawasaki concern (ships, locomotives, airplanes, etc.) they seriously took care that his mark “does not fit the ear” of the average person. And then the company’s bosses decided to make it “ringing” - they launched the brand into the people on motorcycles.

Immediately after the Second World War, the aircraft engine department began producing motorcycle engines, and then complete motorcycles. But, frankly, these machines were not "ah": ordinary "workhorses", which by no means shone with either quality or technical parameters.

And the reorganization, perturbation, fever “take it out and put it down …” and “take it out” to fame: in the mid-60s, the engineers of the concern developed a couple of medium cubic motorcycles with 2-cylinder 2-stroke engines, with disc spools at the inlet: 250- cube Samurai and 350 cc Avenger (“Avenger”). Dashing brothers: the 31-strong Samurai had a speed of 165 km / h, and the 40-strong Avenger - 175 km / h. Not bad for the 60s? They torn any English “five hundred” of that time, and even a car with a more solid cubic capacity could kick their ass. And the rumor went …

Not only in Japan, motorcycles have met with a particularly enthusiastic reception in the United States. It was necessary to develop success - in large cubes. For the sake of this, the concern even bought Meguro, which produced a copy of the English 650-cc BSA sample of the 50s. Alas, the Americans with contempt turned away their faces from the "English-Japanese". And then the first sketches of the 4-cylinder 4-stroke engine appeared on the drawing boards … Again, a bummer! Spies reported: the motorcycle of the same configuration is about to release Honda. It’s now that the bosses would say: “So what ?!” And then they were very concerned about preserving the barely achieved uniqueness. And a new solution has ripened - to create a 2-stroke 500-cc machine, not inferior in dynamics to the devices of large cubic capacity.

There were two options: to increase the working volume of a 2-cylinder engine or to create a completely new 3-cylinder. We chose the second. Although such a scheme forced to abandon the disk spools at the inlet: there was nowhere to place a carburetor for the middle cylinder. In general, the engine device corresponded to the level of the then Japanese motor industry: a crankcase with a horizontal connector, aluminum cylinders with cast-iron sleeves, a 4-channel blowdown, a separate lubrication system. Such an innovation as electronic contactless ignition became revolutionary - for the first time for a serial road bike! It ensured a flawless start at any temperature. In fairness, I must say that at first the ultra-novelty was not reliable - so much so that a few years later a traditional contact system was installed on the motorcycle. But - just for a year: they soon created a second-generation electronic system, spared from "childhood growth diseases."

The frame of the motorcycle is in the best traditions of racing cars of that time: a tubular fully duplex design, with an “overlap” at the steering column. Alas, in the pursuit of weight reduction (the whole machine weighed 174 kg), the designers took too thin-walled pipes, which did not affect the rigidity of the chassis in the best way. Obviously did not correspond to the dynamics of the machine and the front two-jaw drum brake.

The debut of the super-Kawasaki took place in September 1968. The motorcycle was struck by the dynamics of the 500 cc engine - its 60 hp. they accelerated the bike to a speed of 190 km / h, and “a hundred” from a place he gained a little more than 4 seconds. But he struck not only with dynamics, but also with a slender appearance. Unusual, and therefore attractive was its asymmetry: two silencers on the right and one on the left. Pretty soon it became clear that this, to put it mildly, a car is not for everyone. No, and the "kettle" could well control it, but only on condition that it would never spin up the engine above 6000 rpm. Above followed an evil grab! Power jumped from 45 to 55 liters. with. in just 500 rpm. Now imagine: before entering the corner, you prudently switched to a lower gear, and in the middle of the turn you inadvertently crossed the “6000” limit - and the car reared up!

A lot of people were beaten in those Kavakhs. In addition to the explosive motor, deceit was added to it by a flimsy chassis and weak brakes. But in the right hands, a motorcycle in “racing from a traffic light” was able to “feed with dust” the driver of any car or motoik - even a Ferrari or the latest Honda CB750.

Therefore, they grabbed them - like hot cakes.

Naturally, the question immediately arose: is it possible to turn the most dynamic road motorcycle in the world into a racing one? Such a modification - under the H1R index - was born already in 1970. Almost serial engine managed to easily force up to 75 liters. with. And in the same season, New Zealander Ginger Molloy took second place in the World Championship in the 500 smz class. Not bad? And we must take into account that only Giacomo Agostini - a racer of the same outstanding level as Valentino Rossi is ahead of him.

A successful machine, as usual, became the ancestor of a whole family. It debuted in 1971: the 250-cubic S1 (32 hp, 168 km / h), 350-cubic S2 (45 hp, 178 km / h) and "became the" genetic "heirs of the 500 cc apparatus king of the hill”- 750 cc H2 (74 hp, 203 km / h). You may ask, how was the 74-strong beast handled if the 60-strong one was indomitable? It's simple: its description was much smoother (although not too much: it was not for nothing that the Americans called it the "rodeo bike"). He also did not gain much popularity because of his indefatigable appetite: 10-14 liters per "hundred" for a well-regulated motor …
