Everything is not so complicated: I increase the speed to 1500–2000 and - let's go. Again a jerk! Such is the nature of the RPD, a rotary piston engine with its own name "Renesis" (ZR, 2001, No. 7). Its characteristics (maximum torque - at 5500 rpm) and a tricky clutch drive provoke sharply, without gas discharge, skipping gears while still spinning the motor. After all, he gives maximum power after eight thousand.
More gas! The arrow slightly exceeded the mark of 9000, and a heart-rending squeal was heard in the cabin: it was time to turn on the next gear. But it’s better to slow down for now.
Yeah, scared? No, I know very well that in the discipline of controllability, the Mazda RX-8 is trained by very experienced teachers … but we are not at the training ground. However, you can immediately feel on the narrow winding paths of the Swedish province: stiff suspensions, a sharp steering wheel, low profile tires and a stabilization system work smoothly and clearly. Electronics, of course, you can turn off and try yourself in the "independent" control of rear-wheel projectile. But as soon as the computer considers your actions dangerous, the stabilization system will turn on itself.
Sometimes it seems that everything is possible on this machine. Press the gas, do not forget to move the short gear lever, enjoy the characteristic sound of a 230-horsepower rotary “beast”.
And about frightened … On the edge of a huge round tachometer, the window of an electronic speedometer was dulled. The numbers show … the proximity of the penalties. So I will not succumb to provocations - henceforth I will begin to glance there more often. And to whom am I explaining this?
SPIRIT OF CONTRADICTION
A small parking by the road is a good place to calm down and get to know the Mazda RX-8 in more detail. Do not become the cause of the accident: a rare driver will not slow down, looking at an unusual, little-known car even in Western Europe. And if you open all four doors … It seems that for modern bodies need new names. Or we agree with the Mazda - the coupe can be a four-door. Let's pay tribute to the designers: the body without the middle pillar (otherwise you can forget about the normal landing in the back seat) is sporty tough.
But do you know, provocateur dude, that sitting in your driver's seat, squeezing between the front desk and the high side of the chair, is not too convenient? But I don’t want to leave here. Even the wide tunnel between the seats does not press, but rather concentrates. This is not the place to relax. From the lever of the box, the hand should quickly return to the thick leather bagel. By the way, if you didn’t stint on the luxurious black and red trim, air conditioning, navigation, it would be nice to foresee the longitudinal adjustment of the steering wheel.
However, those who did not play basketball or rowing will be comfortable. It is tolerant in the back seat, although I don’t feel like driving far away. The door can only be opened after the front. And if you are forgotten from behind, then to get out of the compartment, you will need snake flexibility and gymnastic harmony.
Well, I can’t overcome the spirit of contradiction: you are sharp and swift. But do you want to live a calm, respectable life? You’ll probably find yourself not in your element?
Before my eyes is the familiar red hood and the characteristic "upturned" wings. And picking the engine on acceleration is already familiar, albeit quieter. Accustomed to the engine and clutch, you go quite calmly, without scaring away civilians. We leave on the highway, turn on the sixth at 90 km / h and smoothly dial the allowed 110.
You feel the smooth European joints no stronger than in another less "evil" and tough car, the noise does not bother at all. You can even accelerate without switching, however, at a civilized pace. And here is the local intruder! Something he is too rapidly approaching our stern. A short movement of the lever, gas … "Athlete" turns into a point in the rearview mirror.
I release the gas and watch as the speedometer needle returns to reasonable limits. Phew! Still, he couldn’t resist again …
FROM PRACTICE TO THEORY
One of the leaders of Mazda formulated the company's slogan: "Do not be afraid to stand out from others and do it with pleasure." The RX-8 coupe fits perfectly with the motto. However, “in everyday life” a car, if you get used to it, is quite flexible. Of course, it is difficult to imagine a squat graceful silhouette on broken asphalt or in a snowy yard. In Russia, where official deliveries will start from 2005, the Mazda RX-8 will probably be a summer car, and for some, a weekend car.
Anyone who sits behind the wheel of this unit on Saturday morning, most likely, will spend driving a car without a clutch pedal, or even in the back seat. Therefore, it is better not to forget that powerful brakes with ABS, a stabilization system, and refined handling characteristics will not replace qualifications and, most importantly, common sense. This "Mazda" is still a provocateur, although well-mannered and very charming.
FROM THREE WHEELS TO TWO SECTIONS
Toyo Kogyo, founded in Hiroshima in 1920, built the first vehicle in 1929. A simple tricycle called the Mazda Go (Go). The first Mazda 3 60 with a V2 engine was launched in 1960. And seven years later, the company began selling Mazda-Cosmo Sport with a two-section rotary engine, compact and light. The company considered that such a motor with all its advantages and disadvantages is good for a sports car. It has become a tradition. The next model was called the Mazda RX-2. So the current RX-8 is actually the eighth generation of cars with an Felix Wankel engine. The company confirmed the capabilities of rotary units in 1991 by winning the 24-hour race at Le Mans. Today, Mazda is the world's only manufacturer of serial vehicles with RPD.
This is truly a united Europe! In order to announce the opening of a representative office in Russia, the Mazda European branch invited journalists to Denmark, from where they moved to Sweden along the longest bridge in the Old World.
A bridge to Russia is also pointed. The opening Russian representative office has extensive plans: expanding the dealer and service networks, reducing the queues for Mazda-3 and 6, and delivering the RX-8 sports coupe. So far, the company has received a certificate for the import of 150 sports cars. Today, gray dealers sell cars for about 54 thousand dollars. The head of the mission, Jorgen Schrabber, hints that official cars will be cheaper.
The prototype was shown in September 2001 in Frankfurt. Production was mastered at the end of 2002, at the beginning of 2003, the production car was presented to the public.
