However, for offroad competitions the very thing. The peak of the thaw has passed, the cold nights have dried up the country roads, the forest has not yet lost its fiery autumn outfit, but it has already become quite bright. Yes, and when you still plenty to ride on the primers and off-road? In general, it was decided that we were going on an Off road adventure, an off-road adventure … An excellent test for Pajero, isn’t it? Yes, and for us the opportunity to face off with colleagues, maintain the status of "Behind the Wheel" …

There are five special stages ahead, five stages, five special contests for five teams of two cars each. We, taking into account the wishes, got a silver “Mitsubishi Pajero GDI 3.5 V6 Exclusive”. Xenon light, leather and wooden interior, electric seats, a huge sunroof, a complete set of electronics in the transmission, air conditioning and 18-inch wheels with asphalt tires “Pirelli-Scorpion Zero” with a 55 percent profile.

The Super Select transmission with an automatic transmission is not a new thing for Mitsubishi. Everything is possible with it: both an economical rear-wheel drive, and a full one with an interaxle differential - for stability, and "hard" - for off-road, and low gear. But interwheel locks are not provided - instead of them electronic assistants. The first - MASC (Mitsubishi Active Stability Control) is responsible for active safety. His task is to analyze the readings of the steering angle, steering wheels, vehicle speed and body position, to recognize the beginning of skidding and to extinguish it. The second - MATC (Active Traction Control) increases patency by braking the stalled wheels. Third - MEBAC (Engine Brake Assist Control) helps stabilize the machine on a slippery slope. It maintains a constant descent speed by controlling engine braking torque and wheel brakes.

On the sidelines we have a Mitsubishi L200 pickup truck (ЗР, 2004, No. 6).

The fees were debts, traffic jams on the outskirts of the city were boring, there was no lunch in the program. But the start time is recorded by check from the McDonald's. Our photographer dismissed the original plan with a glass of coffee with indignation: “We must have a bite to eat properly!” Thank you, Kostya, for your visionary appetite! Who could have thought that the promised surprise from the organizers is..? No, about everything in due time.

A long time ago, on the way from Trinity to Kirzhach, the monk Sergius decided to take a break and, as often happened with the monks, chose a good place at the source on the hillside. Over his long life, he has done many good deeds, for which he was canonized. And the source has since been regularly visited by pilgrims - they say bathing in it cures the disease.

Those who at a temperature slightly above zero will agree to stand under the ice stream, the organizers promised 500 points. We owe them to the navigator, however, his cough did not pass soon …

After the rain, it is hardly possible to drive to the source in an ordinary passenger car. To go down the clay ruts is still half the trouble, but to go back. … So the experience of driving with all-wheel drive was replenished with valuable skills in driving a car on highway rubber on slippery roads. On the Pajero in this mode, it is better not to block the center differential - the machine is easier to get out of track.

Even the slightest obstacle must be prepared in advance. Super-Select recommends rear-wheel drive for dry asphalt - with the transfer case control lever in position 2H, we stopped in front of a hollow soaked after recent rains. Now the lever in position 4LLc - and forward. Only at first there will be a 90 ° turn, and after a couple of meters the ill-fated ruts.

Oh, it was necessary to connect the entire all-wheel drive arsenal on the pavement! The assault attempt ended in failure - the Pajero was stuck tight, because on the roads he remained rear-wheel drive. The reason is simple - to connect the front-wheel drive and lock the center differential, you need to drive 5-10 meters in a straight line. At a bend, the electronics do not allow the drive to connect - the difference in wheel speed is too great. In general, it was not enough a bit: the front wheels picked up when the car was already up.

Realizing that the four-ton machine could not be pushed out (although it did not even lie on the bottom), they turned to colleagues for help. The elegant elastic cable could not stand the first jerk, the imported steel did, but the hooks were pretty straightened. In general, we learned a lesson - until the “correct” circuit is displayed on the dashboard, popping into the mud prematurely.

We won the competition for high-speed wheel replacement with a clear advantage. Of course, timekeeping is not “formulaic": more than two minutes to remove, enclose around the machine, put the wheel back. But after all, there are not one, but six nuts, and the tool is only manual, and the wheel of kilograms will pull by 30.

Wheel exercises finished dark. The next test required not only the ability to keep distance, but also ingenuity. Is it easy to drive a kilometer on two cars connected by a five-meter twine? On asphalt is not at all difficult. And on slippery ruts, where in other places you will pass only with acceleration? The main thing here is to correctly position the cars. The first is the L200 pickup with a manual gearbox, the Pajero - the second: with the “automatic” it is easier to adapt to the pace of movement. Constant tension of the "coupler" is supported by the photographer, he also broadcasts signals "closer-further."

As a result, only our team brought the rope not just whole, but clean! Transmission mode - 4HLc, top gear, locked differential. If you drive in a lower gearbox, you will sometimes have to switch to second gear, and it will be more difficult to maintain a constant distance.

At night, all cats are sulfur. However, in the light of the bi-xenon headlights of our Pajero, the road is visible very well.

It's time to play with the on-board computer: the average consumption of AI-95 gasoline is 17.2 l / 100 km. Theoretically, on the track you can keep within 12, but only with very uniform movement at a moderate pace.

The next stage is the passage for a while of a figured track at the bottom of the former quarry, and now the entertainment "Extreme Park" in Sorochany. We start the pair, finish on the second crew. Short straight, tight turns, slippery dirt - the main thing is to drive accurately and not rush. The transmission mode is 4H, the center differential is free - it’s easier to turn, but there are no deep “ambushes”. The automatic transmission is left in the D - engine allows you to dial in a straight line 70–80 km / h. The distance passed unmistakably.

And the total time is the last. The second car of our team, the Mitsubishi L200, was not up to the mark - with a rigidly connected front axle and a long base, it was not possible to get through the tight track with one approach. Another plus in the piggy bank "Super-Select." And another minus in relation to the suspension - the energy intensity, especially the front, leaves much to be desired. Even small transverse tracks cause a breakdown.

Is there hot water here? Not. But there is a Karcher high pressure washer. So, it is possible to wash the car to a more or less decent level. As fast as possible. Dirt that has dried up to the hood is difficult to clean; in one pass the strip is cleared no wider than the palm. Involuntarily I recall the old wisdom: if you want to find out how big your car is, wash it!

This is the final contest - the traditional “figure” on asphalt on a freshly washed machine. A bend, a snake, a dimensional corridor, a snake, a bend, a finish base, the start of a second car on the referee's signal. Simplicity and haste played an insidious role. Your humble servant mixed up the direction of the round of the first chip on the “return” snake, and when he heard the navigator’s critical comment, he was so upset that he forgot about the “finish base”. Claims to the car? To the grip on tires on the pavement - none. Of course, I would like a stiffer suspension and the steering wheel is “faster”, but not so bad either.

Competitions came to an end, time to announce the winners. The joint team “Driving” and “Soviet Sport”, it seems, will be left without prizes: out of five tasks, only two are won.

The final result … first place! An unexpected special contest helped. The organizers calculated the amount of the checks for that very lunch and … revealed the winner. Our team became him thanks to the so hungry photographer.

Is it really serious? Not a competition, but a pleasure walk! That's right - for this, modern SUVs do it. Such as the "Mitsubishi Pajero GDI 3.5 V6."

Or do you seriously believe that they are needed "for transporting people and goods along dirt roads to muddy waters"? Do not boil, we are already going to you!
