We are already accustomed to the fact that in the model range of Swedish cars “hot” versions prevail with low and high pressure turbines, which, as it were, shade the creators' harsh temper. And suddenly the news - no, the whole event: a newcomer with a V8 nameplate appeared in the range of Volvo engines. What is this tribute to the American market, still a priority for the Swedes? Trying to create your own, more voluminous and original? Indeed, the development of an all-terrain vehicle probably forced the creators of Volvo to reconsider their established positions.

We had to find answers to these and other questions during our acquaintance with the new flagship Volvo, the XC90 V8.

DEBUTS BEFORE WORLD PREMIERE

The Swedes acted in an original way: a European test drive was scheduled for February 2005, while Russian journalists traveled to Gothenburg in the fall of 2004. We were offered a novelty, which has yet to “shine” with the motor in the near future.

We are first! Although, to be precise, the first in Europe. A week earlier, the Americans got the same opportunity.

The fact that the creators are confident in themselves, the car and the engine is felt right away - no secrets or omissions. Yes, the new engine is not Volvo’s “native” product. Its prototype is produced by Yamaha, a 3.6-liter Ford Torus engine. For Volvo, the unit was radically redesigned. Its working volume was increased to 4.4 liters, so that from the old engine only the original layout of the cylinder block was preserved.

At Volvo, they are proud of the beautiful design of the “heart” of the XC90, they emphasize that this is the first gasoline V8 according to the most stringent environmental standards. It took tremendous work to remake the car. After all, it was necessary not only to maintain a traditionally high level of passive safety. A more powerful engine required to increase the strength of the transmission units, to pick up a new gearbox. But now the XC90 can boast of the most modern six-speed adaptive “automatic” manufactured by Aisin, again in Japan.

I had to make changes to the Haldex coupling operation algorithm. Unlike less energy-armed counterparts, here the electronics do not wait for the front wheels to slip to connect the rear. On the contrary, this car always “starts” in an all-wheel drive version and only then, if not necessary, at a speed of 10-15 km / h, the rear axle is automatically disabled.

So the Volvo XC90 V8 is not just a new engine. Before us is an updated car, to get acquainted with the character of which is already impatient …

LARGE SHIP

Apparently, the organizers were guided by this saying, sending us on a 400-kilometer route along the picturesque corners of their country. The test program was not only full of sights, but also gave a rich driving experience.

We were assured that no changes were made to the chassis settings, and the new 18-inch wheels and cosmetic refinement of the exterior were unlikely to significantly affect the behavior of the car. Well, perhaps … Of course, the new engine paired with an adaptive "automatic" can not but remind of itself from the first minutes of communication! At first, they seem to get used to your driving style. But soon everything falls into place: the motor rumbles, then roars, delighting with its excellent dynamics, and the box echoes him fast and at the same time comfortable switching.

Of the unusual - a large stroke of the accelerator pedal. It seems that she has already rested, it remains only to push the kick-down. But no, the gas sinks deeper and deeper, until somewhere, in the very depths of the floor, it finally stumbles upon a stopper.

Having fashionable six steps, the “automatic” began to switch more often, looking for the optimum. He does this gently and quickly, but sometimes excessively pedantically, managing to sort out two or three gears on a bend arc drawn as in a circular. Of course, the driver’s right foot is also “guilty” of this, but, I remember, the four-speed gearbox “pulled” the transmission much longer.

But no matter how ideally the interaction of the mechanisms was debugged, the character of the engine can truly be felt only in the manual control mode of the gearbox. Everything is honest here - a forced transmission is retained until the limiter is activated.

Suddenly it turns out that the V8 loves revolutions, becoming the most cheerful after 3–3.5 thousand. Before that, he demonstrates a moderate temperament and calm responses. But then real anger and aggression appear in his roar, jerkingly placing the tachometer needle in the red zone. For a large motor a little unusual, but it starts. Avtomat easily smooths out such nuances of character, allowing you to “shoot” at any speed with cannon acceleration.

At this early presentation we were asked more than once: “Well, how is the car?” After all, even with the prices here, they have not yet decided on the price. It is only known that the BMW X5 is adopted for the upper reference level.

So, if the part of the engine and transmission answered quickly - they say, great, then the chassis settings have become a topic of discussion. For example, I would like a more interesting handling (say, like the same "X-fifth") - at least with such suspension settings. Or, conversely, better comfort while maintaining some straightforwardness in fast turns. After all, the competitors in the Volvo XC90 V8 are very serious. They are armed not only with fast engines, but also with those same “highlights”, which were mentioned a little higher.

The lateral arrangement made extremely high demands on the compactness of the engine. The mass of the V-shaped 315-strong “eight” is 190 kg, length - 754 mm, width - 635 mm. This is one of the best indicators for motors of this volume and power.

The left cylinder block is offset relative to the right by half a cylinder, the camber angle is only 60 °. The vibrations inherent in this configuration are defeated thanks to the balancing shaft. The camshafts commanding the exhaust valves drive additional chains - there is no need for large sprockets. The starter is built into the cylinder block and does not “steal” a place under the hood.
