The machine, developed in 1995, was supposed to supplement the production program of the plant “from below” - in a niche of equipment with a loading capacity of 800–1000 kg. Then things did not go further than the pilot party.
The main result of this work was the birth of the concept of a transformable universal platform. It included a welded spar frame, a four-wheel drive transmission with permanent drive, an interaxle lock differential, a transfer case with a reduction gear, strong axles on the forged longitudinal arms, a spring suspension, a compact hub unit with a disk brake and a constant velocity joint, and a rear brake unified with “Sable”. Later, a compact transfer case with a planetary gearbox and a multi-row silent Morse chain was added here.
On this platform, it is quite easy to vary the layout and technical parameters of the car. At GAZ, such an interesting project was implemented in 2000. Then, in just five months, they developed and manufactured a prototype of the Combat jeep. At MIMS-2000, he enjoyed continued success with visitors.
In the same year, a major reorganization began at GAZ OJSC. Alas, a number of areas, including those related to the Ataman theme, have been curtailed. But soon the project was again in demand.

The 2004 Combat of the year 2004 looks like the still popular GAZ-69 Gazik. The most stylistically close version is with an open two-door body and a removable awning. In addition to it, there is an option with a hard plastic top and an all-metal three-door body.

But unlike the glorious ancestor, the Combat is a very modern fast and comfortable car. Judge for yourself: a spacious convertible five-seater interior, a cozy and elegant interior, an energy-intensive chassis on a powerful frame - the key to strength and durability of the machine. Long-travel wheel suspensions coupled with permanent all-wheel drive give confidence on the roads, and power steering and powerful braking mechanisms guarantee high active safety.

The engine family has not yet been formed, but, in addition to gasoline and diesel "fours", the installation of more powerful five- and six-cylinder engines is provided. The transfer case combined with the gearbox has a reduction gear, an interaxle differential and a device for its blocking. Thanks to the already mentioned drive chain, the complex multi-shaft unit on the go is less noisy and almost does not vibrate.
