The first, about 10 years ago, was the export “Samara”, then the “tenth” family, then the “Niva” … Now, finally, modern class engines are also equipped with modern engines that comply with Euro II standards. The modernized VAZ 2104 engine has a distributed injection, a gas vapor recovery system and a neutralizer.

Along with them, carburetor "Lada" is still being produced. The market, both new cars and the secondary one, will persist in offering cars with different fuel supply systems for more than a year. And buyers, therefore, wonder - what to take?

TWICE SEVEN

Today, 1.5 liter injection engines are installed on the Seven (VAZ 2107–20 model). An alternative - VAZ 21074 with a 1.6 carburetor engine - about 5 thousand rubles cheaper. Agree, at current prices - for the "seventy-fourth" they ask for almost 140 thousand - the difference between carburetor and injection modifications is small. And yet - is it worth it to overpay?

The first thing the buyer will do is compare the power of the motors. The VAZ 2104 engine is smaller in volume and “stifled by ecology”, according to the factory data, is weaker, and the declared acceleration to 100 km / h at the injection machine is worse by a second. It seems that the arguments are not in favor of injection. However, our measurements showed the opposite - VAZ 2107–20 outstripped the opponent in almost all dynamic indicators (see table), showing both better acceleration and a larger maximum speed.

The concept of “run-in” is true for all new cars, but it is considered good form when the car from the first kilometers produces characteristics close to the declared. Alas, this rule does not apply to our models - “Lada”, “Volga”, IZhs are completely “rolled out” after 5 - 10 thousand km. Two "sevens" that came to us for a test are another confirmation of this. For example, VAZ 21074 on the "maximum speed" did not reach 11 km / h. Cars are very "tight", roll poorly, which is confirmed by the measurement of coasting.

FEEL THE DIFFERENCE

The injection smoothed out the character of the Lada. With such an engine, there is less chance of stalling - the car travels more confidently from low revs. On the VAZ 2107–20, it is easier to pass an exam for “rights”, and in the future, an inexperienced driver will less often have to listen to insulting remarks and beeps during a long start from a traffic light.

We change to a carburetor car - that’s a small failure when starting off. You can deal with it, playing clutch and gas, but, frankly, you do it without much enthusiasm. Perhaps having conjured over a carburetor, it will be possible to achieve a better ride. Question - for how long? In addition, pretty train cars are tormented by another disease - backlash in the throttle drive. Choosing them, the driver has to work gas jewelry. Owners of injection "Lada" will not face this problem - cunning joints are replaced by a cable.

To start the engine, the owner of the VAZ 2107–20 only needs to turn the key. No need to play the choke control knob - the electronic control system will set and keep the minimum steady revolutions. Almost immediately you can go without fear of dips and jerks inherent in the carburetor.

The injection eliminated another problem of the Lada. A common cause of intermittent start-ups and poor dynamics is an incorrect clearance in the breaker contacts. Experienced 10-15 minutes are enough to fix the problem, and beginners … will have to look for experienced. The microprocessor-based ignition system, which is paired with an injection, does not require maintenance - just remember to change candles and wires in time. In addition, you do not need to constantly twist the carburetor adjusting screws for the sake of ecology and fuel economy. Still, the great thing is electronics.

Since we are talking about maintenance, it is worth mentioning the frequency of filter replacement. Compared with the carburetor modification, they have to be changed three times less on the injection engine, although they cost almost as much more. True, most dealers evaluate the service of carburetor and injection engines equally. By the way, the fuel fine filter is located under the hood, and not under the bottom - it is more convenient to change it than on front-wheel drive VAZ models with the letter “I” at the stern.

One of the strongest arguments against injection is a malfunction in the engine control system. It is unlikely that it will be possible to catch it without a diagnostic device and an experienced master. True, even in small cities, repairmen are no longer afraid of cunning electronics - the benefit of “Samara” and “tens” with injection have been coming off the assembly line for more than a year. In addition, according to unofficial statistics, problems with carburetors and contact ignition torment owners more often than sensors and actuators of electronic systems.

A SPOON OF TAR

… more precisely, ladle. It is surprising that on an injection engine that satisfies Euro II, there is no feedback on detonation - on the cylinder block, which the updated unit inherited, there is no tide under the corresponding sensor.

Unification is not only beneficial. Another confirmation - on the injection engine, a more powerful generator leads a conventional V-belt. The load on it has grown; accordingly, it will be necessary to tighten it more often than on a carburetor machine, as well as change it. It is noteworthy that on the "Samaras" with the injection set the same V-ribbed belt. What is not an example to follow ?!

The radiator and expansion tank on the VAZ 2107–20 remained in the same places. But the connecting hose had to be laid differently - an air filter stood in its way. A small change was not in vain - on our machine the hose was pinched. We are afraid that the owners of other VAZ 2107–20 will see the same factory oversight.

All these are constructive flaws, which, if desired, can be shortly and inexpensively fixed. Unfortunately, the claims do not end there. The eternal misfortune of Russian cars is low quality. At the injection point, the rear axle sang dejectedly from the first kilometers, and when shifting gears in the transmission, frightening knocks are heard. As soon as we left the gate, the “Chess engine” light came on - the mass air flow sensor failed. I had to go back to the dealer to fix the problem.

The steering mechanisms of both cars have a noticeable backlash. The brakes are unstable - it seems that air is walking in the system. Bench measurements on the drums confirmed the fears: the injection “seven” showed decent results only the second time, while the carburettor rear wheels were blocked earlier than the front ones, threatening to skid under heavy braking. However, we are used to the fact that new domestic cars often have malfunctions already in the first kilometers. It is comforting that the majority of factory defects will be repaired by the dealer under warranty.

If you do not take into account the quality, but evaluate the advantages and disadvantages of the structures, then the injection VAZ 2107–20 has more advantages and it is worth paying for them. The new engine made the "classics" friendlier not only to the environment, but also to the driver.

By the way, the gas pedal platform fell off at the end of the carburetor car. And how to regard it - a mere coincidence or another argument in favor of injection?

The most expensive Togliatti sedan of the classic VAZ 2107 layout with a 1.5 liter engine was released in 1982. Engines with a volume of 1.3 liters (model 21072) and 1.6 liters (21074) were also installed on the Seven. Later, for export to Europe, VAZ 21073 cars were produced in small batches, under the hoods of which were 1.7-liter engines with single injection. For countries with left-hand traffic, the VAZ 21076 with a “right” steering wheel was intended. Today on the market there are two modifications of the "seven" - with a 1.5-liter injection engine and a 1.6-liter carburetor, which we took for the test.

SUMMARY

VAZ 21074 has been kept on the conveyor for more than 20 years, and it is unlikely that such longevity is due to the advantages of the design. Is it time to retire ?!

VAZ 2107–20 - the new engine gives the Zhiguli a second life. It would be nice not so long as with carburetor cars.
