The new Octavia has been awaited for a long time. Its predecessor allowed Skoda to take its rightful place in the hierarchy of European brands, but it was in 1996.

Then "Octavia" was the first car built on the platform of the Volkswagen Golf IV, and appeared before it for a whole year. But in 2003, the premieres of the second Audi A3 and the fifth Golf took place, and the new Octavia, which shares the chassis and some power units with the Germans, had to wait a few more months.

It is easiest to recognize the new Octavia from the front, although here too, perhaps, there is too much in common with its predecessor: a characteristic decorative radiator grille, protruding stamping in the center of the hood, bumper line. The shape of the headlights, which received “crystal” optics, became more bold, more convenient than the opening of the rear door, the hood and front pillars changed.

The main drawback of the previous model, especially when you consider the image of the "family" car, consider the cramped rear seat. A passenger above average height rested his head on the ceiling, and with a rather big driver, also with his knees in his seat. The increased wheelbase and new seats with thinner backs made it possible to accomplish the previously unthinkable: two 190 cm tall can, albeit without extra freedom, fit one after another.

Suddenly pleased with the bumpers - Skoda designers, apparently not without pressure from buyers, returned to the individual lower parts of black plastic.

Probably, even in prosperous Europe, where the height of the borders is less than anti-tank escars, there were many who were not satisfied who had to fork out for an expensive bumper after a careless parking. Gum on the contour of the bumper is also real, removable. A commendable example - even on the expensive Audi A3, fake plastic stamps take their place.

“Skoda Octavia” is now presented with five types of engines: three gasoline and two turbodiesels. The most modest 1.4-liter gasoline engine is familiar with many Volkswagen models. But in the 1.6-liter volume there are two units at once: 75 kW / 102 l, known from the previous Octavia. with. with two valves per cylinder and the new FSI direct injection 85 kW / 115 l. with.

Skoda marketers say that today more than 60% of cars sold are equipped with diesel engines, and their share is constantly growing. In this regard, it will hardly be a surprise that the most powerful Octavia is diesel. Two engines with direct injection are equipped with turbocharging and pump nozzles. Smaller, with a volume of 1.9 liters, with two valves per cylinder; two-liter 140-horsepower - with four. In general, a decent set for the debut.

The author managed to get acquainted only with diesel engines and the most powerful gasoline … although who knows, maybe they will be the most popular on our roads?

July Czech Republic did not meet us with summer weather. Low cloud cover, incessant rain and narrow mountain roads in the vicinity of Liberec, in the very north of the country, near the border with Germany and Poland.

The car of the "first test" - with the FSI engine and in the Elegance configuration. The steering wheel with buttons of the audio system is sheathed in leather, a huge color display in the center of the dashboard is given to the navigation system, climate control - with separate regulation. But the seats are ordinary, mechanical, and an attempt to move over (the car was on the rise) led to an unexpected measurement of the driver's seat. The chair quickly left to the stop, so with the growth of 176 cm I reached the pedals with only my toes on my boots, and “two fists” remained above my head. Mentally add 15 cm to the legs and torso - even a driver two meters tall will not touch the ceiling with his head. The number and range of seat and steering wheel adjustments are optimal; you don’t have to look for your landing for a long time. Even the fashionable armrest between the seats does not interfere with shifting gears.

The engine pulls well already at 1, 500 rpm and noticeably revives after three and a half thousand. At the same time, despite the compliance with the environmental standards of Euro IV, it quickly responds to the gas pedal and does not cause inconvenience when starting. Only at idle does the engine produce a characteristic clatter of nozzles. There is nothing to be done - the high pressure of the injection system generates such a feature. With intense acceleration, the sound of the engine seems unnecessarily stiff, reminiscent of racing engines, but at the same time the overall noise level is quite comfortable. And yet, the dynamics of “Octavia” did not cause a flurry of emotions. But the press release claims that fuel consumption with the FSI engine is lower by an average of 10%.

Shod with 225/45 ZR17 Bridgestone Potenza low-profile tires, the Octavia does not show a “family” level of lateral acceleration. True, it didn’t get to the slides - the Skoda two and a half-wide track, replete with closed corners and oncoming cars, didn’t really have it. Even on wet surfaces, powerful tires prevent the drive wheels from slipping under traction. As for the operation of the brakes - the deceleration for wet surfaces is impressive, ABS works almost imperceptibly when it seems that the wheels are already slipping. It's hard to find fault, even if you want.

WHITE AND RED

Outside, two diesel "Octavia" differ only in the color of the letter "I" - one has white, the other has red. In fact, the differences are much more noticeable. The car with a white “I” is equipped with an eight-valve engine and a five-speed gearbox. Only two or three years ago, one could talk about its characteristics only in superlatives, but modern diesel engines are progressing so fast that leaders change almost once every six months. "White" TDI pulls well above 1500 rpm, starts off well, accelerates well, if …

If you do not know about the car with a red letter. After him, I do not want to return to the 105-strong Octavia. And the point is not in the extra 35 “horses”.

The two-liter 16-valve diesel is much wider in range, easier to spin and vibrates much less. Of course, he, too, “withers” below 1, 500 rpm, but behind this mark he demonstrates impressive torque, easily turning the front wheels even in second gear.

A six-speed gearbox allows you to use all the capabilities of the engine in any speed range. On a suburban highway, you often do not have to turn to it - above 80 km / h you can safely go to the sixth and allow yourself fast overtaking. In the city, one has to use a pretty good lever: at low speeds the car “does not drive”, above 3000 it becomes too sensitive to the slightest movement with the gas pedal, causing passengers to strain.

So the automatic transmission will be a great pair for any of the turbodiesels. While it is available only with a weaker motor. And what a transmission! The same DSG, with two clutches, the acquaintance of which first happened at Audi TT (ZR, 2004, No. 8). It seems that here it will be no worse.

What should be the perfect Octavia? Discussing this issue with colleagues, we put together what we liked the most. This is a powerful diesel engine plus a DSG automatic transmission, combining the smooth operation of the “machine” and the efficiency of the “mechanics”. Among the bodies, preference was given to the wagon, the debut of which is only expected. As for the all-wheel drive, opinions were divided in half. Equipment? This is a matter of taste and finance.
