EXPERTISE: FOG LIGHTS

FOGY OUTLOOK

ALEXANDER BUDKIN

Whatever you say, we have a strange attitude to automotive lighting. Everyone understands what a huge role she plays in traffic safety, and yet the majority does not give a damn about her choice. Ask any motorist how much a headlight bulb costs - he will certainly tell you the price of cheap junk, which even a bicycle cannot be installed.

And the sellers in our car dealerships? These lovely people give out for dignity the ability of rootless headlights to simultaneously perform the functions of foglights and high beams! Imagine manicure scissors that can bite nails at the same time …

Can't imagine? So we, buying nine samples of fog lights, did not assume that there would be so many station wagons and the results of their tests would be so depressing.

MULTIPLAYERS

Products purchased by us as “extra lights” shocked specialists. Instead of the traditionally mean emotions of the lines of the official protocol “… does not meet the requirements …” in the report we read: “… this device has nothing to do with the fog lamp …” or even better: “… resembles the light distribution of a flashlight …”! In general, to say that the experts were extremely indignant - to say nothing.

The fog lamp is designed to illuminate the road with a very wide, but small in height beam. In order not to blind the driver, this light fixture is strictly limited by the maximum illumination: a little less is not scary, a little more is the guard.

A completely different thing is the high beam headlamp. They do not require specific light distribution from it, but they strictly regulate the minimum luminous flux. More is possible, less is not.

Now try to understand the experts. Products that are designed to satisfy completely mutually exclusive requirements - shine weakly and strongly at the same time - fall into their hands. Of course, on all (or almost all) miracle headlights there are homologation signs, and sellers releasing a byak have some kind of certificates.

It is impossible to measure the parameters of such headlights due to the lack of light distribution, or rather, at least some border on it. After all, it is at the border of the light beam that a headlight is installed on the stand. So in relation to the six outsiders of our test, we had to be content with only text comments. Just don’t think that we were specially looking for rubbish to surprise someone - it’s just now that it’s much easier to buy than a high-quality headlight. And now, in fact, about the last …

WHITE RAVEN

Three of the nine headlamps we purchased in stores turned out to be really foggy: two domestic ones for the Volga and the VAZ’s “tens”, as well as the eminent Hella. Unlike six dual-use freaks, these, when installed on a test bench, showed a clear cut-off line, so that we have a quantitative assessment of their work.

In numbers, our three heroes showed good results. All met the requirements of the standard, and Hella made it clear that it was able to illuminate the road a little better than Russian colleagues. She issued the maximum allowable suites in the area where it is required to shine moderately well (see figures) and did not exceed the permissible blindness.

Domestic products also succeeded, although experts noted that these are not the best products of our factories. But which ones - we can only speak with a degree of probability.

According to the long-established bad tradition, “our” products do not pack, so you have to focus only on the marking known to specialists. Embossed on the case "20.3743" - should be the headlight for the "top ten" produced by Avtosvet OJSC. And if there is a corresponding emblem on the diffuser - this is Osvar for the Volga. That's just on our headlight for GAS marking on the glass was not. What is it - a fake or a factory product that went on sale in a roundabout way?

It is ridiculous to think that unpacked headlights, and even more so unmarked ones, should not be sold by a store. But against the backdrop of six dual-purpose trinkets, domestic foglights, albeit unmarked, are perceived as a gift of fate. You can, of course, go on with the principle and declare Hell the sole winner. Well, they say, someone has the right light, and the markings are all right. Moreover, the corporate kit includes so many wires, cogs, terminal blocks that when you open the package, you rejoice like a child who was presented with an expensive designer. But a look at the price tag is like a tub of spring water. Corporate kit more expensive than a pair of domestic headlights about five times.

And yet, regardless of your financial capabilities, we strongly advise: do not buy the rubbish that stupid sellers will offer you as "additional dual-purpose headlights." They poorly illuminate the road, but they blind well in the fog of the driver himself. Riding with them is no less dangerous than on the sidelights. The true purpose of this junk is to be thrown into the nearest garbage can!

HOLD WORD

In the examination of air filters published in ZR, 2004, No. 6, we promised to present our products with our own “Zarulevsky” requirements. We are doing this again here - besides the clauses of the European Rules adopted as an official standard, including in Russia, we indicate the characteristics that the Za Rulem magazine would like to see.

What are our criteria for setting the bar? As a rule, we rely on the opinions of specialists and take into account the real capabilities of manufacturers. We know that not only eminent companies, but also our factories can do better, and we demand this. And how many headlights, arbitrarily bought in Moscow stores, will cope with the difficult task - one or all - the question is not for us. We hope that someday there will be many of them.
