Racing races, and probably any fan of traveling on real off-road wants to make his Niva even more reliable and passable. The experience of athletes is very welcome here.

TRACTION BALANCE

It is easiest to increase a car’s cross-country ability by improving its geometric parameters: ground clearance, front and rear overhangs, radii of longitudinal and transverse cross-country ability. At first glance, simple - put huge wheels and at once solved all the problems. But then it turns out that the car became sluggish and can’t overcome the long-familiar steep hill without acceleration. The reason - decreased traction on wheels. Now you have to increase the gear ratio of the transmission or the maximum engine torque. Or maybe both.

Oddly enough, it's easier to work with the engine. Forcing the "Zhiguli" engines has long ceased to be the secret of the elite and got rid of the raid of shamanism. The most effective way is to replace the standard camshaft with another one, with wider valve timing. For the characteristic profile of the cams, they are called humpbacked. For off-road, lower shafts are chosen, not only increasing torque, but also shifting it to the low-speed zone. The recognized leader in the production of miracle rolls is the Ufa firm Master Motor.

The most common engines and therefore homologated to rally raids in the national class are the VAZ engines 1600, 1700 and 1800 smz. The latter is the most powerful; for fishing and hunting, it simply has no equal. In addition, these motors are affordable and easy to repair, not like a sawn-bored 1.9-liter with 86 stroke and 84 mm pistons. A good resource is valued no less - with a weak motor in a race, seconds are lost, and with a breakdown - hours …

Further engine refinement is related to the nature of the track. If the swamp is completely, you have to put a snorkel - a pipe that supplies air to the engine from the roof level. And even if the water is just waist-high, they must seal the ignition system, and toggle the switches of the electric radiators for the cooling radiator onto the instrument panel. They put a pair to cover the entire area of the radiator and not to boil the engine.

The next step to improve cooling is the VAZ 2121 six-blade impeller water pump. Standard radiators serve quite normally, others are not needed by hunter-fishers, but riders prefer copper Orenburg ones with a large volume and heat dissipation.

Most of all, when preparing the Niva for racing, it gets the transmission.

Self-locking differentials are usually mounted in the rear axle gearbox - there are three types of them. The cheapest - $ 300 - disk, but it works hard.

Average in terms of characteristics, quality and price - $ 400 - screw type “quaif”. It allows fine tuning of the lock moment. The best, but also expensive - cam-disk. Its price is 500 dollars. They don’t put a limited-slip differential in the front axle gearbox - they have to travel not only through swamps, but also along asphalt. Although, they say, in Germany they make a “differential” with forced locking: it wouldn’t hurt, but the pleasure of rowing with all four wheels will cost $ 800, which is not pleasant for everyone.

Note that when installing a limited-slip differential, bearings and gear engagement must be re-adjusted. Work requires experience and equipment, therefore they usually turn to specialists, and they also suggest putting in addition to the large wheels of the main gear gear with i = 5.0 for only $ 190-200 plus work. But there are two gearboxes, and the price of alteration doubles. Moreover, it is not known in advance how the homemade product will work. There is a cheaper way and with an easily predictable result. Recall that gearboxes are interchangeable with the “classic”, and it has a pair of 4.3 (VAZ 2101) and even 4.44 (VAZ 2102) - the most suitable for the modernization of the Niva.

But this is not the limit. Four-speed gearboxes VAZ 2101 and VAZ 2103 will give another 4-5 “ten”. The next stage is the struggle for the survivability of the transmission. The sore spot of the Niva is the SHRUS covers, so instead of the rubber ones they put more durable ones from the Duiton Heitrel thermoelastomer. Instead of the native elastic coupling of the intermediate shaft, they are adapted similar from BMW or Mercedes. Simpler - put a washer with a diameter slightly larger than a coupling with three ellipse holes. When the rubber breaks, the bolts cling to the washer, and even with a knock and vibration, but you can get to the finish line.

Front-wheel drives, whether imported or domestic, break in the same way during extreme driving, but only VAZ axles set the axles - others do not withstand the loads. Sometimes, instead of the standard crankcase, the front axle gearbox is cut from the rear beam. They attach it not to the engine block, but to the front axle beam and stabilizer, this will not burst.

A GROWTH HORMONE

Brakes, as a rule, are native, but now no one goes without a power steering. The main manufacturer is ZF or domestic “Steering systems”. The side rods are redone in the drive - they put two short tips and, in order not to bend, an adjusting clutch machined from the hexagon.

With the suspension conjure no less than with the transmission. “Volgovskie” springs - they are cheaper than tuning springs, but they go no worse. Shock absorbers - whoever the hell are they, ball bearings - respect the “Track Champion”, and put special bushings on the axis of the lower levers so as not to bend.

Serious alterations are needed when installing wheels with an outer diameter greater than 31 inches. Then they manage to weld the second front spars to the main ones, with them the clearance increases by another 70 mm. Under the upper ball bearings they put thick (25 mm) steel spacers on strong bolts. The rear beam is reinforced from above with a channel.

Of the tires, they prefer Michelin-XZL with a dimension of 31''x7.5x16 ($ 140-150 apiece), but there are cheaper ones, domestic ones - the Yaroslavl Bear and Omsk OI-504 in size 235 / 75R15 for 1300 rubles each. Wheels - both steel and alloy, who can afford it - the main thing is not to disrupt departure, otherwise the bearings will not last long.

Under large wheels, wings and arches are cut out, rubber or plastic expanders are placed. For competitions, a tubular safety cage is required, most often they find a place in the cabin, sometimes they are mounted outside.

The seats on sports cars from Sparko or Recaro will be used by relatives as well for hunters, but if the athletes remove the rear to save weight and transport spare parts, then the hunters are hoping for a large trophy. The main thing is to shoot successfully!
