WINTER TIRES 175 / 65R14

Last winter season was marked by the appearance on a wide sale of two new products of Russian-foreign production. Almost imperceptibly, without catchy advertising slogans, the Goodyear and Nokian companies came to our plants, setting up production of winter (and not only) tires in Yaroslavl and Kirov. And although both tires do not carry well-known trademarks on the sidewalls, except for the inscription “designed by …”, the technology for their production is strictly controlled by the representations, and they are sold mainly through a company distribution network.

An interesting approach to the lineup. If Goodyear adapted (at least externally) its well-deserved Ultra Grip 400 model to the Russian market, calling it Medeo, then in Kirov, together with the Finns, they created a new tire with the harsh name Nord Men, according to the tread pattern it is very reminiscent of Nokian Hak-kapeliitta 2. One way or another, but both international tires received not only "foreign" names, but also grew in price compared to Russian ones. And if so, then we selected the most diverse competitors, this time even having made an advantage in the direction of imported products. As the bus carrier used VAZ 2114, which in anticipation of the tuning program needed a run-in and arrangement of the workplace. Based on the fact that the Volga Automobile Plant has finally decided on the tire dimensions for the entire front-wheel drive family, officially allowing the installation of 14-inch tires on the Samara, we selected winter tires suitable for the entire front-wheel drive family: so, 175 / 65R14 and only in studded option. The latter is due to the fact that the main manufacturers of winter tires both here and abroad unanimously argue that tires that are structurally designed for studding (and most of them in the markets of the Nordic countries) show their best performance just with spikes.

The fact that the Ultra-Gripp 500 makes the most serious demand for leadership, we realized, barely starting a series of measurements. The tire, like nuts, snapped any version of the proposed program, demonstrating unattainable results for the rest. And no matter what cover was under the wheels, snow or ice - each new measurement turned out to be a reference. Nevertheless, they found fault with something. As it turned out, this tire is not friendly with loose snow porridge formed on poorly cleared roads. Having fallen into such a mess at high speed, the “fourteenth” suddenly turned into a poorly controlled projectile, scouring from the curb to the curb. The reason for the waywardness, apparently, is in too good (!) Coupling properties: the tire clings to the slightest ledge of the surface, which in loose snow leads to undesirable, and most importantly, difficult to predict trajectory deviations. But even with such shortcomings, Goodyear is beyond competition.

A longtime rival of our champion this time was a little more modest. So, on the pavement, the car showed a large vibration load, and comfort was noticeably reduced. And although he retained and even increased the accuracy and intelligibility of the responses, the “fourteenth” became definitely rougher in its reactions, and it carried this severity through all kinds of tests.

Where "Nokian" were in their element, so it is on the snowy tracks. The minimum of “nervousness” in loose snow, smooth breakdowns in sliding and, accordingly, the ease and consistency of their correction made it possible to control the machine quite reliably even at a very high (120–130 km / h) speed. Alas, the emerging rivalry did not work out. Finnish tires have yielded to the leader in braking properties (both on ice and on snow). At first, we didn’t even believe it, but repeated repetitions convinced: “Nokian” behave rudely and in a critical situation they lack the accuracy of the responses, a kind of rail inherent in “Goodyear”. Yes, and on a special, closed track to assess handling, there are more slippage in the front axle, a deeper and sharper skid. All this, of course, worsened the results.

3. "MEDEO"

Soft and comfortable, they aroused interest even when running. It seemed rather sharp, the car suddenly became envelopingly calm, and as if from the road all minor bumps disappeared. Of course, on the pavement, the reaction of the car was guarded by lethargy, not even by the “eight” responses, there were delays in steering actions, but in general, the VAZ 2114 retained the logical relationship and did not become insidious for the driver. These tires require increased attention on mixed surfaces. If one side gets into the snow, left, for example, by cleaning equipment, the car immediately smoothly, but aggressively starts to drag towards the loose coating, and it will be rather reluctant to get out of there.

But where Medeo was completely rehabilitated and, frankly, pleasantly surprised, it’s on slippery surfaces. Excellent results in handling and braking, excellent cross-country ability - here even the eminent Nokian had to be content with the worst numbers. And although the Medeo special snow and ice track, in comparison with the leaders, lacks control accuracy and reaction speed a little, the tire compensates for this by its excellent coupling properties and very logical behavior.

In a word, if it were not for the reader’s complaints about the lame quality of the Yaroslavl "Goodyear", it’s just right to talk about the bestseller of the domestic market.

Outwardly nothing outstanding, without the now trendy tread pattern, these tires suddenly confidently made their way into the top five. Already on the asphalt, the car captivates with its elastic, assembled, almost summer reactions, logical behavior in acute situations. The payment for this is the hard rolling of tires on small bumps.

But on the snow, "Yokohama" is somewhat lacking tenacity. Here, the front axle slides are predominant, active tightening towards a looser coating, requiring driver intervention. But the most interesting was the behavior of our "fourteenth" on ice. “Yokohama” suddenly went so cool that it began to step on the heels of the leaders, but as soon as it hit the snow, the demolition of the front axle again began to prevail. As a result - only the fifth time on a closed highway.

Strong, good-looking, pleasing with soft rolling along irregularities and very logical, if not correct reactions on asphalt. Under these conditions, the car is felt to the subtleties, and even its slightest disobedience is immediately transmitted to the driver, and he manages to take countermeasures.

In the snow, all the dependencies remain, but the Hankuku lacks a little margin of coupling properties. It turns out that it happens like this - the car seems to be doing everything right, but the slip occurs quite early and does not allow to achieve an outstanding result. A manageability assessment only confirms this. On the ice, in terms of control accuracy, the hankuki are almost inferior to the leaders, but they lose to them, quickly breaking into a slip. In the snow, the car too actively seeks to “fall out” of the turn, demanding the use of special control techniques with its rough responses.

First impressions are rather optimistic. The Fourteenth is stable and reliable on dry and wet asphalt; True, she does not indulge in comfort, toughly responding to any minor unevenness.

However, in the snow you quickly encounter yawing the car from side to side and, alas, too frank slippage of the front axle on the bends. The tire noticeably lacks tenacity. Because of this, you work a lot with the gas pedal and steering wheel in search of the right control algorithm, both on snow and on ice. It turns out more or less stably, but slowly, which makes Kleber uninteresting for an active driver.

Even on asphalt, the tire is somehow not impressive. Wadded responses, laziness at the entrance to the turn and even hard rolling on bumps. The fact that we have a middle peasant who does not shine with a persistent character is evident in his own element. Early slippage, an increased tendency to demolish the front axle in the snow, and a sharp drift with a large delay, do not allow precise control of the machine in acute situations. On ice, its behavior softens a little, becoming more predictable, but all the same, the annoyance of the slides and the delay in correcting them interfere with the control.

8. “BARUM”

Honestly, they expected more from the Polaris: apparently, the sonorous name that was conducive to winter riding affected …

Indeed, at first the tires seemed very even in quality and somehow comfortable. To the best of tough and vibro-loaded, they demonstrate quite peaceful behavior on the asphalt, straining only with excessive singing at high speed. However, when winter truly takes over, Barum becomes homely: it has nothing to stand out among its competitors. The driver is again faced with too early and too rectilinear glide, forcing first to "push" the car into a turn, and then still fight with a sharp and deep drift.

The Barum behaved in a peculiar manner on the ice. Our VAZ 2114 suddenly drove very well along a closed highway, competing even with Yokohama, but completely refused to stop, demanding a large braking distance. Than spoiled the final place of the Czech tire.

9. I-620

The only purely Russian participant in the contest, whom the Yaroslavl people were not afraid to include in such a famous company.

By nature, the tire turned out to be quite controversial. Rigid and vibro-loaded, at the same time on the pavement it does not affect the integrity of the car's responses - rather, it puzzles with a kind of thoughtfulness. But in the snow it annoys with the sharpness of breakdowns that develop very quickly, with alternating either the demolition of the front axle or the drift of the rear. Often in one corner several times you have to return the car to a given trajectory - it reacts so nervously to driving and gas. At the same time, “ceremonial” figures, such as braking, are quite good, and on the ice “crowded foreigners” do. Of course, the point here is in more spikes biting into the ice much more confidently. One way or another, I-620 did not show the main thing - the general integrity of the plan, fully inherent in, for example, Medeo.

10. "NORD MEN"

The Finnish guy of Vyatka origin at first pleases with clear and logical behavior. At least on the asphalt, the Fourteenth rides almost like a Nokian. However, with the advent of snow, this similarity is melting before our eyes. All that remains is the sharpness of the responses, not supported by the proper coupling properties in either the longitudinal or transverse directions. As a result, the behavior of Kirov tires is very reminiscent of the “Yaroslavl”, with the only difference being that the “Nord Men” have a worse braking effect on ice. Here, it seems, we need to seriously work on the composition of the tread mixture, the secrets of which probably experts from the country of Suomi possess.

11. SAVA

Noisy, tough and rather vibration-loaded, these tires at the same time do not please with the activity of responses on the asphalt and very early begin to glide on ice and snow. Loss of adhesion occurs sharply - you have to pretty much work as a steering wheel before the car "changes its mind" and returns to the intended trajectory. In fact, these tires do not like winter at all and are more like universal ones. This is due to their complete failure in our trials.

Goodyear is beyond competition, primarily in winter qualities. This tire is good on asphalt and at the same time admires the ability to withstand slippery surfaces. The only drawback is the “nervous” behavior in loose snow, at least in relation to the domestic VAZ 2114.

“Nokian” is expensive, but rude, especially in comparison with the leader. It is characterized by precise reactions, very reliable behavior on poorly cleared winter roads, but the payment for this is high vibration load on small irregularities. Slightly let us down and braking properties. In a word, modernization is needed.

Medeo. According to ideology, the exact opposite of Nokian. Soft and lazy on the pavement, they just bite into the snow and ice, striking excellent results. Like the leader, these tires do not like loose coatings, too sensitive to the quality of cleaning the roadway.

Yokohama Fighting properties are slightly lower than the first three. But as compensation they demonstrate very confident behavior on asphalt and ice. But in the snow they lack traction and intelligence behavior.

Hankuk. Their hobby is a balance of riding properties. On these tires, the car is not only comfortable, it performs all the driver’s commands very correctly. Unfortunately, to break into the leaders, you need the best grip.

“Kleber”, “Firestone”, “Barum”. Three confident middle peasants, in places very similar in character. They seem to be trying their best, but due to mediocre grip properties they remain “just tires”, albeit winter ones. They definitely lack their own self. Hence the modesty of the results and frank mistakes in some nominations.

I-620. To achieve the level of middle peasants "Yaroslavl" prevents some inconsistency of character. She would have a little less sharpness in behavior and more logic in the snow. She copes with the rest.

"Nord Men." Tires are comfortable and logical on the asphalt: regardless of its condition, here they provide a lively and quick response to the car. However, this is not enough for winter, you still need to be friends with snow and ice. So far, the “Kirovchanka” is not very successful because of the low coupling capabilities.

"Sava." First of all, I want to pick out the spikes and not fool people. Although then the tires will remain very mediocre. Something went wrong in technology, hence the very low grip on winter coatings.
