When it comes to rivalry among the most prestigious brands, Mercedes and BMW are more than often compared. In fact, they have a lot in common. From the addiction to the classic layout to the formal correspondence of classes and models. If you focus on catalogs and technical specifications, coincidences just get into your eyes. Is everything so obvious?

Take, for example, two compartments. Mercedes-Benz CLK and BMW 3 Series. Both are created on the "compact" platform of their concern - Mercedes-Benz CLK uses the chassis of the latest C-class model, BMW, as expected, the third series. The coupe from the Mercedes resembles a sedan only in front, and in profile the difference is more than noticeable. Although many are sincerely mistaken, considering the BMW coupe a two-door sedan. In fact, he, like the Mercedes, does not have a single body part in common with the sedan. The compartment is lower, with a longer hood and shorter roof and trunk. Even the headlights are different - just the general style and strict adherence to the traditions of the brand makes different cars too similar.

APPROACH TO MOTORS

Is the coupe a sports car or just an individual one? The approach may be different. Everything is decided by the engine and suspension. With sufficient power and the appropriate character of the chassis, “sportiness” is only a matter of appropriate attributes, such as deep seats, a small chubby steering wheel and aluminum pedals. Do not agree? Let's discuss. Moreover, cars with clearly different engines in terms of capabilities were assembled for the test. Under the hood of the Mercedes, a modest “four” with a volume of only 1.8 liters with a 120 kW / 163 liter drive supercharger. sec., and BMW has a serious three-liter “six” - 170 kW / 231 liters. with. So we had to refuse direct comparison of dynamics.

By the way, Mercedes offers in Russia almost the entire range of engines for its coupe; BMW is limited only to the most powerful gasoline “sixes”. However, the most “charged” BMW M3 can be considered as the final link in the compartment chain. Draw conclusions - if “weak” motors are not represented on the market, then the emphasis is not on quantity, but on image.

About the suspension is worth mentioning especially. If the BMW 330Ci does not stand out in anything special - an ordinary low-set European car, then the Mercedes-Benz CLK frankly surprises not at all with a western ground clearance. We did not fail to measure and compare. Under the BMW it turned out 110 mm, and under the Mercedes - 175 mm! "Lada" rest - the "German" clearance more. The reason for this dramatic difference is simple - the Mercedes is equipped with an adapted suspension, while the BMW coupe does not. Only sedans of the third series are raised above the road. How did this affect the behavior of the machines? A little later…

TWO BY TWO IS FOUR?

Two doors - two places, the rear does not count. But these coupes are created on the basis of full-fledged sedans and are not shortened. Means?.. Means, even passengers up to 185 cm tall are perfectly seated in the rear. It’s more convenient to get into a Mercedes, and the rear passengers’s knees are more spacious, in BMW there is a bit more space above your head and wider in your shoulders. But the layout of the driver’s seat is very different. In the Mercedes, the driver’s seat cushion can almost lie on the floor, so that despite the sunroof stealing a lot of space above your head, a giant two meters tall can easily fit here. The BMW is noticeably cramped and those who are above 190 cm will have to support the ceiling or order a car without a sunroof.

It is easy to see that Mercedes prefers people above average height. The author, the owner of a modest 176 cm and size 42 boots, even the pedal assembly was too big. And the experiment with a miniature lady in shoes of size 35 even went on the verge of a foul - in order not to tear off the heel, she had to press the brake pedal with her fingers! It is known that the Daimler-Chrysler leadership has an average growth of 190, but it is probably worth looking at other requirements. The traditional multi-function lever to the left of the steering wheel will refrain from scoring - it is the same on all Mercedes cars and getting used to it is a matter of time.

BMW has a more balanced adjustment range. Perhaps the only gripe is that the steering wheel rim and the lower spoke are too thin for the sake of designer imagination, where the finger strives to get into. No, let them choose something less responsible for art experiments, for example, windows buttons.

It is worth paying attention to the big difference in body structure. The Mercedes-Benz CLK Coupé does not have a middle pillar, so it can be called a “hardtop”; accordingly, the rear window is retracted inside the sidewall of the body. BMW only externally tries to convince of its "airiness": here a full-fledged middle pillar is hidden by tinted glass. It has an electric drive that raises the rear edge for better ventilation of the cabin - an indispensable service to the smokers who are now oppressed.

Even with a heavier BMW engine, it is 80 kg lighter, and the mass of the car is almost evenly divided in half between the front and rear wheels. The Mercedes has 120 kg more front wheels, even with a lightweight four-cylinder engine.

HELLO TO ROAD WORKERS

It's no secret that the suspension of many modern cars on our roads do not behave in the best way. The answer is known: you can combine manageability and comfort only by sacrificing energy intensity. But what is permissible on the German autobahn, it doesn’t work for us - the suspension, which works “from lock to lock”, does not serve for a long time. In our case, the contrast was striking.

BMW acceptable to cope with bumps and waves, but its suspension on the upper limit of stiffness for road vehicles. At high speeds and rough roads, they have a hard time, although even in these conditions the energy intensity, albeit end-to-end, is enough. But the car’s reactions can be easily entered into the register of standards - BMW practically doesn’t heel, goes into a turn perfectly, writes an arc excellently 20-30 km / h faster than “shot” more modest cars. The electronics controlling the slipping of the driving wheels insure against gross errors of the driver; minor flaws are easily corrected by the steering wheel. But, despite the apparent ease and "playfulness", BMW is not for those who rely only on the instinct of self-preservation. With the electronics turned off, the three-liter engine easily breaks off the widest (205 mm) wheels into a slip even on dry asphalt: the driver must keep the situation under control. And the speeds are not at all childish … From our point of view, the BMW steering wheel, which makes 2.8 turns from lock to lock, is still not sharp enough, but we rely on conclusions drawn at 150–160 km / h, but on the historical homeland of the car is not uncommon and riding in the third "hundred"!

The Mercedes is shod in low-profile tires of different widths: 225 mm in front and 245 mm in the rear. The body raised by the adapted suspension on impressive 17-inch wheels looks, to put it mildly, strange. However, in life such a tailcoat with sneakers turned out to be very pleasant. The suspension perfectly swallows any reasonable irregularities, and impressive moves easily cope with the waves of coverage. Perhaps only the tires too loudly express their dissatisfaction with the dear. As a result, even at maximum speed, the Mercedes gives the driver a feeling of excellent comfort and some relaxation. But the combination of wide and tenacious tires with a not too powerful engine and chassis, when setting it up, obviously thought more about safety than about ostentatious "lightness", is the best insurance against rash actions of the driver.

Driving impressions of both cars differ diametrically. BMW captivates with responsiveness and lightness, “Mercedes” - with phenomenal stability and comfort. Despite the fact that the speeds in the same corners are very close, subjectively BMW seems faster.

And the meaning?

What is the use of the coupe? Yes, they are more graceful than the sedans that got their teeth on edge, but for this they will have to pay a considerable “bonus” - at least 12 thousand euros for a Mercedes and 4 thousand for BMWs. However, in practicality, they lose little - the back seats are full, there are no four problems with a ride, and the folding backrest of the rear seat will help transport skiing, snowboarding, and even a bicycle. Yes, and in the standard version, both luggage racks are not small, but the lead here is for Mercedes. At BMW, the already smaller compartment is pretty squeezed from above by a Haman Kardon subwoofer.

COMPARED…

The choice between these cars is simple, and it does not need columns of numbers and expert opinions. For him, the price tags and lists of additional equipment are not even very important. Believe me: heating, electric drives, leather, xenon headlights and a luxurious audio system - this is not a question. At least for the Mercedes, where the basic price includes only the basic components of comfort. BMW in Russia professes the now fashionable All inclusive approach - you want to take it, you want to not, you still paid for it. Just “wholesale options" is cheaper.

“Mercedes” is first of all comfort and solidity, designed for already elderly people. Those who have occupied a large position in a successful company or own a solid business, but at the same time have no idea about Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, smartphones, PDAs and other wonders of modern electronics. BMW seems to be aimed at a young, but no less wealthy person who prefers to be active in everything from business to leisure. The choice between a Mercedes and a BMW is a matter of religion, not logic. You surely know which is better - the organ or iconostasis?
