Niva was born for two elements - asphalt and off-road. Although an elongated pickup truck, it seemed to us more fitting for a rural resident. After all, an open cargo platform does not need a city dweller. You will not leave anything of value - they will soprut. But you need to constantly clean the dirt, snow and cigarette butts. The last 30 thousand km "Niva" spent mainly in long-distance, providing technical support to the "Zarulevsky" motor rallies. And let not be a techie not the most honorable occupation, but the most responsible. A reliable rear is the basis of any operation.

TECHNOLOGY

The car was appropriately equipped. In order to better protect the property, the body was covered with an elegant plastic cap of a well-known Togliatti company. The former, dermatine, was completely worn out. At first I liked the novelty - lightweight, quick-detachable, lockable. But not even a year had passed before the plastic twisted and cracked. Now the roof does not fit well, puffs and flows along the middle longitudinal seam.

The miserable front seats were replaced by Japanese ones, from a retired car. It would be foolish to praise them for the lack of a beating on the coccyx seatpost or adjustable lumbar cushion. This all goes without saying. We will only say that sitting has become much more convenient.

Changed and floor insulation. He, mineral wool, always remained wet and beckoned the carrion, but when they inadvertently spilled milk on him, he simply could not breathe. Instead, they put sheets of polyethylene foam - a building heat insulator. The choice was very successful - the new material does not get wet and dampens the noise perfectly.

For the test, we purchased a power steering LLC “Steering systems” (see ЗР, 2002, No. 6). Installation kits have recently appeared on the market. Liked! And the matter is not just in lesser efforts: a new sensation has arisen - of power over the road. So nice that in anticipation of the trip sucks in the stomach.

As it should be technically, "Niva" got a winch. We chose the AR-9000 of the St. Petersburg company Avtors, and the brackets for it were installed on the front bumper and in the back. "Kengurin" and quick-detachable fasteners are also St. Petersburg, from "Soyuz-96". Agree that such a push-push is much better than a simple "narrowly" winch.

ECH, ROADS

The longest turned out to be a throw to the North. Then, in one sitting, Niva overcame more than six and a half thousand kilometers. There were trips and shorter - two to three thousand. And in none of them did not have to regret that they were driving a pickup truck. A long base gives stability, and the car holds the road well not only on dry pavement, but also in bad weather. The long-stroke soft suspension makes the long journey not tiring at all. Off-road abilities appear on broken “highways” - where we will drive, and where we will jump over. The cabin is warm and comfortable. It is relatively small and therefore quickly warms up. Even in the Arctic when the frost was -43 ° C, the process took about twenty minutes. Maybe that's why the "twenty-ninth" is not uncommon there.

Only high fuel consumption upsets: no matter how hard you try, you'll get a dozen liters. And a little drowned - get all fourteen. A staff tank with such an appetite is small, in the outback from refueling to refueling you can not hold out everywhere. So you have to spend part of the carrying capacity on gas cans.

Summing up the wanderings, we came to the surprising conclusion: “Niva” is a very reliable car. No unexpected breakdown happened to her. And every time they managed to reach their destination on their own. And at home we can fix anything! Here, as you know, walls help.

OLDNESS IS NOT JOY

Naturally, to sixty thousand the car was pretty worn out. So, fingers pounded in the jet rods of the rear axle. The reason is the completely worn-out rubber bands of silent blocks. At the same time, their outer clips, those welded to the bar, are wiped. If the wear is large, the necessary interference after replacing the bushings will not work. Such a node is not a tenant. We went through more than one old traction, while we found fit for repair.

Then came another, more disturbing sound. It turns out that the gaps in the spline joints of the cardan shafts have increased. Parts will have to be replaced - shock loads can destroy mating elements.

Apparently, the gearbox finally fell apart. It has been repaired several times, put new gears, bearings and shafts. Alas, spare parts purchased at the bazaars turned out to be completely substandard. Desperate, they raided the bins of familiar motorists. As a result, it was possible to assemble a fully functional unit from the cobbled but suitable parts. But a year later the “fourth” started to pop up again.

"On cold" began to whistle a fan belt. The replacement did not help - the pulleys of the crankshaft and generator were developed. Clearly, new purchases cannot be avoided. While we muffle the sound with a drop of engine oil, applying it once a week to the working edge of the belt.

There were some traditional problems in the power system: the car is either traveling or twitching. Sinned on a carburetor - disassembled and cleaned several times. All in vain. The reason was in the tank. Having removed the fuel receiver, they found that something similar to a clot of peeled paint stuck to the grid. Several of the same pieces swam nearby. What they could - they caught it. They defended themselves from the rest, putting on another one, where a large mesh of bulk knitting, on the fence. It turned out well. But there were no other problems yet.

The winch can be installed in front … and at the back.
