ECONOMIC AND GLUTY

AND WAS A DEEP ECONOMY

MIKHAIL GZOVSKY

Which of us does not like to ride with the breeze? For the sake of this pleasure, we, pressing the pedal to the floor, sometimes forget about the inevitable spending on fuel. However, the owner of an average car can reassure himself that a sports car, overtaking him "as a standing", a full tank of a subcompact is hardly enough for a hundred kilometers …

ENJOY YOUR MEAL

The statement “the larger the car, the more gluttonous” is generally true. The Caterpillar-797 mining dump truck eagerly devours up to … 783 liters of diesel per hundred kilometers! True, given the volume and power of the engine (117 liters and 2535 kW / 3447 hp), as well as the load, the appetite of the American Gulliver can be considered moderate. Colossal fuel consumption is more than paid for by a mountain of ore transported in one go.

Trunk trucks are no match for career brothers. A hard worker winding dozens, or even hundreds of thousands of kilometers per year, must be economical so as not to ruin the owner. Therefore, a modern tractor at the head of a loaded 40-ton road train is not so gluttonous. For example, the Swedish Volvo-FH12 with a 12-liter engine, whose torque reaches 2000 N.m, is content with 36 l / 100 km. To achieve this result, cars are literally stuffed with electronics that control the operation of the engine and transmission. Yes, and the aerodynamics of the trucks are given hardly less time and energy than passenger cars.

The special character of expensive sports cars. For a few moments of "flight" on the autobahn and a spectacular start from a traffic light will have to pay at a gas station. In the "afterburner" modes, the 6-liter 575-horsepower engine "Lamborghini Diablo GT" drinks in terms of a hundred more than 50 liters of gasoline. With a quiet ride will be able to keep “only” 38 l / 100 km - a kind of reason for pride! The Diablo was replaced by the Murcelago model. According to the manufacturer, it is more economical - it consumes 15-30 liters of gasoline per hundred. But the temperamental drivers, on whom the car is designed, will surely easily overcome the upper figure.

Not only athletes can boast of indefatigable appetite, but also executive sedans and luxurious coupes. In the list of the most uneconomical among the most imposing - Rolls-Royce Cornish, recently discontinued. "Inflated" to a volume of 6.8 liters, the "eight", spread out under the hood, they say, fascinates with a characteristic sound. But not only this - with indicators of power and maximum speed (242 kW / 329 hp and 225 km / h) that are modest enough for such a volume, for every 100 km traveled in the city, the Cornish drinks up to 27.5 liters. By the way, a relative of Rolls is the Bentley Arnage sedan, which is even more gluttonous: in a metropolis it can require up to 30.7 (!) L / 100 km.

Mercedes-Benz S with 6 and 5 liter engines and the Audi A8-Quattro of the previous generation with a 6-liter W12 engine are not far behind the British. Neither high technology and modern materials, nor meticulous assembly can abolish the laws of physics. With a flow rate of 25 liters of high-octane gasoline per 100 km, you will have to come to terms, as with inevitability.

DIETING

For more than a quarter of a century, competitions have been held annually, according to the results of which they select the most economical car in the world. However, streamlined plastic “capsules” are hardly pulled by a full-fledged car: the average speed is only 20–25 km / h. Tiny engines with a capacity of several “ponies” with a capacity of several “cubes” are configured for this mode (they often even use engines from aircraft models!), And they are turned off endlessly to save drops of gasoline. In order to reduce the already ridiculous mass of the car, during the competition, the pilot's place, as a rule, is occupied by adolescents.

But the game is worth the candle: the record, owned by the French team Mikrodzhuli, seems unrealistic. In June 2001, at the Rockingham Speedway in the UK, we managed to get 1 liter of fuel … 3620 km! In units more understandable to motorists, the consumption amounted to 0.02762 l / 100 km of track. Of course, this is a fantastic indicator, absolutely unattainable in real life. But outside the gates of the training grounds and test tracks, the progress of recent years is also very noticeable.

The main breakthrough was made thanks to cars with hybrid power plants that combine an electric motor and a traditional internal combustion engine. For example, the Honda Civic Hybrid is satisfied with 3.45 liters of fuel per 100 km, and the needs of the second-generation Toyota Prius that debuted recently are even more modest.

While hybrids are gaining momentum, diesel compacts hold the palm. "Audi A2" with a capacity of 45 kW / 61 l. with. contented with an average of 2.9 liters, and the next edition of the Guinness Book of Records "Volkswagen-Lupo TDI" blocked this achievement. In a record run of 6, 450 km, a car equipped with a 1.2-liter three-cylinder engine consumed an average of 1 liter of diesel per 50 km. A similar result at one time was shown by Toyota Yaris with a 1.4-liter diesel engine, which allowed an average of 44 km to pass per liter. Calculate how many thousand kilometers the Yaris would wind if it ate from the tanks of the Caterpillar … 6800 l.

Trucks with gasoline engines are still popular in the United States. Fords of the Super Duty series of the F450 and F550 models consume about 25 liters of fuel per 100 km.

By appetite, the devilishly gluttonous “Diablo” has few equal even among sports cars.
