ON THE AMUR ROUTE

IGOR MORGARETTO

Russia is still unique: nine time zones, from the capital to the western point 2 thousand km, and to the eastern (land) - as much as 10 thousand km! And life in different parts of the country is noticeably different, and we can’t even talk about automobiles. The western part is full of second-hand foreign cars of European companies, domestic cars reign supreme in the center, and right-hand drive “Japanese” rule the ball in the east. In Primorsky Krai alone, such 76% of the entire park!

Russian automobile “spheres” rarely intersect: in the central regions they know little about “Japanese women”, and in the Far East they have never heard of new Russian cars. One of the main reasons for this is that our great country still does not have a highway connecting the center with the eastern regions.

Now, changes await us, the possible scale of which in the near future is even hard to imagine. ZR journalists will be the first to drive along the newly constructed sections of the Amur highway six months before its official commissioning. And Rosavtodor, the state road service of the Ministry of Transport of Russia, will help us with this.

HISTORY WITH GEOGRAPHY

The construction of the Amur highway in a certain sense can be called the construction of the century - it began more than 40 years ago (!). For many reasons, by 2001, out of 2, 265 km, only 994 could be laid. In 2000, President Putin visited Blagoveshchensk and instructed the government to speed up work. Of the 550 km that was to be completed, today the gap of 350 km between Chita and Khabarovsk remains incomplete.

Officially, the road will be commissioned in the spring of 2004. So far, in gravel construction, and the entire track will gain a hard surface in only five years. But today it is operating: 500-600 cars pass through it per day. The unfinished section has to go around on local roads and temporary crossings, which greatly lengthens and complicates the path. We expect to go the entire Amur highway. In any case, the leaders of Rosavtodor promise this to us.

A lot has been said about the role that the new highway will play for the country. It will connect the most important regions of Siberia, the Far East and China, and will enable the inclusion of the eastern part of Russia in the system of world transport communications. This, bearing in mind its global mission. Well, local changes have already announced themselves. Even where traffic has not yet been started, where road workers work, farms appear, catering, trade enterprises appear, gas stations function … And when will the highway work at full capacity and 3-4 thousand cars will go on it per day?

WHO WILL GO TO THE EAST?

Of those 500-600 cars that pass today on the unfinished highway, 80-90% are right-hand drive Japanese cars and off-road vehicles. They are driven from the ports of the Far East to different regions of Russia. Residents of Primorye are sure that there can be nothing better in terms of price and quality. If they know about the existence of new cars manufactured in Russia, then only by hearsay they have not seen in their eyes. So we want, having traveled from Moscow to Vladivostok and Nakhodka, to present to the residents of Siberia and the Far East the latest products of the new automobile industry growing in Russia. New foreign cars assembled in our cities will go to the race.

The Chevrolet Niva from Tolyatti, the Ford Focus from the Leningrad Region, the Hyundai Accent from Taganrog, the Renault Symbol from Moscow, the KIA Rio and the KIA-K2700 (technical support truck) from Kaliningrad will depart from Moscow-Vladivostok. They have to travel almost 9000 km from the capital to Vladivostok, of which about a thousand will be on dirt roads. Agree: a difficult test, especially for purely urban cars (we will have three of them - "Accent", "Rio" and "Symbol"). In large cities, meetings are being prepared with readers of the magazine, motorists, where they can get to know the “new Russian” cars better.

Our official partner is Rosgosstrakh OJSC, a nationwide company with a branch network in all 89 regions of Russia. The co-organizer of the run, Rosavtodor, creatively approached the route planning, calculated where it is best to show the Far East our new equipment, communicate, see interesting, unique. At the end of 2000, we embarked on an expedition. Then the path lay from south to north, along the Urals, from Orenburg to the village of Kharyaginsky beyond the Arctic Circle. The expedition was named "Eurasian Way 2000". Well, it’s quite logical to consider the new rally a continuation and call it “Eurasian Way 2003”.

There is not much left before the start - in August we will head east!
