What do you think, dear reader, why do plants all over the world produce pre-production cars? It is right to bring to mind what happens when a plan is embodied in metal. And guess why experienced cars are not allowed on free sale? Well, of course: there is no reason to present your mistakes to the consumer. And now it’s a very difficult question: is there a country in the world where factories sell automobiles from a pilot batch to a consumer, and when they start making serial ones, they forget to correct their mistakes?

US WITH YOU ON THE WAY

- Thank you, good. I went on a weekend hunt.

This begins with Chevrolet (as I call it) a labor week. Colleagues regularly inquire about the well-being of the editorial curiosity. We have been testing each other since January, covering about 3.5 thousand km per month. On weekends, we often wander to the country house in the Tver region, making our way where no one, except us, has been traveling since November. In the trunk we carry a shovel, snow chains, sometimes a gas generator. In general, we live the full life of nature lovers. True, calling it an idyll would be an exaggeration. Young in every way, the car is ready to throw up problems - small and not very, but more on that later.

In general, the car is very nice. Spacious, warm, holds the road well, doesn’t "goat" on the waves, copes with slalom exercises. ZF hydraulic booster works perfectly according to domestic standards: without backlashes, with good feedback.

Designers and testers (both VAZ and GM) have worked with the suspension for so long that they have probably achieved optimal settings - the Niva knows how to drive on asphalt and doesn’t pass on potholes. True, in winter it is very sensitive to the choice of tires. A light car in wide bast shoes is not averse to flirting with a driver on a snowy road. And if you put on too toothy shoes, you run the risk of running into pretty sharp breakdowns (we'll talk about tires in detail another time).

FIRST Pancake, SECOND RAKE

Prudently taken canister "Tosola" emptied halfway, while he went … to register with the traffic police and back (about 10 km). Then, for the first time, I slammed the right front door with my heart - the lock lock button failed inside! The car started with varying success - after a while the bulb of the immobilizer turned on, which did not recognize the key (the immobilizer sensor at Niva is mounted in the key). On the way home (still from the traffic police) the left wiper blade froze - but the right one continued to work!

“Tosol”, as usual, left under loose clamps - on the main outlet pipe of the expansion tank and the lower hose of the “Tosol” supply to the radiator. I’m climbing into a notebook … Bah, the same two clamps were not tightened on an experimental machine received from a VAZ almost two years ago! Ah yes the stability of the results. Or do you think a coincidence?

On the expansion tank - perhaps, but on the radiator - hardly. This collar is so inconvenient that it can be reached only from below, having unscrewed two protections (!) - the main, powerful and additional, from noise and dirt. But even when you get it, you can tighten the clamp only with a small key and only with very flexible hands. Obviously, the desire to engage in such balancing act did not arise either during the assembly of the machine, or during pre-sale preparation. It's a pity.

There was no immobilizer, all the more so “cool” on the previous “Niva”, however, they sorted it out quickly (as it seemed then). The device “did not study at school” and does not know how fast the current should flow through the wires, so it asks for a couple of seconds to think. If you put the key in the lock and immediately twist the starter - you will fail. But if you insert the key, turn it into the “ignition” position, count in your mind “one, two, three” and only then turn it on - the engine starts almost always. Why again, "almost"? Patience, my friends, we will tell about this.

Why did the janitor stop? Firstly, they tightened the nut badly on a leash. And secondly … This trouble wasn’t just “on” in the prototype machine - it is and probably will be. Unscrews the driver's leash once every six months. Either the slots here are very bad, or the thread is wrong, or both.

About a week after the traffic police went without problems, when suddenly … However, the word "suddenly" is inappropriate here: more precisely, "finally" the generator belt whistled. A magazine a year and a half ago wrote that in order to drive a kilowatt generator, the belt must be put in poly-ribbed, and not the ancient "Zhiguli" one. In Togliatti, the leading designer showed us a car with a V-ribbed belt. So it should have been otherwise in the series. But alas! Either GM experts doubted the relevance of the decision, or, in our opinion, did not have time for anything. Imagine showing in Frankfurt or Geneva the new "Opel" or SAAB. And under the hood, a belt from the "Record": we didn’t have time!

He pulled the strap up and decided to himself: if any trifle happens now, I’ll go for a guarantee. Stop doing it yourself.

GM-AVTOVAZ GUARANTEES

There you have it, the G-Emo service. People are well-mannered, polite. Before starting the car in the repair area, they washed it for free.

- What do you have?

- Here, the belt whistled, the button failed, the speaker does not work.

“Have you changed the belt yet?”

Here are those on! It turns out that servicemen know about problems with the belt. Change to everyone! But, of course, not on the poly-wedge, but on the usual, only branded.

After inspecting the car, experts issued a verdict: replacing the belt, pump pulley and … the pump itself! And this with a mileage of 1570 km! By the way, if GM experts still don’t know, we inform you that the pump rarely cares for more than 30-40 thousand km on VAZ cars of the last years of production (the experienced Niva started flowing for the 32nd thousand). But it is, for reference.

Of course, there were no spare parts for our beauty on the company “GM-em” service. But, unlike the VAZ guarantee, Chevrolet and I were not put on the waiting list for two months in advance. We just went to the store and bought everything we needed. And we didn’t go, but the workers of the service station! Without taking a dime extra, we installed a Hepu pump, a Gates Auto Master belt, and poured coolant prepared from Texaco concentrate. True, it was striking that the antifreeze concentrate was diluted with tap water. However, some concentrates allow this, although not to say that they love.

Somewhat longer than you might have expected, they fiddled with the button that had disappeared. She, along with the thrust, fell out of the plastic piston. Of course, no such caps were found in the store, so the guys had to “squat” for a long time around the ill-fated door with pliers. It seems to work out.

But they quickly sorted out the speaker: the terminal simply flew here. Electricians expressed doubts about the quality of the audio preparation made at the VAZ: they put the chips very bad - they won’t hold such; we changed them, if something happens, come again.

After about three hours, we were free. The work was done quickly and conscientiously - if only the “Soviet” stations would work like that.

The next day, the driver of the Niva praised his colleagues for a guarantee: it’s great that he will go there after that (after 2 thousand km).

FIRST THAT: 4 HOURS AND 200 BUCKS

Do not make yourself an idol. The next time, “Niva” and I were in another shift. The car was just as quickly washed and started inside, but then forced to wait about an hour and a half. Chevrolet and I reassured each other: they say the owners of the nearby "blazers" will pay more, so they are more important. Alas, we did not guess about “pay less” for Niva.

When hands reached us, the soul became easier. People worked just as carefully, wiping every drop of oil with a fresh cloth. True, the request to pour “good oil” caused a slight confusion on the face of the master: what? Norcy did not offer, LUKOIL uttered with a shadow of doubt (do not forget, the service is “cool”), and when it came to Esso and Shell, it became completely sad. In the list recommended by VAZ, these oils were listed with a viscosity of 10W40. For colds minus 30 ° and below, which then caught on the capital, this was clearly not suitable. After conferring, they decided: if AvtoVAZ, in principle, trusts Shell oils, you can take "almost the same thing, only better." So I managed to ask for a synthetic Helix Ultra.

At the station, we spent more than four hours (along with washing). Too much for the first MOT, especially since the valves on the Chevrolet Niva do not need to be regulated - hydraulic compensators are here. We were satisfied with the quality of work, but at the price … Change the oil in the Niva engine … oh, sorry, the Chevrolet Niva cost 650 rubles (for the “drain-pour” work), in the transmission (box, “Razdatka”, bridges, lubrication of crosspieces) - 1300. For the motor oil itself, for example, they took 1980 rubles (4 liters, but they gave the “litrushka” with them to top up - apparently, this is supposed to be). In a store, 4 liters would have cost 1, 100 rubles, and the fifth I would not have bought at all.

In general, more than 200 bucks came up (see table). Of course, you have to pay for high-quality work, but today there are about a dozen foreign cars sold in Russia whose first maintenance is carried out not after 2000, but after 15 000 km and costs not $ 200, but $ 110–120. And for servicing the closest competitor, KIA Sporting, they are asking for about $ 150. In addition, for most foreign cars the price of service is the same throughout Russia, while for Chevrolet Niva within Moscow it differs by one and a half times. Not solid …

EQUATORIAL RUSSIA

Many VAZ cars with fuel injection systems do not start at low temperatures. Only, ts-ss, this is a great secret. From whom? Yes, at least from the GM. Yes, yes, the instructions for the car, at the very beginning it says that the Chevrolet Niva can be used at ambient temperatures from minus 40 to plus 45 ° C. a little further, after twenty pages, it is said that if you can’t start the car in the cold, then, firstly, it’s colder overboard minus 27 °, and secondly, you have bad gasoline poured. And what, let me ask: if the car does not start at minus 24 ° - then, in the tank of diesel fuel?

… January morning was going to work. Outside the window minus 24, the oil is good, the battery is new. And for a year and a half on the experimental Niva there were no problems with the launch: on it already went to Kotlas to freeze pants.

Striking the key … FIG. I pause, try again and again. He doesn’t want: the engine already gives out flashes at the first revs, but it cannot catch. Help pulls up; we catch "crocodiles". It spins superbly, like in summer, flashes go in all cylinders, but never merge into a rumble. Helping the weakest, all the neighbors wound up: old carburetor "fields", decrepit "Muscovites", injection "Volga". Only my Chevrolet and another 16-valve Ten were left helpless in the face of their native climate. Of course, because of gasoline. Oh, hiccuped to someone in Togliatti.

Do not think, dear reader, that I lowered my hands. The whole next week, while there were severe frosts, he tried to come up with at least something. He made the car work on bypass programs, removing chips from the sensors, pouring boiling water on the collector, burning candles, feeding the engine special air for cold starting. Once outside the city, I even tried to make bonfires under the car. In the end, the intellect won: learned to start the car with … electrical resistance with a capacity of 20 kOhm. How?

Pretty quickly I realized that the reason, most likely, was not a lack of fuel (or ether, or something else), but an excess of it. The motor gives outbreaks at the first stage of start-up - unphased; upon reaching a certain speed, it tries to switch to phased, but in small automobile brains something “does not grow together” - and the car stalls.

I tried to remove the chip from the liquid temperature sensor (near the thermostat) and attached the same resistance of 20 kOhm to it: the sensor should have so much at about minus 14 ° C. The control program at the same time, regardless of the strength of the frost, pours as much as it should pour at minus 14 ° C. Nobody floods anyone and - right, the car starts! At least up to minus 28 ° С. By the way, if anyone thinks that the poor VAZ has nowhere to simulate a cold start: the climate chamber in Togliatti is the same as there are probably no more than a dozen in the whole world. But it is, for reference.

And now - attention, the most interesting! When he hinted at THAT that the car did not start in the cold, the master assured that he had not heard of such problems so far. Fortunately, another Chevrolet Niva owner who came to change the belt under warranty was nearby. The question “start up or not” seemed to offend him: “Of course not!” Maybe GM really doesn’t know anything yet? *

I can’t help but say a few words about the adaptability of Niva to temperature extremes. Great test happiness fell upon me. The air temperature sensor built into the Niva once showed minus 36 ° С (and the happiness is that in such a severe frost it was not necessary to turn off the engine for a long time before the thaw?). So, some plastic parts of the machine are not designed for a cold - they crack.

As promised, something about the immobilizer. Sometimes, say, stopping at a gas station, the car flatly refuses to start until you pause for a longer time (5-10 minutes) or after you grind the key in the lock for a couple of minutes without trying to start it. This happens more often in cold weather, when the “stove” is turned on at high power - as if something in the brain is overheating and wants to cool. When I deal with a defect, I’ll definitely tell you.

OH YES IN A DREAM HAPPENED

The laws of the genre require a transition from criticism to a happy ending. To tell you the truth, it’s a shame to myself that I have to tell so many nasty things about a good car in general. By God, he deserves a better life. Everyone who had the opportunity to “grab” on the “new Niva” experienced feelings of satisfaction to delight. I don’t remember anyone who would say “I don’t want” about Niva if it was well assembled and reliable enough.

No matter how much the car suffers from childhood diseases, they are quickly forgotten (especially when you are not repairing at your own expense). Despite a long story about the problems, I’m not afraid with Chevrolet to get to where there is nobody else besides us, even when weather forecasters promise minus 30. And in general, I love him. And if you talked with someone for so long, would you not love?

Complaints about the interior: the cup holder rests on the lever, "bites" the driver's belt at the top point, the exterior mirrors are no longer adjusted (we think until the summer).
