The poor fellow may forget that the wheels to be purchased should have the same offset as the one on his car, the landing diameter and the diameter of the mounting bolts. And which disc to take: steel or alloy, cast or forged, aluminum or magnesium - is unclear. Well, let's figure it out together.

How steel was replaced

Of course, the steel disk is very good: strong, reliable and, moreover, inexpensive. It holds the blow well: it does not crack at all, but sometimes it wrinkles. Straightening at least sometimes is not easy, but real. If there is no special machine at hand and the damage is not very serious, you can even give the injured wheel its original shape on occasion even with a sledgehammer. But for the simplicity and unpretentiousness, the reckoning is literally not easy: a steel disk is usually quite heavy. Another minus will upset the aesthetes: the technology for the production of steel wheels does not allow to be particularly sophisticated with the design, so they all look the same.

Alloy wheels are another matter: they are capable of forcing the buyer to reach for a wallet only on the exterior. Types and forms - for every taste. Therefore, automotive fashion makes accessible and tenacious steel wheels move. In addition to the aesthetic argument, car managers give another “solid” reason: they say, thanks to the gain of “light alloys” in weight, the load on the transmission, suspension, brakes and wheel bearings are reduced compared to steel wheels. No need to believe. All this is nothing more than a myth. True, he has some reasons, but too insignificant: the difference in weight between steel and alloy is 50-100 grams. More rarely.

Woo … in the forge?

Alloy wheels are made either by casting or by forging.

Casting almost does not produce waste - it reduces the cost of production and pleasantly affects the selling price. In addition, casting allows any disc design options. True, beauty requires sacrifice: a cast disk requires serious surface protection, otherwise it will necessarily be covered with a whitish oxide film. But the main problem of cast wheels is their extreme fragility: such a disk simply splits from impact. And there is only one way to increase the mechanical strength of casting - to increase the thickness of the walls, which means to make the wheel heavier.

Forging, on the contrary, is very unpretentious in operation. And such discs are more resistant to corrosion, since they are usually coated with a special varnish. Many are convinced that forged wheels are preferable in terms of strength. However, this is not quite true. The fragility of the disk is much more dependent on the chemical composition of the metal and heat treatment than on the method of its production. The strength of forged discs is in fact very comparable with the strength of cast alloys - due to the fact that casting allows you to vary the chemical composition, they use a standard alloy for forging. But, of course, the forged disk is stronger than the cast one made of the same material. And a forged disc is usually a kilogram lighter than a cast one.

Cast and forged wheels made of aluminum and magnesium alloys. According to the degree of increase in strength, they are arranged in the following order: 1) cast magnesium; 2) cast aluminum; 3) forged aluminum; 4) forged magnesium. The latter is the most-most: durable, prestigious and, as a result, expensive. But cast magnesium is not at all for Russian roads. When driving through our potholes and potholes, it cracks right away - a waste of money. In those discs that are on our shelves, magnesium is very small. And in its pure form, magnesium wheels are cast in very small batches for athletes, and they are monstrously expensive.
