Once the chief engineer for the chassis of the company SAAB Ekkehard Schwartz was asked to tell how he sees the new 9-3. Instead of answering, Schwartz grabbed a pencil and scribbled on a piece of paper … a cartoon of a smiling driver. In response to puzzled looks, a comment followed: the car should be built "around a person" and give pleasure from driving. Now the little man drawn by Schwartz is a symbol of the advertising campaign of the newest sedan 9–3.

Sedan? That's right - unlike the previous generation 9–3, represented by a hatchback, coupe and convertible, the successor so far has just a sedan. The car is called the first step to the largest SAAB reforms in the history of the company; it is possible that we are talking about further integration with General Motors. It is difficult to say how far the reforms will go, but now the shape of the front wings 9–3 resembles the Opel Vectra, and from the stern the Swedish car can be confused with the Omega.

Ergonomics of the driver's seat are given a lot of attention. At the same time, family traits (for example, a panel saturated with buttons in aviation) will please conservatives. Passengers, for whom comfort is more important, will not feel crowded, even if they reseed at 9–3 from the older model 9–5: after all, the base of the novelty increased by 71 mm.

The prefix “Sport” in the title 9–3 is quite justified, although there will be no revelations for the owners of the previous model. Three versions of gasoline engines with turbocharging are new, but, as before, of the same volume - 2 liters. Power varies significantly: from 110 kW / 150 hp up to 155 kW / 210 hp Fans of economy are addressed with a 2.2-liter turbodiesel, burning on average only 6.5 liters of fuel per 100 km.

All engines can be combined with both mechanical and automatic transmissions, the latter being controlled by buttons on the steering wheel. And the driver of the most powerful modification, traditionally called the “Aero”, gets at its disposal the sixth step in the “manual” box.

SAAB would not have been SAAB if it had not once again emphasized the safety of the novelty. This is facilitated by twice the torsional rigidity of the body; “Side effect” was refined handling. When creating 9–3 engineers defeated 75 prototypes, pushing them head-on with trucks and light vehicles at speeds up to 120 km / h. The second generation of active SAHR headrests debuted on the machine, complementing six airbags and electronic ABS systems, stabilizing the ESP trajectory and EBD braking force distribution.

“This car is obedient and responsive like no other SAAB,” Peter Augustsson, president of SAAB Automobile, enthusiastically told reporters. If so, there will be no end to buyers.
