In a modern car there will always be a fraction of explosives. They serve our … safety: inflate rescue pillows, tighten belts. The choice in favor of pyrotechnics was made not by accident: a microexplosion provides the necessary power and speed.
However, there are no ideal solutions - and pyro cartridge can find specific disadvantages. When triggered, gases are released that are not harmless to humans. Moreover, they cannot repeat the encore process. Perhaps this is not so important for a pillow - its replacement is, of course, not cheap, but since it worked, it means that there is still an expensive repair of the tin. Another thing is belt tensioners. Recently, intelligent systems of passive safety have been spreading, predicting road accidents and including the same tensioners in advance (ЗР, 2000, No. 6). Well, throw away the triggered device and replace it with a new one? But it is not so simple and certainly costs a lot.
Siemens specialists shifted the “burden” of the belt onto a small but very powerful electric motor. In the same fractions of a second, its rotor accelerates to 6000 rpm and through the gearbox performs its difficult task. Using sensors, the system determines the weight of each passenger and, in accordance with the actual deceleration, calculates the necessary belt tension force so that each crew member is in the seat at the right time in the right position and meets the airbag deploying in an optimal way.
If it only seems to the computer that the danger of an accident is great, nothing will prevent, in the event of a happy outcome, turning off the engine again and thereby returning passengers comfort and freedom … until the next time.
