In 1995, when the long “Niva” of the “currency”, fashionable at that time, appeared in the parking lot of the editorial office, such cars were a curiosity. Since then, the Steam Locomotive - given the nickname VAZ 2131 - has traveled a little more than 108 thousand kilometers, stepping over the declared resource of the plant - 90 thousand.

The car worked mainly in the city and on the highway, almost never saw heavy off-road. According to our observations, for VAZ 2131 such operating conditions are rather typical. The car is expensive, patency due to the long base is lower than that of the usual Niva, so the 31st serves as a spacious wagon rather than an all-terrain vehicle for residents of large cities.

The life story of the Steam Locomotive - almost all the malfunctions that happened in 6 years and 108 thousand - are in the table. Niva finished its long journey at home, in Togliatti, where VAZ specialists dismantled and defective the car.

Engine. Heart (VAZ 2121 3 with a working volume of 1.7 l) The engine got a healthy one. Oil consumption did not exceed the norm, fuel efficiency envied even the owners of short "cornfields". In his youth, with imported oil in the transmission, on the “kindly” tires, the 31st outside the city fit into 10.5 l / 100 km, if you keep the speedometer needle between the divisions “90” and “110”.

Carburetor repair and replacement of exhaust system parts are mandatory operations. The breaker cover, switch, and high-voltage wires, as ordered, departed from the official resource. The carburetor did not reach him. When the jamming of the dampers and other failures became chronic, the device had to be replaced.

The motor demanded the first relatively serious intervention after 100 thousand (see table) - it was time to tackle the camshaft drive. Unfortunately, the repair went contrary to the commandment “do no harm” … but more on that below.

A complete disassembly and study of the engine at the 109th thousand showed that it is not quite healthy. Apparently, Niva sipped a couple of times of low-quality oil: piston rings coked, their mobility decreased. At the ends of the valves appeared a small output: obviously, they stopped rotating.

In old age (102 thousand km), the mistake of the repairmen almost ruined the motor. Pieces of a damper broken by an extended chain were not removed from the sump, and they thoroughly clogged the oil receiver grid. In the last days of life, the emergency oil pressure lamp went out only when the tachometer needle exceeded 1000 rpm. The insidious plastic, walking along the engine, left traces on the crankshaft's main liners. However, while they can not be changed.

Specialists put the “C grade” to the cylinder-piston group. After a thorough flushing and replacement of the valve stem seals that had lost their elasticity, the motor would have gone another 30 thousand. According to factory statistics, the 1.7-liter engines on the Niva with qualified service run 100-150 thousand km. Our unit is a strong middle peasant.

The clutch worked clearly and for quite some time. The first set (driven disk and release bearing) was changed to the 48th thousand, the second one left another 60. The native main and working cylinders, as well as the leading disk, worked the entire mileage without complaints.

An autopsy revealed a driven disk worn down to rivets and a grease-free release bearing. Both are naturally replaceable. The “basket” leaves another 30 thousand - an excellent result. In general, the clutch of a short car works well on the five-door model 2131 - of course, making this conclusion, taking into account the sparing operation.

Transmission. Perhaps this unit was the most troublesome. Bearings, synchronizers, gears and shifting forks had to be changed to the 48th thousand. On the 75th, the stuffing box of the secondary shaft “lost weight”, and soon the fourth gear again disappeared. They sinned: they traveled from III to V, and by 108 thousand she also stopped turning on.

An impressive list of failed parts was made at the plant: primary and secondary shafts (wear of splines), gears and clutches of synchronizers of the third-fourth and fifth gears (tooth ends were knocked down), the input ring of the input shaft bearing (collapsed), and the third-fourth fifth gear (maximum wear). After replacing these parts, the box goes through 30 thousand, and then … it's easier to buy a new box.

According to the reviews of many owners of “Niv”, an aggregate leading a pedigree from a VAZ 2101 box for 4x4 cars, especially with an extended base, is rather weak. Of course, there are long-lived units that are lucky with the quality of parts and assembly. Box Steam Engine - not one of them.

The transfer case worked better, although it also did not do without intervention - the input shaft bearing cage fell apart on the 48th thousand. Two times the bolts of the SHRUS of the intermediate shaft were turned away. The malfunction seems to be frivolous, but unpleasant. The hinge is disconnected and the machine can only be tugged off.

The second half of life, "razdatka" did not create problems. Dismantling showed: the unit is absolutely operational, except for the nut of the flange of the rear propeller shaft, which has been weakened from vibrations. Pulling it up, you can safely ride another 50 thousand.

Cardan drives, wheel drives and axles. The reinforced “Nivovskie” universal joints of the driveshafts worked without comment the entire mileage and after 108 thousand are not satisfactory. The intermediate propeller shaft support had to be changed to the 75th thousand.

Front-wheel drives survived the timely replacement of external covers and therefore worked flawlessly. After replacing the lubricant and the newly cracked rubber corrugations, the drives, according to experts, will last up to 200 thousand.

Axle bearings, replaced simultaneously (on the 61st and 67th thousand), while in normal condition. Predicting their future is difficult due to the unstable quality of the parts.

The front and rear axles were not disturbed either by breakdowns or by increased noise. Factory experts, examining the nodes, assured: 50 thousand can be driven without fear.

Suspension. The early replacement of ball bearings on the "Lada" and "cornfields", alas, has not surprised anyone for a long time. So on the Steam Engine dry, without a trace of lubrication, the "balls" had to be thrown away when the mileage barely reached 20 thousand km. After 16 thousand, the rear shock absorbers went to scrap. Fortunately, the troubles ended there. Factory upper ball bearings and front shock absorbers deviated a full resource - 84 and 90 thousand, respectively. "But" the next, the second set of upper ball worn out in less than 20 thousand.

To ride our Niva further, you need to change the silent blocks, bushings of the rear suspension rods (however, it is easier to buy the rods assembly) and - again! - rear shock absorbers. The state of the front suspension allows you to adjust the camber. However, it is better to change the levers assembly: after 30 thousand they will still have to be removed due to deformation, which will not allow you to correctly set the wheel angles.

The steering did not require costs of up to almost 100 thousand, when, finally, it was necessary to change the lateral tie rods (the tips of the average thrust are still in good condition and obviously will survive thousands to 150) and the swingarm. Soon appeared fatal play in the steering gear. The reason was revealed by an autopsy - the place of oil flowing through the bipod shaft seal was taken by water. Corrosion is ruthless - the mechanism will have to be changed.

The brakes were first repaired only at the 75th thousand. The second set of discs will serve the same number of thousands to 150 (thickness 10.5 mm with a maximum permissible 9.5 mm), the rear cylinders are functional, and there are still no cracks on the hoses. However, of course, it is time to part with them - after all, they have been working for six years. The front cylinders, tormented by Moscow salty roads, again require attention - the pistons wedge. They will have to swing or change cylinders.

Electrical equipment. A generator that failed at the 70th is the only serious trouble for the entire life of the car. There were not many trifles either. The fight against headlight cleaners was stopped long ago: it makes no sense to spend money and time on their replacement. A failed coolant temperature sensor and a rusted sound signal are common faults. Surprisingly: in six years and 108 thousand, only one reversing light switch “died”. In general, the electrical equipment of Niva did not deliver any particular worries.

Body. It's no secret that many still relate to the VAZ 2131 with caution: well, how will the long body “break”? The engine denied the skeptics. The stand of the German company "Schenk" recorded a decrease in body stiffness by 8.7% (6340 N.m / deg against the original 6940 N.m / deg). Factory standards allow a reduction of up to 10% during life tests. By the way, since 1997 VAZ 2131 bodies have been reinforced - rigidity 7400 N.m / deg.

Formally, you can ride on our Niva, but … corrosion is ruthless. Six years and more than 100 thousand Moscow mileage - a death sentence to a car. Twice - at the beginning of life and at the 49th thousand they did a complete anticorrosive. The second time the servicemen even overdid it: they filled the doors in such a way that the glass guides, impregnated with the company compound, became completely numb. Nevertheless, today the thresholds and doors are corroded to holes, yellow bubbles surrounded the hinges of the tailgate, peered out from under the edging of windows, rust tightly clung to the floor. No complicated and expensive welding and painting work is necessary.

Total VAZ 2131 as a city car has proven to be relatively reliable and durable. Ninety thousand kilometers - the official service life - turned out to be quite in the teeth of a steam locomotive. To add reliability to the box and the “razdatka”, and the durability of the body … Then it will be possible to say: the real resource of an expensive and, by Russian standards, prestigious car is to match its length. z

Engine. Diagnosis: endures difficulties, including the intervention of unfortunate doctors. Forecast: old age will be worthily met.

Clutch. Diagnosis: viable. Forecast: one “basket” will survive two clutch release.

Transmission. Diagnosis: chronic ailments. Forecast: treat in a hospital.

Transfer case. Diagnosis: suffered childhood diseases. Forecast: will live long.

Cardan drives, wheel drives and axles. Diagnosis: almost healthy. Forecast: along with the "razdatkoy" will enter the club centenarians.

Suspension. Diagnosis: six years without a major bulkhead. Forecast: there is nothing eternal.

Steering. Diagnosis: "on the water" does not work. Forecast: replacement of the complete assembly.

The brakes. Diagnosis: fit for drill. Forecast: they will last longer than the car.
