It is unlikely that the buyer is looking for outstanding external data, a prestigious interior or extraordinary driving qualities in it. All this appears at a completely different price level. And here, where the main competitor is domestic equipment, which does not indulge the consumer with either service or comfort, I want “just” something more qualitative and delicate. And let friends and acquaintances frighten us with the disadvantage of branded service, the high cost of repairs, especially bodywork, and the inappropriateness of tender cars to the climate and roads. Nevertheless, one wants a person for some time to abandon the constant worries about his iron friend.

A couple of “Daewoo Nexia” and “Renault Clio Symbol” (see ZR, 2000, No. 6) were selected by us for similar “ideological” considerations. Moreover, we deliberately cut the budget in order to bring the cost of cars closer to the price of Russian products. Both cars wind up kilometers very energetically - odometers are selected to the mark of a large (20, 000 km) MOT. Their drivers have almost become accustomed to regularly climb under the hoods, look for places of sudden antifreeze and oil leaks, and discuss with their colleagues the secrets of ingenious malfunctions. In order to somehow compensate for the itching in my hands, I got all kinds of auto cosmetics in order to express concern for my iron friend with it.

Another interesting feature showed up. Any, the most insignificant failure in a well-organized “driver-car” system immediately causes irritation. It doesn’t matter whether it is a punctured wheel or a creaking door upholstery - immediately there is a desire to immediately criticize it, and after fixing it, forget it like a bad dream. So, the most serious breakdown at Klio - the failure of the cornering relay - immediately caused a feeling of, if you like, joyful indignation: it has begun! However, as it turned out at the service station, the defect is characteristic of the entire batch of cars sold together with ours, so there was no sensation: the relay was changed under warranty, so to speak, in a planned manner. A colleague driving a Nexia, so far, only complains about excessive oil appetite: she eats about a liter of motor oil for 10 000 km of maintenance-free ones. In general, there is no crime, but - you yourself understand …

And yet, I had to adapt to something, because our wards are in many ways not ideal. So, at the Renault Clio, for a long time I could not get used to the low doorway and uncomfortable landing. As if this car was made for long-armed and short-legged, and the rest left only compromise options. Even now, after several months, when I already learned to bow, getting into the car, and “wrong” to drive, inconveniences periodically come out. For example, a short trip through the Vologda expanses showed that the unnaturally curved right leg after 200-300 km of travel gets so tired that you have to stop and give it rest.

Even in the break-in period, Renault was bewitched by unexpectedly high fuel consumption. Unlike the VAZ “eleventh”, in the urban bustle consuming 8.2–8.5 l / 100 km, the “Frenchman” turned out to be voracious by a liter and a half. The perplexity only intensified when on the Symbol highway it easily fit into 6.5–7 l / 100 km. I had to turn to directories. It turned out that the manufacturer honestly promised very similar numbers, so we go in the city “by 10”, and outside it “by 6”.

It should be noted that the process of riding the "Symbol", in general, is not burdensome. Comfortable suspensions, power steering, high-torque motor, good acoustic comfort make this car very convenient, especially in the city. Here, "Klio" is like a fish in water: it sensitively carries out all the driver's commands, without requiring frequent gear changes. You only need to adapt to the too “nervous” brake pedal, which requires just gentle touches. However, in a high-speed stream of suburban routes, our fish is no longer so ideal. Pendants do not cope with gentle waves on asphalt - the body is prone to vertical buildup, especially when loaded. The power steering at high speed is not sufficiently informative, and the car begins to "float" on the road. The engine is noisy at high speeds - the “urban” set of gear ratios affects. In general, you can travel outside the city, but long-distance runs are tiring.

"Daewoo Nexia", on the contrary, is better suited specifically for long trips. An extended series of gear ratios in the box, stiffer ones that are not inclined to swing the suspension body, a different driver’s landing and much more stable behavior at high speed allow you to “sit back” while driving for much more time. Here, much more free feet, there is a certain margin of space along the height and sides, which, in general, is preferable in long journeys than the cramped urban subcompact. However, the venerable age of the model is felt not only in appearance. A sluggish brake pedal, an inconvenient clutch, a fuzzy gearshift mechanism, some kind of stifled engine, as if begging for speed … Even the driver's seat is not only devoid of a hint of lateral support, but just flimsy - it breathes more comfortable with each attempt.

In terms of operational fuel consumption, Nexia is close to Renault: in the city it eats about 9 l / 100 km. But on operational spaces, the situation is changing. Interestingly, in a joint almost two-hundred-kilometer run, both cars showed enviable similarities. No matter how much we discuss the urban essence of one and the route of the other, at each gas station, the same amount of gasoline entered the car tanks. In almost the same way, despite the difference in size and concept, both the Daewoo Nexia and Renault Clio withstood the July heat and a whole set of roads without problems: from good asphalt to cobblestones and even graders laid even under Tsar Peas. Of course, they got a little dusty, gained midges, but returned without losses.

Probably, many again have a reasonable question: so what is it - the real advantage of an inexpensive foreign car? After all, by and large, neither one nor the other car is not without flaws. Moreover, if we compare them with the same “ten”, especially the sixteen-valve, I venture to assume that the latter will be not only faster and more economical, but also much more convenient.

Let us, however, renounce the parade figures in the characteristics and take a different look at the domestic car. Outside - cracks and inconsistencies of parts, dull fabrics and poorly fitted plastic in the cabin. And if you dig a little deeper? Hard-working ventilation system, where the ever-sticking shutters interfere with the normal air circulation, “wipers” creaking and overwriting the windshield, twitching convulsively at high speed, tires and wheels suffering from chronic vibrations, starters living in hectic lives, expansion tanks … This list goes on and on. Agree, all this requires strength, nerves, and most importantly - time.
