“DRY” HOPPEKE BATTERIES

EVEN BROKEN, A NEW BATTERY WILL WORK

Sulfuric acid used in automotive starter batteries has long haunted their developers. Aggressive fluid in the event of an accident can cause trouble by spilling from a cracked body, it strives to evaporate when charging, spoiling the air and paint from the inside of the hood. However, the second misfortune is somehow managed. Special membranes in plugs were invented that cut off large molecules of the actual acid itself or, as with Hoppeke, complex double covers with a labyrinth system.

But as for the first problem - leaks, it turned out to be quite a hard nut. True, we have already written about Optima batteries (ZR, 1998, No. 10) that do not contain liquid electrolyte, but for all their advantages they are expensive. And car manufacturers would like to receive components not only of exceptionally high quality, but also at a price acceptable for mass production. At the Otzenhausen plant, we first saw a successful compromise: in the VLIES.TEC batteries from Hoppeke, flat gaskets located between the plates absorbed all the acid. Of course, they are not made of paper: the basis is fiberglass, not even afraid of “royal vodka”.

The electrolyte filled in on the automatic line is absorbed into the installed gaskets, and after that even a drop will not be spilled even from the case broken in an accident. But that's not all. It turns out that batteries of this design can withstand a significantly larger number of discharge-charge cycles, and their service life will be 8-12 years depending on operating conditions! The cold start current increases by 70–90 A. The most attractive thing for car manufacturers is the low cost of the battery. Since components for Hoppeke batteries, as well as their assembly, are produced only in Germany, where labor is quite expensive, only the highest degree of automation of all technological processes allows maintaining an affordable price.

While VLIES.TEC is installed on the Mercedes-Benz S-Class and, unlike other batteries, is not on sale. (In general, almost half of Hoppeke batteries are used to complete Daimler-Chrysler cars.) Obviously, other consumers will also be connected in the future: Ford, Peugeot, MAN.
