LAST DAY "Ode"

WHAT CHANGED

IN IZHEVSK CAR FOR TWO MINUTES

1TEXT / VLADIMIR ARBUZOV

At one time, as part of the Russian Project, the editors acquired three of the cheapest domestic cars (ZR, 1999, No. 10). Among them was Orbit. We talked about her misfortunes more than once. The car at that time was, as they say, completely “raw”: breakdowns and imperfections rained down like from a cornucopia. Even the replacement of the body did not help - I had to change the whole car under warranty. But this is a topic for another discussion. Here we’ll talk about what is hidden under high-profile advertising - “IL is seriously and for a long time”, or rather, what kind of car is it with the new name “Oda”.

The capital's Inkom-Lada car dealership has kindly provided us with a brand new, just off the assembly line, latest version of the Ode - the one with the body now galvanized.

Outwardly, as if no changes. However, the color is now not the same: there are no more bubbles and smudges of rust from under the enamel that were on our first car. Moreover, in one place where a small chip from a pebble appeared, a primer layer is visible. It would seem, why mention the obvious - the paint is always applied to the ground, but earlier in some places … on metal!

Tires: instead of the ancient M-145, which according to the characteristics do not correspond to the Ode, now they put the Kama-205. Already better. You can’t take the gas tank hatch with your bare hands - your finger doesn’t slip into the gap, and it’s useless to press on one edge, like on the Zhiguli. The case when the eye sees, but the tooth is numb. The way out is to pick up the edge with the ignition key, or better with a wooden stick - the paint will be whole.

Salon. Door locks work clearly, even with noble soft clanging.

Now let's see what has changed inside. Very little, almost nothing. And yet, in fairness, we note - the windshield and rear windows now do not walk in the seals to the beat of the brushes and do not let rain into the cabin. The gear lever in the forward position does not rest against the panel. But this can perhaps put an end to.

Still, the hunchback dashboard on the right side fell a couple of centimeters down. Door seals are glued very sparingly, with dots, and therefore hang freely in places. One of the fifth door lock screws is simply not screwed. And to top it off - a niche for the radio through which you can see the insides of the panel. Stubs, alas, are not provided.

Take a look under the hood. There is a change for the better. Radiator hoses are now more logical and much shorter. Only the one that goes to the radiator forms a hump in the middle. In such places, experience shows that a vapor plug will inevitably form and interfere with the normal circulation of the liquid. Perhaps that is why the electric fan of the cooling system buzzes almost continuously on this machine.

A useful innovation is the headlight corrector. It is electro. For example, we corrected the hydraulic corrections of the editorial Niva after repeated replacements - a waste of money. The heater faucet is now placed under the hood and is quite accessible, and the heater's air intake, unfortunately, is the same - with the funnel up. Not the best solution, because snow from the windshield and autumn leaves will very easily clog it. The glass washer pump "moved" from under the radiator, where it stood on the draft itself (the water in it froze instantly), closer to the tank - it is much warmer there.

Engine. Apparently, our car factories (or dealers who are entrusted with pre-sales training) will not soon begin to sell cars, as is customary in the world - "sat down - went."

The motor of our Oda worked unevenly, twitching, as it once did in the first Orbit. The defect was detected in the distribution switch. It seems that it worked in a semi-handicraft workshop - a shaft with an eccentricity, the bearing is not rolled and walks in the nest as he pleases. But the wiring on the new machine is much more accurate than on the previous one. Where necessary - the wiring harnesses are fixed in the clamps.

Well, consider that the machine is suitable for operation. Let's try it in action!

The brakes first. They seemed to us too tight and not very effective. When braking, a “crushing noise” is heard. Probably, the friction surfaces have not yet rubbed in - after two hundred kilometers the noise began to gradually subside.

The car is playful, in general, maneuverable, but you feel the unwillingness of the wheels to return from the turn to the “straight” position well - you have to help them manually. Although the angles of the wheels seem to be all right. The car holds the road well, rolls easily and confidently passes corners. Apparently, only the longitudinal inclination of the axles of the rotation of the wheels (caster) is small, or the joints are tight, while new. Again, it will be possible to judge this with confidence a little later, after a longer run.

It is still noisy in the car - vibration and sound insulation leaves much to be desired. The motor roars, loudly, the electric fan of the cooling system works almost constantly. The wiper blades are fixed somehow.

After several hours of movement in the cabin, you smell the burning rubber - it is exuded by a duct from a hot deflector on the exhaust pipe to the air filter. In summer, it is better to remove this hose, and in winter … replace it with a non-combustible one, for example, from Zhiguli.

On the lift. Some changes for the better are visible from below. The exhaust pipe now does not sag to the ground, trying to catch on any bump. The brake pipes are galvanized and will probably not rust. The front shock absorber struts are still airtight - they flowed on the old Ode for the first hundreds of kilometers. But the parking brake cables pass, as before, under the rocker rods of the rear axle and on the road will not live long. It is worth moving them over the rods.

It is good that the elements of the thresholds and wings are galvanized, but it is more important for the buyer to know how they resist corrosion. With confidence, that the body does not rust, it will be possible in two or three salty winters. However, such an opportunity will be - our "Ode" is from the very last issue and is made exactly as it is imagined and how factory workers can do it today. We will inform readers about how her life will turn out.

And the last one. It happens that we are accused of unjustified favor for VAZ products. Say, we are engaged, etc. But what about the facts? Of course, by world standards, all VAZ cars, including the "dozens", are assembled extremely carelessly, and they are full of design flaws. Of the few evils it is customary to choose the lesser. If two years ago the Izhevsk machine was significantly (59 thousand rubles against 69) cheaper than the Six, today they both cost about 100 thousand each. So, comparing them will be quite correct. Let's see in whose favor.

With bare hands

do not take it!

More thoroughly necessary!

The right corner of the panel has failed, but did not affect the price.

Nothing -

do not tighten the screw.

This hump will certainly gather air.

Headlight corrections are a useful addition.

A cable under traction will crush
