THE LARGEST IS NOT

HOW SIZE CAN A VEHICLE GROW?

Ford Excursion has been on sale in the USA for more than a year, but only recently appeared in Russia. The world's largest production SUV created on the basis of the F-350 pickup. Curb weight - over 3 tons. It is equipped with gasoline engines V8 5.4 liters and V10 6.7 liters, as well as a turbodiesel V8 7.3 liters. The drive is for all or only the rear wheels, the gearbox is a four-stage hydromechanical “automatic machine”. In Russia, they offer only all-wheel drive cars in the most luxurious version of Limited with a gasoline “ten” or a diesel engine.

THEORY OF RELATIVITY

It is claimed that dark colors conceal dimensions. Perhaps that is why at first glance the dimensions of the Ford Excursion are not striking, although the closest competitor, Chevrolet Saberben, it has outgrown the base by 178 mm, length by 188, and width by 30 mm. And Ford is 126 mm taller and 500 kg heavier. And yet, the solidity of the car is given not so much by the dimensions as the monumental radiator lining and the powerful chrome bumper. Even the blue oval of the Ford logo is so large that not every palm can close it.

The chrome splendor of the front end is continued by the wheels and the rear bumper. Thanks to them, Ford Excursion exudes charm … no, not a luxury car, but with the love of a kicked locomotive. However, the first impression is deceptive. Maybe the interior can change it?

PASSENGERS, GO TO THE SALON!

I would like to say something like this by looking in the inner mirror - the rear window is too far into it. Of course, there are three rows of seats, which comfortably accommodate eight people. The fourth row of “custom” seats, which turns the Excursion into a bus, is placed backwards in a huge trunk. By the way, unlike the competitor GM, here they are quite suitable for adults.

Of course, the "first-class seats" in the two front rows of seats are spacious enough for passengers of any height and build, doorways allow you to sit in and go out with royal dignity. And in order not to step in the dark where it should not, the body steps are equipped with a backlight. In the third row there are also plenty of places, but landing and disembarkation are not so convenient. In addition, high seat backs are not in American tradition: a tall man will wish for more thorough back support.

You don’t have to complain about stuffiness or cold: the extensive network of air ducts in the ceiling and a separate air conditioning and ventilation control panel allow you to create the right microclimate. Stagnant air in the rear of the passenger compartment can be vented through non-emptying windows that are ajar by the electric drive (!)

If you remove the third row of seats, the trunk of the impressive becomes simply grandiose. The unusual three-winged back door is nevertheless very practical - it is easy to fetch the necessary ones out of the heap of suitcases and bags without spilling the rest onto the road.

ON RUBBER

Despite the impressive working volume, the engine spins up to about 5200 rpm, although the maximum power is at a moderate 4250. The peak torque is only a thousand lower, but this does not mean a lack of traction on the “bottoms” - even at 1000 rpm this monster will give out more than 500 N.m. So you don’t need to “twist” the motor, especially since at revs above average it is not at all quiet.

Three hundred or more “horses” under the hood are tuned to an optimistic mood and made to forget about more than three-ton mass of the car. Or rather - almost forget. The “soft” torque converter characteristic makes gear shifting inconspicuous, but delays acceleration. Switching to lower gears occurs more or less efficiently only when it is necessary to “reset” one step. But the transition from "overdrive", for example, to the second takes noticeably more time …

Nevertheless, the Ford Excursion is able to easily gain and maintain a cruising speed of 120–130 km / h, while the maximum is prudently limited to 153 km / h. And for good reason. Feels like "Excursion" is closer to a truck than to a car. He is quite capable of holding the road at high speed or moving in the forefront of a dense city stream, but sharp maneuvers are not for him. Dependent suspension on long leaf springs front and rear provides acceptable ride and excellent energy consumption, but makes the management specific. Ford is reluctant to change direction, does not like asphalt waves in a bend, requires accurate steering. Fortunately, the impressive mass and long base endow it with outstanding stability.

UNKNOWN FORD

How not to try an all-wheel drive car on the road! A broken (not to smithereens) wet primer or grassy slope is not an obstacle for a giant: you just need to turn on the front axle. If you need to move especially carefully, you can use the lower gear - with it the traction capabilities of the Ford are unlimited.

But the dimensions still should not be discounted. A long base and relatively low ground clearance do not allow careless frolic on rough terrain, and a solid mass will make you think three times before going to the "sour" meadow. But the highly located engine and interior will help to cross the stream without problems, in which a light little off-road vehicle would simply drown.

HEALTHY APPETIT

Gas tanks, which fit more than 1000 rubles, are not common - there are 167-liter capacity under the trunk floor of the Excursion compartment. If you set a goal, then at one gas station you can drive more than 1000 km on country roads. Well, and managed to achieve a flow rate of less than 15 l / 100 km - feel free to claim eco-rally. You may not be a champion, but you won’t be left without a prize. The average consumption on a suburban highway is 17–18 l per “hundred”, in a city without traffic jams - 22–24 l / 100 km, and on a heavy dirt road that requires the front axle to be turned on, 35–40 l / 100 km and even more.

DIESEL ALTERNATIVE

A diesel engine in a car of this mass and size is a very reasonable offer. Moreover, the real "cargo" engine with a volume of 7.3 liters with eight cylinders, an inseparable combustion chamber and a turbocharger. Its power (188 kW / 250 hp) may not be so impressive, but the torque of 709 Nm at 1600 rpm is beyond competition. During the presentation, the diesel Excursion walked so confidently through the deep sand that even seasoned jeepers shook their heads approvingly. In a word, there was no doubt that this car could pull a trailer weighing 4.5 tons. Another joy for the owner is the fuel consumption is 15–40% lower than that of the gasoline model.

So a considerable difference in price (diesel Excursion is more expensive by $ 4, 800) may well pay off. However, with the price of a gasoline variant of 69 900 dollars, it is not so great.

CANCEL THE BORDER!

This is how the advertising slogan for all-wheel drive Ford cars sounds. "Excursion" is consistent with this idea. At least, he has already canceled the borders between off-road vehicles, buses and trucks (or installed new ones). Will even larger production SUVs appear? Hardly: the limit of the rational has already been reached.
