You can talk about the name of the car and its nationality for a long time. For example, a three- or five-door hatchback is called the Palio, a four-door sedan is called Siena (not supplied to Russia), and a five-door station wagon is called the Palio Weekend. And all of them, despite the Italian brand, are not produced in their historical homeland. Since the birth of the Palio have been made in Brazil, since 1997 they began to produce in Poland, and since 2002 they planned to assemble it in Russia, at Nizhny Novgorod Motors. The new owner of GAZ - SIBAL has not yet confirmed or refuted this information, so we will leave the possibility of releasing this machine with us for now.

HOW MUCH IS

The price of "FIAT-Palio" is formed traditionally, depending on the configuration of the buyer. Basic, for the “without everything” model, is $ 8, 200 plus a surcharge for options. If you want a car with a hydraulic booster - add another $ 300 to the original number, ABS - another $ 500, air conditioning you want - plus $ 700 and it is yours. Power windows and central locking will cost $ 420, heating the driver's seat - $ 450, metallic painted body - $ 200.

Approximately $ 500 will have to pay extra for the built-in radio, an airbag (you can order two for the driver and the right passenger) and mud flaps in the wheel arches (!). Adding the numbers in a column (or on a calculator), we get a decent appendage - no less than half the price of the base car. However, the opportunity to buy for the money the next representative of the lineup (in our case, FIAT-Marea) in the automotive market is more likely a rule than an exception. It remains to add that the wagon "Palio Weekend" (ZR, 1998, No. 8) will cost significantly more than a hatchback. Its price starts at $ 11, 600.

"PALIO" IN THE CITY

The appearance of the machine to the urban rhythm of life is already evidenced by its appearance. A small stocky car with impressive ground clearance (do we like to drive into curbs?), Good visibility, large wheel arches (who constantly travels in winter will appreciate) and … inexpensive by the standards of a foreign car, “tin”. Alas, buying a car for a big city, you have to think about it.

But continue the conversation about the pleasant. An eight-valve engine with a very comfortable “pull-up” characteristic, very easy gear shifting with excellent selectivity of the gearbox (moves, though not small), and good maneuverability will be counted as an asset to the car. The latter is achieved, among other things, thanks to the steering rack with a variable gear ratio: small at small steering angles and noticeably increasing with a larger steering wheel amplitude.

The minor flaws include the not-so-good view through the left driver’s mirror, the lack of automatic switching on of the brushes when using the washer (maybe we were unlucky with a specific specimen?) And an unusually damped steering wheel. They found an explanation for the latter circumstance: when the steering wheel makes only 2.5 turns from lock to lock, a small car looks not so much maneuverable as it is swiveling. Perhaps that is why the designers did not begin to adjust the power steering so that the steering wheel rotated with one finger. At high speed, this may be unsafe. At first, some steering damping seems unusual, but soon you get used to it and stop paying attention.

PALIO ON THE HIGHWAY

Engines of inexpensive foreign cars sold in Russia have a modest displacement - otherwise, how can you ensure a low price? Here, in our case, the motor is 1242 cmz. But let's not forget: FIAT has always made small engines well. Although the torque is small, the driver has 70 with the “horses” and the “correct” torque characteristic at the disposal of the driver. In general, you can go fast, but you have to turn the motor and, working with the gear lever, do not be lazy. To ensure normal dynamics, the gears are close here: the second one spins up to 50-60 km / h (you can continue, but the car is a pity), the third - up to about 80, and when driving in the fourth, to 100-110 km / h, the motor itself resembles: it's time to turn on the fifth. Overtaking truckers, you often have to “poke” the fourth gear, moving to the fifth during the maneuver. Here again you say thanks to the designers for the box.

At speeds with which the car is able to drive, the brakes do a good job of their duties - ventilated discs in the front and drum discs in the back. Somewhat alerted to the high sensitivity of the pedal - this is more likely characteristic of cars with ABS. Handling the middle pedal on slippery roads requires caution.

Like many current cars, the FIAT-Palio rear suspension provides a taxiing effect. In regular modes, this is perceived as a blessing. However, with very intense “changes” from side to side, the car can “unwind” - the “sharp” steering wheel helps in this. So "indulge" is not worth it.

THE ROAD ENDS

Moving off the asphalt, the Palio discovers two trump cards - a very energy-intensive suspension and high ground clearance. Let's not be surprised: the version of the machine delivered to us was designed specifically for Russia (they say, learned to tolerate the cold in Yakutia). Soft shock absorbers are designed to provide comfort on a good road, and not dampen the buildup of a body on a bad one. The height of the main elements from the road is impressive: protection of the engine compartment - 165 mm (for an unloaded car), resonator and gas tank - 195, rear beam - 200, side members - 205, muffler - 210. And this is for a small car! In one, only a small misfire: between the halves of the engine compartment protection, a small bellows of the receiving pipe was cluttered - also at a height of 165 mm. He does not look weak and defenseless, but still …

PALIO

FOR PASSENGERS AND CARGO

In the cabin and trunk - nothing supernatural. The space is exactly as much as you would expect from a small car. The front is comfortable, the landing is quite high - it’s more convenient to get into the car, in addition, you can leave more space behind. The steering wheel is adjustable in height, seats - medium hardness with a large pillow. The only complaint is that there is no rigid fixation of the head restraints. When turning, sometimes you accidentally push them with your head all the way down. Behind the driver’s back, everything is also familiar: for two - it’s normal, for three - it’s a bit crowded. For some reason, the rear seat belts are not inertial. Probably, it is supposed that they will ride infrequently, and only to fasten their clothes … on the back? Maybe this is part of the program to adapt the machine to Russian conditions?

The hatchback has a small trunk, which, however, is also traditional. The only thing you should regret is the solid back of the back seat - you won’t be able to fold it in parts, only in its entirety. The absence of hardboard covering a niche with a spare wheel is unusual - there is only a rug. The decoration of the car is modest, but the management of auxiliary equipment seems to be thought out - you don’t have to go anywhere.

PALIO BROKEN

It should not, of course, but anything happens. It is nice that the adaptation touched the price of service and spare parts. Cheaper, of course, it happens, but rarely. Say, original bumpers can be bought for $ 150 (which is already inexpensive); non-original, but branded - at $ 100; finally, “unknown” manufacturers - for $ 80! Potential buyers of FIAT will surely note the dignity and tires of the Zhiguli dimension 175 / 70R13 (the main thing is not to forget about the high-speed tire index). The warranty for the car is one year without a mileage limit, for the body - six years.
