Someone joked bitterly: a pessimist is a well-informed optimist. I don’t want to exaggerate, but interruptions in supplies and sharp jumps in fuel prices cause gloomy thoughts. In turn, the number of not-so-perfect cars is growing on the roads, transportation volumes are increasing - all this leads to a further deterioration of the environmental situation. What we breathe in the city, you begin to understand, having left beyond its limits.

What “diet” can help transport? According to experts, one of the real recipes is a gradual transition from traditional gasoline and diesel fuel to alternative fuels. As such, liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) (propane-butane) and compressed natural gas LNG (methane) are already used.

CHOICE DIET

We try to talk about both promising and implemented developments in the field of gasification (see ЗР, 1997, No. 6; 1999, No. 5, 6; 2000, No. 7; 2001, No. 5). A significant part of those publications concerned gas fuel systems for carburetor engines. They are based on mechanical control of the fuel mixture. However, such devices are characterized by instability of parameters during operation and not always optimal dosing. As a result, the owner has to constantly monitor the fuel system adjustments or put up with deficiencies in the engine, both at idle and in transient conditions. And the environmental characteristics of exhaust gases do not look the best. Is there something more modern?

Let's talk about the work of the popular car "Daewoo Nexia", specially equipped for the use of three types of fuel: gasoline, liquefied petroleum gas (propane-butane) and natural gas (methane). On the one hand, we will be able to objectively evaluate the driving performance of a car for each type of fuel, on the other hand, to understand how effective the electronic regulation of fuel supply is not only for gasoline but also for gas. It is important that all components of such a system are already mass-produced.

"Daewoo Nexia" 1999 "birth" ran at the time of testing 86, 300 km. After running in gasoline (the first 7 thousand km), the car without any problems beat the next 58 thousand on propane-butane, and currently runs on methane. A technically sound car before measurements was subjected only to washing gasoline injectors; additionally checked the tire pressure and wheel alignment. The standard equipment is a 1.5-liter engine with distributed gasoline injection (exhaust without a converter). The propane-butane power supply system includes the following elements: a typical 50-liter metal cylinder of domestic production (actual supply of gas fuel is 40 l); multivalve; plastic coated copper pipelines; two-stage gas gear in a single housing; gas valve; an emulator for shutting off fuel injectors (the gas pump does not turn off and, when switching to gas, works to drain, maintaining a constant pressure in the ramp; this ensures a normal transition of the engine from gas to gasoline); an electronic dispenser that processes the signal of the lambda probe (the last one from the injection "nine" is installed at the regular place of the exhaust pipe) and controls a stepper motor that controls the gas supply; a mixer at the inlet of the intake manifold; an electric switch from gasoline to gas and vice versa - all Italian company Lovato.

A similar system for methane differs from propane-butane high-pressure cylinders, also domestic (there are two of them, the actual supply of gas fuel is 14-17 mz depending on pressure), a three-stage gas reducer in a single housing and a mixer, also produced by Lovato.

ON ROAD

Transferring a test Nexia from one type of gas fuel to another (replacing a number of units and tuning) took no more than 40 minutes. Vehicle parameters were measured by the Korsis complex with a non-contact track sensor in the same weather conditions for one day. True, these conditions were not very conducive to obtaining ceremonial figures (air temperature 8–10 ° C). But for comparison, this is acceptable.

The results of measurements of the dynamics seemed interesting. Firstly, the test car - in great shape and powered by gasoline - did not yield to the young editorial Nexia in the agility. Secondly, we were convinced that the electronics quite successfully coped with their task, so that the difference in the dynamics of acceleration on gasoline and the CIS turned out to be small. With the mechanical system (recall the editorial "nine") the difference is much greater. We make a reservation that when measuring the dynamics on gasoline, the gas mixer in the intake manifold was not dismantled. Therefore, the results correspond to the dynamic performance of the car in actual use (with a dual-fuel system on board).

The next day was devoted to measuring the operating costs of fuel. For this purpose, on the roads of the NICIAMT training ground, they chose a route with a total length of 104.8 km. Of these, 70 km along the expressway imitated the highway, 34.8 km of service and access roads - the city regime. This proportion is typical, say, for trips to the country.

Based on the data on fuel stock on board and expenses (see Table 2), you can independently calculate the profitability of operating Nexia on three types of fuel. For completeness, it remains to take into account the cost of the systems themselves. According to the rates of the Moscow company "Resol Avtogaz", the official dealer "Lovato", the cost of gas equipment with installation is: for the CIS 424 at. e., including an electronic dispenser, plus 370 rubles per lambda probe; for LNG - 834 oz. e., including two fuel cylinders (500 cu).

Smells of the Future

Electronic fuel metering systems have shown a number of advantages over mechanical (inherent carburetor motors), they significantly improve the performance of the car. This is true not only for gasoline, but also for alternative CIS and LNG.

Of course, the direct use of the CIS and LNG as an alternative type of fuel is not a panacea for all problems. But still, gas (especially LNG) is more promising than gasoline and diesel fuel - thanks to its vast reserves and more favorable environmental characteristics. By the way, the power system for compressed natural gas from a technical point of view can be adapted to work on hydrogen.
