The story usually goes about mechanics: motors, gearboxes, suspensions and more. But a fast car is half the battle. Today we touch on comfort and take care of noise reduction.

THE TASK

Given: a standard car VAZ 2109 3 with an injection engine of one and a half liters, a set of vibration and noise insulation materials from Rosecoplast. Requires: reduce noise.

The task is not as simple as it seems at first glance. Combating vehicle noise with special materials is essentially a passive method. The result will certainly be relatively modest - you can’t make a Mercedes from Samara. After all, the main fight against noise is carried out at the stage of creating the car, and if the car "turned out" noisy, then without serious intervention in the design it is difficult to cure it. In our case, the experimental car is far from the loudest, by domestic standards, of course. Can we improve something?

ISOLATE AND ABSORBE

Five types of vibration and noise insulation materials were used in the work. Vibroizol-2.0 and Vibrofol-2.0 fought with vibration. Both coatings are self-adhesive, the second, in addition, with a special protective foil. Vibroizol is most effective at low noise frequencies. Vibrofol operates in a wider range, showing the best results in the field of medium sound frequencies. The task of vibration isolation is to change the oscillation frequency of those body parts on which the material is glued. The fact is that this or that body panel, vibrating with a certain frequency, serves as a kind of membrane that makes a sound. So vibration isolation does not drown out the noise, but fights its source. Let's pay attention: vibration isolation material is most effective, while it is two to three times thicker than body metal. The thicker one is not working properly anymore.

Sound-absorbing materials are also self-adhesive: “Shumizol-15K ST” and “Shumizol-15K PET” are special foam rubber with a coating, respectively, of fiberglass and polymer film. Soundproofing material "Penokol-5.0" - a polymer that does not absorb moisture.

The installation diagram of the noise isolation kit is shown in the figure. Previously, 14.6 kg of standard sound insulation was removed from the car. The weight of the newly installed noise and vibration damping pads is about 21 kg. The technology of work is as follows: first, a plate of vibration-damping material is glued to the surface, and on top of it is the corresponding sound insulation. For example, the hood is “duplicated” with foam rubber coated with fiberglass to protect it from exposure to aggressive environments and high temperatures. A third, polymeric material is laid on the floor of the cabin as additional insulation and to protect the foam rubber dampener from moisture. The polymer, recall, does not absorb water. Sound insulation appeared where the factory does not install it: on the panels and door trim, trunk floor, rear panel, engine shield, instrument panel.

The results of measurements by the standard methodology (Tables 1, 2) show a decrease in the level of internal noise by 2 and external noise by 1 dBA. Not so little, if you remember that dBA is a logarithmic quantity (see our help). Extended measurements (Table 3) showed in which direction to improve the noise insulation kit. At a speed of 100 km / h in the front passenger area, the noise slightly increased - the engine is clearly audible. It would be better to help a heavier noise-insulating material on a non-woven basis, similar to that installed at the factory. But in general, the car became a little quieter, subjectively, it is clearly noticeable.

Is the game worth the candle? Soundproofing kit cost us $ 80 (without trade "markups"). Installation work is simple, but painstaking and quick. You can turn to specialists, but how much they will take for this work and how they will do it is a question. The installation price in Moscow “floats” from 70 to 150 dollars. It is reasonable to combine the installation of noise insulation with other work that requires dismantling the cabin (anti-corrosion treatment, “paint brush”). Well, for those who want to make a sweetie out of their favorite car, the weekend spent in the garage is a common thing.
