We rewrite the instruction:

when and how much to service the car.

Each domestic car is accompanied by a service book, which sets out the work and the frequency of maintenance. But it is designed, first of all, for service workers who receive a specific car like a pig in a poke and must prepare it for further operation. For a person who starts self-service of his car, which he knows for more than one day (month, year), many operations will seem justifiably far-fetched: like checking the operation of the wiper (recommended to be done on “Muscovites” every 10 thousand) or draining sludge from the fuel tank (prescribed “Volga” as seasonal service). Moreover, the stations also refuse some work, cutting off the unnecessary on the basis of experience. On the other hand, it is useful to supplement the books: for example, in the Zhiguli one it is regulated to check the tension of the generator belt … but there is no indication to adjust!

When compiling an alternative service book, we addressed it (wow, it turns out beautifully - instructions, like a solid publication, are preceded by an appeal to the reader!) Not to the service, but to the owner. A person who constantly uses a car, a stranger to technology - and we assume that this is so, since he is ready to take care of it himself - knows the state of components and systems and does not need reminders like “check the operation of door locks”.

The list of operations left what seems to require no attention during the interservice run … but you should not forget about it at all. The first thing that comes to mind as an example is the change of engine oil, with which we started the maintenance table. Here, of course, the frequency is recommended by the plant … however, for some other operations, we chose other terms, which we considered more reasonable. For example, auto giants unanimously recommend changing the elements of air filters in most carburetor models once every 20 thousand. Knowing what state the knot is not even in the desert - in Moscow! - We recommend reducing this period to a standard mileage between maintenance. By the way, this was done on the Samara: the frequency of work is 15 thousand km. In general, when assigning a new term, we made it a multiple of the established MOT - that is, 10 and 15 thousand kilometers (sometimes 5 thousand on the Volga).

Small control operations from the factory service books were dismissed, having decided to combine them in a general inspection of the car. So, we start any MOT with looking around - not fluent, but not too meticulous, this is not the first date! Let small chips and scratches of paint not upset you - this is an everyday matter! Better remember the knock that bothered you on your last summer trip. Then you prudently postponed the diagnosis, and now it's time to pull the wheels, suspension arms, rock the steering wheel, count the clicks of the parking brake … Anything you find, complete the list of works for a specific MOT. Yes, and be sure to check everything is fluid - make sure that there are no drips on the bridges, tanks, hydraulic parts; bring the levels to normal if necessary.

Of course, we believe that your car arrived at the next MOT without major malfunctions - those that should happen during the interservice mileage should be eliminated immediately. Like those "little things" with which the operation of machines is prohibited. Therefore, we resolutely delete from the official instructions operations such as “check the thermostat” and “check the operation of the light alarm” - a normal driver makes them daily and does not pull 10 thousand for repairs!

And now, having finished with general words, we will briefly go through the table. Operation 1.9, which is not included in the VAZ publications, is nevertheless mandatory on all carburetor models - the ignition moment is lost due to wear of the chain, gears, even the timing belt … It is usually enough to correct the angle right on the road - at the beginning of detonation. Do not neglect operations 1.13 and 1.14! The first is often impossible to accomplish without the second, but this should not be done at all for the sake of a piece of paper - a toxicity ticket …

Service books of domestic cars all as one recommend to monitor and adjust the angles of the wheels every 20-30 thousand. Given the quality of roads, we halve the frequency - at least for control. In general, of course, all “adjust” operations can end even at the stage of checking angles, gaps, tension … It’s a pity, but this does not always happen.

And finally, paragraph 4.2 - perhaps at first glance it will seem unnecessary … however, including this is why we included it in the mandatory maintenance. Because after overcoming the impassability, I don’t feel like cleaning the sills and doors… so don’t forget to do important, not too difficult work every 10-15 thousand kilometers!

Obviously, an experienced motorist, let alone a car mechanic, will be able to supplement the list with his “branded” works (especially on the Volga!). Without a doubt that the table can be expanded, we urge you not to reduce it …

Here we briefly talk about the TO-1 - the work that is enough to do in 2-3 thousand and no longer return to them. Firstly, this is the so-called broach (which, incidentally, must also be able to be performed, but this is a separate issue). It is often carried out as part of pre-sale preparation, and then on TO-1 it remains only to tighten the mountings of the cylinder head and camshaft bearings (by the way, despite the absence of this in the Samar service book, it is also useful for them to “tighten” the head - it almost easily stretches every second). In addition to broaching and operations carried out with a 10, 000-mileage run, the new car still needs to change the oil in the transmission and adjust the headlights. It may be necessary to adjust (repair) something else … it is impossible to specify here.

Instead of a conclusion, we propose again returning to the table to make a “comment along the way”. Take a look at the advantages of modern low-maintenance structures - there are more “dozen” interservice runs, fewer operations for ZMZ-4062. Obviously, service books of future cars will greatly lose in volume - we hope, both in terms of maintenance and in the section of warranty repairs …

Is it possible to cover brake hoses and rubber window seals with some special compound to increase the service life?

Aging due to the time and “life” conditions, rubber loses its most important properties - elasticity and strength. The sun's rays are especially harmful to it, to which glass sealers are most affected - they harden and crack faster, the longer the machine is in the sun.
