Chip tuning will not add power to the Volga, but will significantly increase the reliability of injection electronics.


No, we don’t want to say at all that the failures of the Elkar NPP development computer control system (Mikas 5.4 block) on the Volga with the ZMZ-4062.10 engine happen often and all the Volgar urgently need to upgrade the motors. Tuning is a lesson for the soul, the lot of opponents of the motto "the best is the enemy of the good."

Chip tuning compares favorably with conventional simplicity. Replaced the computer that controls the engine or gearbox, or even one pee-ear (ROM - read-only memory) - and the job is done! By the way, if chip tuning increases the nameplate power (as on foreign cars), this means that the serial engine is “clamped”, deformed for the sake of clean exhaust or (and) lower fuel consumption. As a rule, the results of the “upgrade” are noticeable during transient engine operation, while the maximum values ​​of the power parameters remain unchanged.

So on the Volga you can put a different chip, but not for speed, but, as they say, to optimize engine performance. Mikas 5.4 control units have been produced for several years and have been upgraded twice. In short: the current version differs from the first one mainly in its adaptation to the quality of commercial Russian gasoline, which is often very far from GOST requirements. This means that with the latest block (or ROM) release time, the risk of detonation is lower … and, accordingly, you can not worry so much about the health of the engine after another suspicious refueling. Still taken into account some changes in the design of the motor itself associated with the transition to mass production. If for some reason you cannot avoid replacing the control unit and there is a choice, it is better to install a new one, regardless of the engine’s release date. If your unit works without failures … remember the “good” and “best” - the same difference between the chips.

Despite the name, the Volga chip tuning is not limited to just upgrading the program. Sore spot electricians - contacts, connectors, connections. Let's look at the wiring - how can you improve reliability here? The harness, which is put on GAZ, can be replaced entirely - there is an alternative, produced by the same Elkar. Using his example, we will try to independently rid the serial version of some weaknesses (see photo).

There is little left - high voltage lines. At first, for some time on the “406s” they put ceramic candle tips without resistors and blue wires (2 kOhm / m). The interference level was such that sometimes the control units “stumbled”! In addition, the shape of the tips was extremely uncomfortable. Now ZMZ chose a good set of "wire-tip" … but not the best. Elkar and Beru offer their own version (see photo). If you decide to pick up wires, candles, lugs, consider the following: the latter should tightly fit the insulator of the candle, and not just hang on a threaded tail; candles are desirable with noise suppression resistance, for example A17DVR, tips - with a resistance of 5 kOhm, wires - with "zero". In this “configuration”, the conditions of sparking on all candles will be close, and the interference is small.

And finally, you can replace the ignition coil with one, four-pin, for example, "Bosch." But it makes sense when you need 100 percent reliability at very high speeds. The main demand for expensive ignition coils is among athletes or those who consider themselves as such.

We “walked” only on some components of the engine management system. Of course, you can offer to replace other elements in bulk - buy imported sensors, nozzles, etc., by investing a fair amount. Sometimes it really makes sense. But in most cases, what is mentioned above is enough … otherwise the best really becomes the enemy of the good and the reasonable.

The nozzles on the serial harness were rather weak, and when trying to undock, they broke (to the right). The current connector is stronger (in the center), and the best one is in the “tuning” wiring harness (left).
