DEADS IN A QUIET SWEEP

The Nizhny Novgorod company Technoservice has been equipping the Volga with imported power units for several days. Now she undertook to introduce “alien” engines under the hoods of the distant “relatives” of the “Volga” - UAZs.

We have already introduced readers to the Ulyanovsk all-terrain vehicle equipped with the Toyota 3L diesel engine (ZR, 1999, No. 1). This time, the company rolled out to our court not one, but three unique cars. Ordinary UAZ 3151 2-031 (soft roof, axles with wheel gears) was equipped with a domestic engine ZMZ-406 with distributed fuel injection. The long-wheelbase UAZ 3153 was equipped with a four-cylinder “Toyota” gasoline engine 3RZ-FE (2694 cm3, 112 kW / 152 hp), Japanese five-speed manual gearbox and transfer case. And, finally, the new UAZ 3160 had a six-cylinder V-shaped engine Toyota-5VZ-FE (3378 smz, 151 kW / 205 hp).

WHY DOES IT NEED?

The question is quite natural. However, as well as the answer: to give the car new qualities. What kind? First of all, dynamics and speed, secondly - reliability. It's no secret that UAZs cannot be called high-speed, and sudden, unpredictable failures of serial engines are by no means uncommon. We had to evaluate how “non-native” engines would behave.

UAZ with the “406th” engine of the Zavolzhsky plant at first seemed the most ordinary. Its “interior” has already become almost a museum: the steering wheel, the knobs of gearbox levers and “handouts”, a vertically protruding handbrake, like a time machine, return to the era of pioneer ties and morning rulers. The fact that only a few days remained before 2000 was reminded only by the lack of a “suction” shifter and the persistent buzzing of the fuel electric pump. True, it distracts attention until the engine is started - at idle the “406th” will be noisier than the “402nd.”

In the movement "four hundred and sixth" is much more impressive. In first gear, the motor instantly spins up to a speed limiter. On the second - acceleration is almost as fast. Oh, if the gearbox allowed you to shift as fast! But, alas, between frantic jumps, a hefty pause is needed for the malachol synchronizers to do their job (the injection engine is reluctant to slow down). In third gear, the pace is noticeably lost, and in fourth gear the car seems to rest against the wall. There is nothing to be done - the “short” gear ratios of the “military” axles with wheel gears (5.38 versus 4.68 with conventional ones) determine exactly this behavior of the machine.

At the next bend, the motor suddenly died out without warning. Of all the hypotheses, the worst was confirmed - an open timing chain with the ensuing consequences in the form of a serious repair. Therefore, the “theoretical” maximum speed of 137 km / h was not completely confirmed by the experiment, although it seemed quite achievable. It was not possible to measure the elasticity of the motor, of which we apologize to the readers.

The long-base UAZ with the Toyota four-cylinder 3RZ-FE engine turned out to be very frisky. The first “hundred” Ulyanovsk all-terrain vehicle exchanged for 14.3 s (!). Incidentally, the Japanese engine is only 2 liters. with. more powerful than our "406th", and the gear ratio of the main transmission is much less. But here the "Toyota" gearbox and transfer case are almost silent and very clear mechanisms that allow you to fully realize the potential of the engine. There is one more thing - the Japanese motor is 400 cm more than the ZMZ-406 in terms of displacement and its torque is 20% higher. So the result is quite natural. The maximum speed (140 km / h) the car reaches in IV gear. Among the distinguishing features of the engine are balancing shafts and a very low level of noise and vibration. Even in a car without any noise isolation, it can hardly be heard at idle, and with intensive acceleration, the UAZ exhaust system mainly sounds. But at maximum speed the whistle of dissected air and the hum of the transmission exceed all reasonable limits.

And finally, the UAZ 3160 with the Six. “Hundred” from standstill in 13.2 s, “maximum speed” - about 153 km / h. The record figure is 167 km / h in the wind. Honestly, this is worse than the expected results for the 205-horsepower engine. Probably, the car simply “does not fall” into the gears: the fourth is too “short” for maximum speed, the fifth is “long”. As a result, the car is very sensitive to any change in resistance to movement in fifth gear at speeds above 140 km / h. But the elasticity of the motor is impressive - in fifth gear you can move from 40 km / h and at the same time confidently accelerate.

Acceleration of the car could be even better - annoying little things interfere. It’s almost impossible to feel the very light clutch pedal, and the gas pedal is too short. Quickly moving on the verge of slipping is like disassembling a grenade in mittens: an error is imminent. In addition, the lack of stiffness of the rear springs when the wheels slip on the asphalt leads to severe vibration of the rear axle, so a powerful motor must be handled more than carefully.

WHAT IS THE RESULT?

If someone told me that UAZs can drive at such a speed, I would not believe him. And yet we will not simplify anything. Powerful engines revealed a mismatch between the chassis of cars, their steering and brakes to the dynamic qualities that they acquire with the installation of new engines. When driving at speeds close to maximum, the dynamic corridor is unacceptably wide, it is difficult to keep the car on a straight line. The power of the Borisov plant only worsens the situation, depriving the driver of even scanty feedback. It's better not to talk about brakes. Even the disc front on the "3160th" is not able to radically correct the situation. At the limit, and domestic tires K-153: their estimated maximum speed of 160 km / h, but they are very much warmed already at a lower. It is obvious that all cars in the "implantation" of alien, more powerful engines need serious refinement of the chassis.

Meanwhile, there is interest in them, let it not seem surprising, quite robust. It is no secret that with active off-road driving, body damage is almost inevitable. So if you have an imported all-terrain vehicle, repairing it will cost a pretty penny. And the price of the modified UAZ is much lower than that of foreign competitors. So, the installation of a four-cylinder 3RZ-FE with a gearbox and a “razdatka” on an UAZ will add $ 86, 500 to its price, a six-cylinder 5VZ-FE - $ 12, 500. A car with a ZMZ-406 will cost about 10, 000 rubles more than the base one. There is something to compare, something to think about.
