After the test of the Ulyanovsk all-terrain vehicles (ZR, 1998, No. 12), the impression of a large unrealized potential of the machine remained. It seems that this is not only our opinion. Many tuning companies bring to mind the domestic SUV. We present two options for finalizing UAZs and two different approaches to the task - Technoservice and Universal 2000 companies. Figuratively speaking, in the first case, the car underwent a heart transplant, and in the second, plastic surgery.

In addition to the poor build quality of the UAZs, the complaints are mainly caused by their outdated, voracious carburetor engine. And if the owners somehow cope with the first misfortune, then they have to put up with the second. But today the vast majority of "real" all-terrain vehicles, which include UAZ, are equipped with diesel power units. So what was the matter? What is not yet within the power of a large plant, the tuning company Technoservice from Nizhny Novgorod was able to do.

In the spacious engine compartment of the all-terrain vehicle, the “Toyota” 2.8-liter atmospheric 3L diesel from the light truck Dina fits perfectly. In terms of maximum power and torque, it is not much different from the Oise engines, so it is fully compatible with the standard transmission. Alteration will cost the owner $ 5, 000. The main advantages of the “implant” are efficiency (average fuel consumption - less than 10 l / 100 km), reliability and “tractor” traction at low speeds. At the same time, the front axle is subjected to minor refinement: the longitudinal angle of the kingpin increased by 4 °, which added stability to the car.

Those who are not satisfied with the clarity of shifting the “native” gearbox and the noise of the spur “handout” can order a deeper upgrade: installing a “handout” and an automatic or mechanical gearbox from Toyota-4-Runner. Together with the installation, this will cost, respectively, $ 2, 000 or $ 1, 000. Although the transfer case will be located lower than the standard, from it to the ground at least 300 mm. But the angles in the articulated joints of the cardan shafts will decrease, which will reduce the load on the transmission.

It was such a machine - with the Toyota motor and mechanics - that went to our test. It also installed Koni shock absorbers ($ 220), a Borisov factory power steering ($ 700), a new battery ($ 97), an electric winch ($ 1, 500), a sunroof ($ 198), and alloy wheels with Bridgestone-Deweller tires. -245 / 75R16”($ 1800), soundproofing ($ 800) and heated exterior mirrors ($ 60).

The modified UAZ on the move significantly differs from the standard one primarily with sound accompaniment - you can hear mainly the characteristic diesel rumble, although it is not intrusive. The second difference - clear, like a passenger, moves of the gear lever. The third difference has already been mentioned - good traction at low speeds and high elasticity of the motor. The margin of time makes itself felt, for example, in loose sand. At the same time, it will not work out especially on hard ground - ninety “horses” are clearly not enough for an impromptu “Dakar”.

UAZ on the asphalt looks more like itself: “goat”, although to a lesser extent, requires steering on uneven surfaces, while braking it tries to rebuild in the next row. Yes, you can "tune" a car for a long time … However, it turned out to be a reliable "professional" hard-working all-terrain vehicle, more likely to be an off-road vehicle than capable of driving, albeit without unnecessary muscle play, in almost any "direction".

Instead of a bunch of three levers, there are only two - gearboxes and “handouts”.

You can get rid of such a misfortune - diagonal hanging - by installing cam inter-wheel differentials, which cost ridiculous money in the Lower - 300 rubles!

The front suspension is spring-loaded, without anti-roll bar. A little lower is the cross member of the transfer case.

Everyone knows that UAZ does not differ in special comfort. The small company Universal 2000 from Ulyanovsk was able to increase the comfort of factory products. What distinguishes a sparkling dark green "metallic" car from a conveyor counterpart?

Firstly, the quality of the paint: the paint of the German company “Spies Hecker” will delight the owner with its brilliance for more than one year. Secondly, looks. Plastic hinged panels on the front panel, bumpers, fenders, sills and the lower part of the doors are not just decoration, but protection against abrasive paint damage. Of course, all this is fixed with plastic caps that do not cause corrosion. External handles and door locks were borrowed from KamAZ (1, 500 p.): They are stronger than standard plastic ones and have more reliable locks. And, of course, the luxurious chrome wheels of American Racing with wide radial tires measuring 235 / 75R15 ($ 1000).

And what's in the cabin? A plastic overlay on the instrument panel with a place for a radio and a “glove compartment”, completely covered with plastic to the very bottom of the door, soft black upholstery of the ceiling with noise insulation (1200 rubles), a “Zhiguli” stove. On the floor under the “sandwich” rug there is painted steel sheet on top, and between it and the real floor there is polypropylene sound and heat insulating filler (650 rubles). The removable upper parts of the doors are welded to the lower ones. This, of course, worsens the "ventilation" of the cabin, but it is necessary to increase the stiffness of the door and the tight fit of the seals. To reduce the heat of the sun, regular glass was replaced with tinted windows (1800 p.).

Now behind the wheel. The cabin is quiet, virtually no vibration. At a speed of 90–100 km / h you can listen to the radio. This is a merit not only of sound insulation, but also of the new three-point engine mount - more elastic than the old (1800 p.). The power steering (7000 r.) Will help to get out of the alley lined with cars. The car is not particularly dynamic - perhaps this is the “fault” of the lower gear ratios of the main pairs (4.11 instead of 4.62; their cost, along with self-locking differentials of 1, 500 rubles).

Standard springs remained in the front and rear suspension, but the car is unusually smooth on the go: seams, joints, bumps do not disturb passengers. Fluoroplastic liners, reducing friction between sheets (600 p.), And more effective “Koni” adjustable shock absorbers ($ 550) helped. The UAZ got rid of the characteristic "kid", but there was a noticeable lateral buildup, so there is still something to "conjure" in the suspension.

You can connect the front wheels on the go, since there are no clutches at all - the front driveshaft and half shafts rotate constantly. Specialists at Universal 2000 believe that this solution improves the reliability of the transmission: the crosses do not like prolonged inactivity, and the new clutches with external engagement have proved themselves to be not the best. Soft suspension is not conducive to fast off-road driving. But diagonal hanging the car is no longer scary: self-locking differentials in the front and rear axles know their job.

Did you manage to create a kind of Mitsubishi-Pajero from an UAZ? Most likely not, but the cost of cars is not comparable either. This car is just a well-assembled UAZ, in which they managed to significantly improve comfort and eliminate some of the shortcomings. A thousand-kilometer drive on such a car is no longer worth the medal “For Labor Valor”.
