WHERE DO CRIMEAN DEER RIDE?

A small service station with two lifts and one viewing hole has made an amazing career and is now claiming second place in the automotive industry of Ukraine.

HAPPENING HAPPINESS …

The origins of KrymavtoGAZservice were Anatoly Lazarev, formerly the director of the auto fleet, which had more than a thousand Gorky trucks. At GAZ Lazarev they knew and supported. The service has been successfully developed; it has received the “adult” status of a techno-commercial center. This gave the right to sell cars and spare parts - a luxurious privilege for the late 80's!

In the beginning of the 90s, two ways opened before the Crimean company, which was losing the breadwinner,: again to become a modest service station or humbly ask for dealers from foreigners. She went third, atypical for a country where there is nothing more permanent than a crisis - she took up production.

Today, a lot of Ukrainian enterprises work on the 12-post conveyor of the gazelle assembly shop in Simferopol. They send batteries, tires, springs, cardan shafts … The requirement for suppliers is simple: the price is lower than the Russian one with proper quality. But this is not only why the Crimean Gazelle is cheaper than those imported from Russia: savings in transportation and overhead costs, in customs clearance. With it, onboard, and began the Simferopol Automobile Assembly Plant. Clearly, the poorer the market, the greater the share of the cheapest modification; in Ukraine, 86% of all gazelles are on-board. This figure led to the conclusion: there is no need to expand the range! But the Crimeans interpreted it the other way around: the market is saturated with airborne and, therefore, demand for them will inevitably fall. Today they are assembling 13 modifications of the Gazelle with a gas engine - from a minibus and ambulance to a hearse (and soon there will be the 14th all-wheel drive to extinguish forest fires ordered by the Ministry of Emergencies of Ukraine). At the request of the buyer, they are ready to equip each of them with a diesel engine. The “Steyr” in Simferopol was preferred by the 103-horsepower 2.5-liter IVECO with a turbocharger - the same one which in Kremenchug was considered the unkilled trump card of the “Turbo Daily” truck assembled at the IVECO-KrAZ joint venture and three times more expensive …

Turbodiesel revived the sale of gazelles, but not for long: all for as much as 4, 200 cu more expensive than the "native", gasoline. Simferopol residents decided to buy these engines not in Italy, but in Zaporozhye, where the Motor Sich plant mastered their production (ЗР, 1998, No. 3). MACHINE FOR THE NECKLESS

For reference: “KrymavtoGAZservice” is now - JSC. 80% of its shares belong to the labor collective, 20% - to GAZ OJSC. The long name will soon be shortened - KrymavtoGAZ will remain.

Frankly, at first I did not take this name seriously. Then the doubts disappeared. Firstly, the assembly is not "screwdriver": the "Gazelle" is mounted here using gas technology from about 800 nodes and assemblies. I was also impressed by the volume of production (7 thousand cars a year when working in one shift), but most of all - that it is the only manufacturer in Ukraine that produces both trucks and cars. Yes, and cars too! In 1997, a small assembly line for the Volga assembly was launched in the new workshop. At KrymavtoGAZ (it's time to call it that), the skeptics were overwhelmed by collecting and selling in the first year more than two thousand GAZ 3110 and GAZ 3102.

But what about the quality? The Crimean Volga’s is higher than the one assembled in Nizhny, which, according to Lazarev, is also recognized by the president of GAZ OJSC. Indeed, in a small enterprise, where there is no particular rush, you can control every operation.

Those who are not satisfied with the standard ZMZ-402 engine are offered a choice of four imported ones: a gasoline “Rover” and three “Toyota” ones, one of which is a 2.5-liter turbodiesel.

Seventy percent of the Crimean Volga is bought by legal entities. The director of the enterprise, where the team has not received a salary for months - and only 90% of them are in the Crimea - is now unlikely to risk buying an official Mercedes. Our unforgettable people do not perceive the “Volga” as “class alien”. Even the "luxury" from the tuning shop …

TURKISH COAST AND AFRICA

KrymavtoGAZ is like a deer with a company emblem galloping on a steep scree in the mountains. The stone leaves from under the feet - and he is already in a new leap. Lazarev agreed with this analogy:

- When our next project begins to exhaust itself, we make a jump and save ourselves from falling into the abyss …

Where will the Crimean deer jump further?

“We want to capture the Ukrainian taxi market market,” the general director admitted. “We are ready to give them the Volga taxis at zero cost, but they will continue to buy cars and spare parts from us, not from Daewoo.”

Another support outlined by the Crimeans is the Sobol Gazovsky.

- We will release it from May 1999. Already begun to build a workshop.

Sobol has an important advantage that opens the way for him across the sea. KrymavtoGAZ’s Istanbul partner wanted to import gazelles and sell them in Turkey and North Africa. But the hassle in the Turkish Customs Code prevented the contract: if the car has dual wheels, the import duty is much higher. But this is not the case with Sable, unlike the Gazelle.

I called only a few “supporting stones” that allow KrymavtoGAZ to survive and even go up the slope. In 1999, he intends to assemble 10 thousand cars, in 2000 - up to 25 thousand. According to the forecast, a modest automaker with fewer than two hundred engineers and workers will yield only AvtoZAZ-Daewoo in Ukraine in this key indicator.

Of course, without the constant support of GAZ, Crimeans would have been much harder. Production organizers, take a look at the possibilities of the giant-baby tandem with this example! The benefits of the "baby" are obvious. But the giant is the winner: it expands its sales, can freely conduct experiments with small series, and at the same time acts in the noble role of "big brother". And also, no less important, the “baby” helps to solve some of the giant’s problems in its region. Thus, KrymavtoGAZ regularly buys metal for bodies (up to 5 thousand tons per month) from Zaporizhstal for the proceeds from the sale of automobiles and ensures its delivery to Nizhny Novgorod.

“In unity - power” - the slogan on the territory of the car assembly says. And although my generation was accustomed to gliding through banners with an indifferent look, then I suddenly thought: what do the owners mean? The unity of the workforce? Simferopol and Gorky factories? Ukraine and Russia? Probably all this together …
