The current 145–146 family is extremely successful in fighting for a place in the sun in its automotive market sector. Trumps "Alpha" - the dynamics of a car with a gamut of "combat" engines, and the look that does not leave indifferent true lovers of this brand. But no matter how good things are, today you have to think about the upcoming shift …

The new 145th, of course, does not yet have an official index, but something is already known about it. Like the previous Alpha, the platform for it will be FIAT-Bravo / Brava (or Lancha Dedra / Delta), which, in turn, were based on Tipo units. Suspension will be slightly reworked: their geometry will allow a more compact placement of the motor, both across and along the (opposed) car.

The range of engines of the next model is no longer a secret: three gasoline engines of 1.6, 1.8 and 2.0 liters develop from 120 to 155 liters. with. and a 1.9-liter diesel engine (105 hp). It is also planned to install the famous two-liter supercharged engine with a capacity of 205 liters. with. - Today it can be seen on the GTV model.

Particular controversy erupted around the layout of the body. The company management considered that it was irrational to produce two almost independent models (like the 145th and 146th). And, it seems, while those who are fighting for a five-door body based on the 145th (universal hatchback) are gaining the upper hand, offering to remove the half-sedan from the program. Thus, fans of the 145th will be able to choose between three- and five-door versions of the same body.

In the exterior of the novelty of the revolution is not expected. A very strong influence on her will have the style of "Car of 1998" - "Alfa Romeo-156" - a sort of a very successful alloy of "Alpha" specificity and modern plastic. Again, a large emblem, a characteristic punching on the hood, original block headlights and, of course, a rapid wedge-shaped silhouette. It may seem that the brand “aggression” has disappeared in the guise, but such are the current trends and hardly anyone wants to go against them.

Inside, in addition to increasing comfort, the changes will affect mainly additional equipment. The standard equipment will include an integrated navigation system, a radiotelephone, four side airbags, tinted windows.

In general, the car will be more modern, but will it become "Car of the Year"? To answer this question, you have to wait a bit, because the premiere of the new 145th is planned for the fall of 1999, on the eve of the change of centuries.

Predecessors

Having acquired a controlling stake in Alfa Romeo in November 1986, FIAT acted as a wise politician - he left the company exactly as much independence as it was able to carry through automobile markets.

By that time, Alfa Romeo had long had a clearly defined circle of customers who liked the sporty driving style, the loud exhaust sound, the engine “choking” when re-gasing, and much more, which made passersby look back … The company produced a lot of similar cars, but we will focus on the immediate "ancestors" of the one we are talking about today.

Alfa Romeo Alfacud appeared in 1971. The debut took place at the Turin Motor Show, and, as was often the case with new models of the company, it violated the balance that had developed by then in this sector of the market. A pretty five-door hatchback with ultra-modern then rectangular headlights, front-wheel drive, a four-cylinder boxer engine attracted many fans. Suffice it to say that over the course of a number of years, sales grew and grew, and Alfasyud's share in the production program of the company reached 60%.

The popularity of the car was also facilitated by the appearance of its modifications. The three-door "Jardinietta" has further expanded the circle of customers, "capturing" small families and young housewives. Her concept was really not quite ordinary: the body type seemed to be familiar, and front-wheel drive is not a novelty, but Alpha specialists were able to “informally” put all the components into their own, only he knows order and thereby win new adherents. An active pricing policy also played an important role: dealers were attracted by low, lower than any classmates, selling prices.

The Sprint coupe, which debuted in September 1976, simply shocked competitors for a while, because it had no equal at that time.

But the years took their toll, and after 12 years of successful sales in 1983, Alfasyud left the automobile "scene", giving way to model 33. True, Sprint continued to produce for several more years.

Prior to the development of the “thirty-third”, the basic requirements for the new model were formulated. The main ones: sharply increase manufacturability, reduce weight, improve aerodynamic qualities and comfort.

To solve the first problem, a major modernization of the Pomigliano D'Arco plant was carried out. Only on the body welding line were installed 40 robots that reduced the share of manual labor in this process to 20% (67% from the previous model).

Specialists of the famous Pininfarina worked on the new body style. The appearance of the car for that time could be called “almost avant-garde” - somewhat angular, deliberately emphasized by dividing the horizontal line to the top-bottom, the front direction indicators for a long time becoming branded, the very characteristic scrapping on the rear pillar, which at first caused a lot of controversy - all this determined the appearance 33rd. She had an abundance of visible dynamics: like a beast before a jump. At the same time, the Cx was 0.36, which was not bad for a four-door sedan. But, despite the obvious successes of designers and constructors, the “thirty-third” of such popularity as its predecessor could not achieve.

Since that time (1986), when Alpha lost its independence, FIAT specialists joined in the design of sports cars. All-wheel drive options appeared, the station wagon and it became obvious that the days of the 33rd were numbered. Everyone was looking forward to her replacement.

With the advent of the new "owner", it became possible to unify the technical platforms of cars of different brands of the Fiat concern. It was the 33rd Alfa Romeo-145 that replaced it (its debut took place in the summer of 1994) and proved that fundamentally different cars can be created on the same platform, both in character and in appearance. 145th is based on the same components and assemblies as FIAT-Bravo / Brava, the production of which began … in a year. Over the appearance of "one hundred and forty-fifth, " the FIAT specialists, Alfa-Romeo herself and the IDEA design bureau worked. The result was not quite an ordinary car. In appearance, it can be formally considered a three-door station wagon (not a hatchback - the rear wall is too vertical), but the narrow side rear window very much resembles conceptual single-compartment windows … I would just like to note that almost everything new is well forgotten old. Take a look at the photo of “Jardinetta” - the connection of times and concepts is clearly traced.

Following the 145th in the digital series, the number 146 should go … So it happened. Alfa Romeo-146 appeared - a compact class car that joined the team of "little athletes". This is exactly the case when the base body acquired the right to exist later than its version. In the vast majority of new families (especially in past years) they always started with a four-door sedan. In this case, everything is different: apparently the 146th model is, of course, a sedan, but the trunk lid opens with the rear window, like a hatchback, and there is also a shelf in the luggage compartment … So try to figure it out! The overall style, of course, corporate. A large emblem, squinted predatory eyes, a low landing (in fact, the driver’s landing is not so sporty), in general, is quite a typical appearance for Alfa Romeo. True, the wheels are small.

Many famous bodybuilders, stylists, designers conjured over bodies of different models of the company, but the general style of Alpha can be preserved in a completely unknown way, despite any currents and directions.
