In Russia, Mitsubishi Karizma was first officially shown at the Moscow International Auto Show in August last year - only two and a half years after the world premiere. The car is available in trim levels EL, GL, GLX, GLS and MSX with sedan and five-door hatchback bodies. It is equipped with 1.6- and 1.8-liter gasoline engines, including those with direct injection of fuel into the cylinders, and a 1.9-liter turbodiesel. Equipped with a five-speed manual or four-speed automatic transmission. Domestic dealers offer so far only the least powerful gasoline modifications with conventional distributed injection in the price range of 20–26 thousand dollars.

Mitsubishi Karisma, as well as the Volvo S40 / V40 based on the same platform, is produced at one of the most modern NedCar plants in Born (Holland) in the amount of 100 thousand cars a year. At the same time, only 15% of production costs are for gasoline engine assembly kits and automatic transmissions imported from Japan. And this means that “Karisma” is a full-fledged product of the European Union, not subject to 10 percent customs duty. Incidentally, in accordance with the so-called G-plan, by 2000 in Europe 300 thousand Mitsubishi are supposed to be sold annually, which will make up about 2% of the continent’s automobile market.

OBJECTIVE FACTS

The creations of Japanese designers are usually not distinguished by liberty of style and a riot of fantasy. Their crown is technological know-how and the highest quality. Such is “Karisma”, under whose discreet appearance lies a carefully designed design and advanced solutions.

Aerodynamics of the car were calculated on the most powerful supercomputer “Cray” and brought to the aerospace division of the corporation. As a result, the drag coefficient Cx was brought to 0.29. For comparison: the “Renault Lagoon” and “Peugeot 406” it is 0.3, while the “Toyota-Karina E” and “Ford-Mondeo” - 0.31. The creators of the model worked no less carefully to reduce the level of internal noise: 66.5 decibels at 100 km / h - one of the best indicators in the class.

For “Karisma” a multi-link rear suspension “Multilink” with the effect of passive taxiing and an adaptive automatic gearbox INVEX-II (INVECS-II), which selects a gear not only depending on the value of resistance to movement and engine speed, are developed, as usual “automatic machines”, but also from the slope of the road, the angle of rotation of the steering wheel, the position of the gas and brake pedals, and even from the individual driving style of the one who is driving. Previously, much more expensive cars were equipped with such systems, and even then infrequently.

But until recently, there was no direct injection of gasoline into cylinders and no one else, if we talk about serial production. Here, Mitsubishi is the undisputed leader and is confidently ahead of its closest competitors. In the fall of 1997, “karisma” began to roll off the NedKar conveyor with the new GDI engines (GDI - Gasoline Direct Ingection), and from the summer of this year they will also be delivered to Russia. By 2010, the corporation plans to completely switch to a new type of engine.

What gives direct injection into the cylinders? First of all, the ability of the engine to work on a very poor mixture, which means greater efficiency and lower levels of harmful substances in exhaust gases. By the way, in an advertising run with a length of about 6 thousand km, the “karizm” with JI engines at an average speed of 90 km / h showed a record low fuel consumption - 4.83 liters per 100 km!

Cars delivered to Russia will feature a more powerful alternator, starter and battery, as well as increased ground clearance by 15 mm. Additional anti-corrosion treatment is not provided, moreover, a ten-year guarantee against corrosion is maintained. This is largely due to the fact that 70% of the body parts are made of galvanized steel.

Buyers of foreign cars with us inexplicably neglect passive safety features, stubbornly avoiding such "excesses" as airbags. Well, perhaps, “this” will not really happen to them, but so far out of the eight modifications offered by dealers, only two are equipped with pillows. Otherwise, everything is according to the standards of the company: power bars in the doors protect from the consequences of a side impact, to reduce the risk of a fire when capsizing, a special valve cuts off the fuel supply. For cars sold in Russia, a general one-year warranty is given without mileage limitation.

SUBJECTIVE FEELINGS

And now we’ll come closer to Karisma and evaluate it from the perspective of a potential buyer.

Sedan and hatchback are very similar in appearance, their overall dimensions are the same, but the boot capacity of the first is 30 liters more. The rear seat back is folded in both versions, however, in a hatchback (however, in some sedans) this can be done in parts, in a proportion of 40:60. The large fifth door, convenient for loading and unloading luggage, has in this case one single drawback - from the driver's seat, the high rear edge of the trunk is absolutely not visible. In the sedan, you can still see it by stretching its neck. Under the luggage compartment floor - a full-size spare tire - this is our way!

And what's down below, under the car? Plastic wheel arch liners, the same plastic screen and a wide steel ski under the engine compartment - excellent.

Let's move on to the salon. Yeah! The seal of the doorways is double at the bottom and triple (!) At the top. Here, probably, not far to a record low level of internal noise. Of the headgear, the driver of “Karizma” will most of all take a beret or a sports cap without a pompom. Hats, caps and even caps that rise above the crown by more than a couple of centimeters will not miss the jealous front desk without interference. The cloakroom of the rear passengers is contraindicated in tails and long floors. However, back in the bikini you need to sit skillfully - the "fifth point" forward. The reason for this is the wheel arch protruding strongly in the doorway.

Inside, the “serious” thickness of the back of the front seats with developed lateral support immediately attracts attention. The impression that they got here by mistake from some spacious limousine. Nevertheless, five men of average physique have enough space here. The rear windows are cleaned almost completely at the door, but the hard plastic handles of the power windows were right at the knee. It is interesting that the resistance force, at which the power windows turn off, is significantly lower at the rear - after all, it is there that children often travel. On "Karisma" there is a central locking of door locks. And it’s good to “manually” pull out the door locking buttons tapering upwards - this is not an easy task. Inside, a lot of drawers and pockets, convenient to accommodate all the little things.

The driver's seat is equipped with an impressive amount of adjustments, including changing the height and angle of the seat cushion. True, the range of steering wheel height adjustment is not entirely optimal: in its highest position, it almost lies on the lap of an average driver. The pedals are conveniently located, but there is no special emphasis for the left foot. Quite far back, the parking brake lever “left”. The manual gearbox moves are short and crisp. The functions of the steering column switches are quite familiar, but when you turn on the windshield washer, the wipers do not automatically work. On a long journey, it’s convenient to put your hand on the door armrest imposingly. And one more thing: the ventilation system with a dust filter allows you to regulate the flow of cold air through the central deflectors when … the heater is on.

"Carism" is obedient and pleasant to drive. The view from the driver's seat is not bad, but the front edge of the hood is hidden behind the wiper blades. The cunning suspension, rather soft in normal modes, in tight corners provides increased stiffness, allowing you to clearly “prescribe” the trajectory. Switching the “machine” by ear is impossible to catch, so smoothly they occur. And the engine does not annoy too much noise. Perhaps the loudest sounds are tires. As a standard equipment, “Karisma" would not be inhibited by a puller of static electricity - she likes to say goodbye slightly to “caress” the owner with a light current shock.

So, Russian buyers got another modern car - not cheap, although worth the money, not without some drawbacks (there are no perfect cars), but with many advantages - this is indisputable. What sets Karisma apart is the advanced technical solutions with which it’s not a shame to “enter” the 21st century.

Mitsubishi Karisma is one of the most compact and dynamic cars in the first middle class (Modium-I), which also has a very moderate price for this class. Only the most powerful Korean Hyundai-Lantra sells cheaper, but its inexpressive appearance has not earned a large number of fans, and the Skoda Octavia, which attracts with a combination of almost German quality and Czech price. The strongest position in the class is undeniably in the Volkswagen Passat, which offers the maximum "number of cars", and without any reservations, real German quality, for more than a reasonable price. But there is one “but” - the official supply quota has long been selected and orders are accepted almost a year in advance. You can buy it from “gray” Passat dealers even today, after overpaying $ 7-8 thousand. FIAT-Marea, Nissan Primera and Ford Mondeo are more expensive, but not so much that the price difference becomes a decisive argument. "Opel Vectra" will please a wide selection of options for configurations, but even in the basic versions, it is $ 4-5 thousand more expensive than "Karisma". But the buyer of Audi A4 will have to overpay for the image. And pretty much.
