OUR ACQUAINTANCE

SAMARA OF THE FINISH SPILL

When, when will they start selling Eurosamaru in Russia? They asked us.

And now …

Our readers have heard about Samara-Valmet being assembled in Finland. At one time (ЗР, 1996, No. 12), we tested this car in the GL configuration, which was as different as possible from the basic “nine”. Today, in connection with the start of the long-awaited sale of Euro-Samara in Russia, we have the opportunity to get to know it in the L configuration, which is outwardly almost indistinguishable from a VAZ car.

To begin with, the price from $ 8500 to $ 9000 for an “almost” foreign car looks “almost” tempting. But what will the buyer get after all, having paid nearly fifteen hundred dollars if he chooses the “euro”, and not the standard Togliatti “nine”.

Euro-Samar bodies are welded, primed, painted and treated with anticorrosive materials in Finland. In theory, everything should be "tip-top" here. Indeed, the painting is of excellent quality, without shagreen, and you will not see rough seams at the joints of the racks and the roof - they simply do not exist. However, the gaps between body parts are not the same everywhere. And their planes do not always coincide - say, the hood on our Finnish guest is significantly lower than the upper edge of the wings.

What else is noteworthy for an external acquaintance? A new emblem on the radiator lining, Michelin tires MXT 165 / 70R13 (however, Nokia can also stand), plastic caps on wheels, lockers in the front niches mounted on plastic pistons, and not on self-tapping screws. Not a lot, but, you see, everything is “on business”. Bumpers, headlights and lights remained unchanged.

Take a look under the hood. Here is the usual carburetor one and a half liter power unit, but a lot of changes. Transmission - “decimal” with oil dipstick. You cannot see the Saks clutch disc from the outside, but, nevertheless, it found a place of residence here, although the “basket” and release bearing remained VAZ. It should be noted that the battery, the wiper motor-reducer, the brush leashes and the brushes themselves, as well as the cooling fan were replaced with the Boshevsky ones. Last in operation sound when turned on, it resembles a turbocharger unit. Most of the tape clamps on the pipelines are replaced by worm "Normovye". In addition, the "mass" is now fed not through one bus, but through two wires: the thinner one is attached to the body at the bottom of the mudguard, the thick one is connected directly to the starter. Along the way, we note that the suspension struts, although standard, are “Skopinski,” but the quality control is Finnish.

Now we go around the car and open the trunk. There is no “bare metal here, the wheel arches are covered with plastic claddings, under which noise insulation is hidden. Carpet, with a rigid base, flooring is made separately from the backrest trim. On the rear side, between the lamp housings there is a plastic cover under which the jack, pump and tools are located. Not bad at all!

So we got to the salon. Here the innovations are most noticeable. Let's start with the inner door trim: fabric inserts appeared, a place for installing speakers, handles gained a more modern curved shape. Inside the doors, like most modern cars, safety bars are installed. Incidentally, the casing-fastening pistons “hold on” to special plastic sockets in the door - this is much more reliable than on a standard VAZ car. The other form of steel was the internal glass seals, and the door is now solid, without a constantly "siphoning" cut in the lower part. In the front struts and doors there were holes muffled by pistons for the wiring of speakers, windows and lock actuators. A small touch: the limiter rod now rests not just on the rack, but on the plastic plate.

The front panel, covered from above by a pretty, smoothly curved "fly-hood", looks completely different. The right rear-view mirror has become full-time and gained mechanical adjustment from the passenger compartment.

The steering wheel - three-spoke, sheathed with material under the skin, with a safety hub - looks almost like a sports one. The seats “built” on the standard frame have also changed. They became more comfortable, with a wide back and developed lateral support. The solid back has ceased to look like a flat rigid bench and has gained thanks to the head restraints a pronounced "two-seater". However, the width of the cabin has not changed, so for three there is enough space. The carpet on the floor is longer. It covers the metal of the body under the rear seat, and in addition, differs from the standard material of higher quality.

It would be absurd to say that Samara has now become completely different on the road. It’s just that if a VAZ car can initially behave differently - from “bad” to “excellent”, then at “Valmetovskaya” this range is narrowed to “good” - “excellent”. And besides, the cabin has become quieter and, of course, more comfortable. We already mentioned that the seats are more comfortable, the steering wheel is much better, and the overlay on the panel caresses the look. The changes are not so radical, but in the complex they give the feeling that you are driving a more modern car.

Well, to summarize some of the results. We, brought up on the products of the domestic automobile industry, are well aware that bringing the “native” models to the mind is almost an endless process. "Nine" in this sense, the object is the most blessed. She doesn’t need so much to “look” and be “on the level” (or almost “on the level”). Now estimate how much time, effort and money these alterations will cost, paid separately. Metallic paint alone and imported rubber will cost $ 500 that way. But you don’t need all these “beauties”, you are a pragmatist. But what about the reliability of imported components, higher quality assembly and painting, comfort, passive safety in the end? This is not just a plastic “body kit in a circle” that can be installed in a dozen workshops. So if you intend to drive a domestic car with European quality, maybe it makes sense to fork out for Euro-Samara? But everyone already decides for himself.

The editors thank Foxhol for the car provided for acquaintance.

A sports steering wheel and a new instrument panel with a built-in electronic clock distinguish Euro-Samara from the VAZ one.

Upholstery of the front door - a new handle and pocket for "small things".

The floor mat is now fully removable.

The first thing that catches your eye in the engine compartment is the Bosch battery.

The cooling system hoses are secured with Norma clamps.

Wiper leashes and Bosch brushes.
