ACCENT - FOR SPEAKERS

Hyundai Accent is already well known in our market and one would doubt the necessity of testing it by the magazine if it weren’t for one circumstance - sharply intensified competition in the car sales sector worth 10-15 thousand dollars. Skoda, Ford, FIAT, Renault, Daewoo, KIA, etc. - Everyone started developing a promising "vein" - the category of buyers is not very rich, but already able to pay a little more than for the usual VAZ.

Sergey RADOVSKY, Dmitry LAZO, Vladimir YAKOVLEV

For testing, we got a three-door "Accent" with a 1.5-liter 12-valve engine, but without "bells and whistles", costing "only" $ 14, 600. This price includes a power steering and a stereo system. A comparison of prices for additional equipment shows that Accent has fallen by about $ 1, 300 over the year - the results of increased competition are evident.

The Hyundai Accent, which appeared in 1994, can be called an "interclass car." In length (4103 mm) it fits into the framework of the European first middle class (C), but in terms of base (2400) and overall width (1620) it most likely corresponds to the European small class (B). In Europe, he competes with FIAT-Punto and Volkswagen Polo, and not with the larger FIAT-Bravo and Volkswagen Golf. However, in Russia, where they are accustomed to relatively narrow VAZ models, the Accent is quite comparable to them - domestic class C cars.

For editorial tests, Hyundai Accent was provided by the official dealer of the brand - the company "Chance".

The differences in the appearance of the three-door car and its four- and five-door modifications are significant, although they are not immediately apparent. The three-door has its own front design with a more pronounced air intake spoiler and a different “eye cut”. The rear pillar also looks completely different, and the spoiler on the roof of the trunk (only the three-door has it) organically continues the waist line of the body - a rare example of improving the appearance of an additional “hitch”. If the four- and five-door “Accent” is a kind of standard “remnant” design, devoid of a distinctive look, then the three-door here clearly wins, resembling a compact sports coupe. This image is spoiled only by simple stamped wheels with up-to-date narrow tires. At the same time, the cutouts of the wheel arches look too large.

The interior is simply and modestly decorated, but its decoration is pleasant, creating coziness. The fit of the elements is impeccable, and the hard plastic used for the main panels due to the texture seems soft, fully justifying the term “soft look” (looking soft).

Elements of the interior do not create any irregularities in the covering of extraneous noise, but on the cobblestone bridge saloon “sang” with the voices of several panels. Doors close nicely - easily, without hard banging.

In the tested "Accent" "Spartan" build - unpretentious-looking seats, with only two adjustments. But when you sit down, you recall the words from the commercial: "… so good that I don’t want anything." To steering column switches there is only one complaint: to free the “turn signals” lever from the light control function.

Now look around. Front struts almost do not interfere with the review. The shape of the hood allows you to not lose the feeling of overall dimensions, and the rear spoiler almost coincides with the edge of the stern. As for the mirrors, I had to be surprised. There is only one outer mirror, and it is adjustable when you press your hand on its edges! You will meet such poor equipment today except at the very first "Lada".

It’s easy to get started, although the factory clutch adjustment with a large free wheeling may be to some and not like. Throughout the entire operating speed range, Accent accelerates perfectly, eagerly responding to gas. The elasticity is excellent: in fifth gear, acceleration can start from 40 km / h. This is the merit of the 1.5-liter “injection” “four” with three valves per cylinder and successful transmission ratios. Against the backdrop of such analogues as the Skoda Felicia and VAZ 2108, the tried and tested Accent looks just fine.

The appearance of the “Korean” is by no means deceptive - it is well adapted to a very lively driving style and pretty soon “turns you on”, immediately showing that it is not inclined to large body rolls or excessive desire for understeer on the serpentine. Smooth demolition of the front wheels appears only at high speeds. It reacts very sluggishly to the gas discharge, agreeing to turn inward the turn when braking the engine only at the limit of tire adhesion.

On slippery surfaces, for example in winter, the Accent goes into a drift with a sharp maneuver, but with fast taxiing and increased traction it is quite easy to level it.

Our “experimental” could be awarded a higher mark, if not for one feature in his behavior. When you turn the steering wheel at a small angle, the steering sensitivity rises too sharply. Because of this, the car changes direction faster than you expect from it.

Accent slows down just as easily as it accelerates. The deceleration is easy to control, and the start of wheel locking is easy to feel. Braking on both homogeneous and mixed surfaces almost does not take the car to the side, despite the fact that our model "saved" on the ABS as well.

For the sake of controllability and ability to resist tilt, Accent lost something in comfort. On good asphalt and on individual irregularities, the suspension performs its functions well, but if you go along an uneven highway with waves and step defects, an unpleasant vibration appears. On the cobblestone pavement, these "charms" are amplified to obvious discomfort. In this discipline, Accent loses somewhat to Samara and is very reminiscent of Skoda Felicia.

Thanks to the wide door, the entrance and exit for the rear passengers are quite convenient. The right front seat has a pedal for shifting it forward while folding the back. Passing people back, the front passenger re-adjusts the seat. A minor inconvenience, but the Accent is not alone. The two of them are spacious behind, but there’s nothing to hold on to - the handrail is not provided. If the third passenger is behind, then a short trip is preferable.

The average boot volume is 342 liters, with a full-size "reserve" hiding in the floor. It is convenient to load suitcases - the rear threshold is low. If you still did not have enough space in the trunk and you decided to sacrifice rear passenger seats, you will be disappointed: the backrest leans forward only completely and not horizontally. True, the interfering pillow is removed - but rather difficult. Tavria, for example, is more convenient in this sense.

Now about the microclimate. In itself, this concept assumes a certain isolation, independence from environmental conditions. But all is well in moderation: in Accent it is more isolation than independence, which is no longer pleasing. On a hot July day, we felt it well.

The oncoming flow penetrates into the cabin weakly, and the air intake mode from the outside does not give a tangible effect. Even forced ventilation is not very powerful: a noticeable airflow is achieved only with the last position of the revolution lever. If you open the windows, breathing easier. It seems that the interior ventilation was designed with the intention of installing an air conditioner.

In general, we liked the three-door Accent in an inexpensive version. And not only because of a reasonable cost, but also because of its rather expressive appearance with a sports bias. The external data of the three-door Accent corresponds, as we have already noted, to excellent acceleration dynamics: a 1.5 liter engine pulls confidently in all driving modes. The advantages of this compact car we would include the quality of workmanship, spacious passenger compartment and low noise level.

The most significant drawbacks of the Accent are a sharp increase in steering sensitivity from an almost dead zone in the center, ineffective ventilation and the absence of a right mirror.

We attributed the Hyundai Accent to the “interclass” ones and therefore, for comparison (see table), we selected the models that are closest in cost both from class B (small according to the European classification) and from class C (first middle). All of them, to a greater or lesser extent, are inferior to the "Accent" in the dynamics of dispersal.

The smallest - "FIAT-Punto", approximately equal in cost, has an equally roomy interior (but not a trunk) and better handling, as well as a more expressive design with less quality interior decoration.

The compact "SEAT-Ibiza", possessing the advantages of the "FIAT-Punto", is deprived of its disadvantages in interior decoration - the production is Spanish, and the quality is German. The main disadvantages are sluggish dynamics and a relatively high price.

The Skoda Felicia, even with a Volkswagen engine, is still cheaper than the Accent. In many ways, these are close cars, with the exception of acceleration dynamics.

Daewoo Nexia is also slightly cheaper, especially from Uzbekistan. Its advantages include a huge trunk, its drawbacks are its outdated design, engine noise during intensive acceleration and not the best handling.

One of the strongest competitors of Accent in the Russian market is Ford Escort, which is vulnerable, however, because it is equipped with a rather weak 1300 cc engine for the same money, and with a powerful 1600 cc it costs significantly more.

A worthy alternative to the Accent is Renault 19, discontinued in France but manufactured in Turkey. We are going to test this inexpensive car in the near future.

And finally, the VAZ 2110. In our opinion, its lower price than the Accent price (see table) approximately corresponds to the workmanship.

As befits a three-door hatchback, it is the most sporty of all the "accents."

Front panel: inoffensive asceticism.

The large opening of the third door is freedom of access to the trunk.

This version of the Accent, less than its multi-door counterparts, resembles a remnant.

The spoiler on the third door is also an attribute of a sporty style.

Pros:

- dynamics of acceleration

- workmanship

- noise level

minuses:

- ineffective ventilation
