FLYING ON THE WAVES

One morning I'm going fishing. Not far from the reservoir stands on the side of the Niva with a trailer, two are voting. I stop. “They pierced the wheel,” they say, “there is no spare, help get to the shore.”

I look - on a trailer there is a motorcycle under the awning, but not ordinary, on wheels, and a water one - a boat from below, the jet ski is called. Probably, they saw such on TV, when they show "their" rest on the sea-ocean. “Let me ride?” I ask. “As many as you like,” they answer.

Of course, I could not miss such a case - I took out my spare tire. While they changed the wheel, I look at the car on the trailer. The emblem of the Canadian company Bombardier, familiar to me by snowmobiles, and the name “Si Doo” instead of “Ski Doo”, and the model designation are “SP”, are striking. The car is so smooth, clean, bright, like a toy, and just pulls the wheel to sit. On it there is only one control knob - "gas", no pedals at the bottom. It is clear: after all, only the engine speed needs to be changed in order to go faster or slower. Instead of a regular boat propeller, behind the bottom there is a round nozzle. From it go cables, of course, to the steering wheel. So, here the water-jet propulsion - turning the nozzle of its jet, turn the jet ski.

Please show the motor. Having pressed a clamp, recline a seat. In the hold, the engine was freely placed, like the one that stands on snowmobiles, the Rotax company - a two-cylinder, liquid-cooled.

Soon the wheel was replaced, and we came ashore. While I was thinking how we would drag a jet ski into the water, the Niva rolled the trailer back in there. They unfastened the jet ski, and it immediately surfaced. I regretted the trailer - after all, it would rust, but when I pulled it out, the water came off it, like a goose: all cavities were closed, all steel was galvanized. Surely not afraid of sea water.

- Riding on this? - they ask.

- No, I only saw it. But on snowmobiles, where instead of a boat there is a caterpillar, and the landing is the same, I traveled enough.

- Then handle it. Can you swim? Good, but wear a life jacket. For heat, you can pull a wetsuit under it. If you are tumbling, swim up to the stern, turn the jet ski over and climb onto it from the stern. Do not come close to ships, other boats, or swimmers! Well, choose the speed according to the situation. Everything, you can go swimming. In the meantime, we will go to the car service to repair the wheel.

I undressed to swimming trunks, pulled on a vest and sat on a jet ski. I put a spiral cord on my wrist, like a telephone receiver connected to the ignition circuit - if you fall, the engine will stop, the jet ski will not go far. It's like snowmobiles and track motorbikes. He pressed the start button - after a few seconds the engine rumbled. He pressed lightly on the throttle lever and slowly sailed from the shore. My new friends wave goodbye and, apparently, making sure that everything is in order, get into their car.

Now you can swim faster. I give gas - the jet ski briskly rushes forward. The nose rises, the bottom hits the waves, the spray fan. In the open, the wind walks, drives the waves, and the jet ski begins to jump on them, forcing to slow down. Oh, sorry no suspension! The car leans slightly left and right, as if it wants to tumble to one side. This instills some concern, uncertainty - in general, you feel discomfort.

I remembered that I felt the same feelings on a motorcycle when I was riding on the sand for the first time: I lowered one foot or the other to the ground, being safe from falling. When it got tired, I tried to level the motorcycle, adding gas and leaning in the opposite direction, as athletes do. I quickly mastered this technique and drove confidently at a faster than before speed, without being afraid of inclines and without lowering my legs from the steps. Now I decided to see how much the jet ski can bend to before the coup, in order to know the limit to go-swim calmly. Let it fall at the same time. But I didn’t have to swim - the jet ski stubbornly did not want to roll over, even with a strong tilt in the turn! And since you don’t have to bend so hard with a quiet ride, confidence has replaced the alertness. I even wanted to frolic, writing out a pretzel at a good speed. Now I experienced real pleasure on the water.

At some point I heard a scream and, looking around, I saw a man in the water. Waves his hand. Swam up. A pretty woman asks to take her to the beach - "brought her foot down." He tries to portray pain, but, I see, he pretends to be. He helped to sit down and immediately gave almost full throttle - it was necessary to bring the "sick" to the shore faster. The car raises its nose and flies through the water with lightning. The passenger is frightened and, clutching at me, asks to save her from breaking her heart. I dump gas - the jet ski smoothly swims to the shore. We are surrounded by the curious. Some are asked to ride them or their children, they even offer a fee, others want to find out how the car is arranged.

Soon my new acquaintances appear, and I "change" the jet ski on my wheel. Satisfied with each other, goodbye.

Having become interested in these machines, a few days later I went to the dealer of the Bombardier company - to the Super Sport store. Here, it was possible not only to talk with knowledgeable people, but also to photograph some of the models for sale. It is a pity that they could not be tasted on the water. However, I already imagined how a car with engines of 110 or 130 hp would behave, if that, the first - the SP model had, it turns out, “only” 60.

In addition to Bombardier, a leading manufacturer of snowmobiles, jet skis and light boats, which are also sold here, other snowmobile builders such as Polaris, Arctic Kat, Yamaha, and Kawasaki also produce such cars.

Our first swallow appeared - the Neptune jet ski, produced in the Lukhovitsy town near Moscow. Its main difference from foreign ones is the price. If the cheapest Canadian SP (718 cm3, 60 hp) costs $ 7300, and the most expensive GSX (990 cm3.130 hp) costs $ 14 thousand, then ours can be bought for 3800. According to the experience of Russian production of snowmobiles I dare to suggest that only this figure will attract our customers. We do not have such perfect engines as abroad. Maybe there will be some joint ventures that can solve this problem.

I got pleasure
