NEW GINGER DAF

The presentation of the new DAF-95XF truck was held on the very eve of the Brussels Salon, so that none of the guests would have any doubts about the main exhibit of the opening exhibition. They did not arise, partly because there were simply no larger innovations, partly due to the qualities of the flagship of the DAF.

COLOR - LIKE SUNSET …

Probably there was not a single journalist invited to the premiere who would not ask aloud or to himself the question: why is he red? The explanation lying on the surface that this is the national Dutch color (by the way, the football team is “dressed” in it) did not meet with the explicit support of the hosts. This was not the case, or rather, not only this. Let me remind you of the DAF brand color scheme: green (as indicated in the press release, Porsche Green) for the 45th and 55th series and red (Ferrari Red) for the heavier 65, 75 and 85th series; the previous 95th series “dressed” in a yellow dress. The new car needed fresh coloring, but at the same time in harmony with other colors of the range. We stopped at the bright-red and also “sporty” “McLaren Orange”: the energetic, saturated color perfectly matches the image of the new truck. In addition, according to the research of designers, orange will be the color of 1997. The corporate "presentation" color is by no means the only one - the client can choose any other when ordering.

Behind the stunning color, I almost forgot to decipher the name of the new DAF: 95 is the series number, as with previous heavy class cars, and XF means Extra Fort. “Extra” is understandable, but “forte” in music is strong, loud, at the full power of sound. In my very free translation, XF turned into "DZ" - hefty healthy, blood with milk …

But back to the exterior. The main difference from the old "ninety-fifths" is the black language of the radiator lining, although there are others: elongated doors, a modified bumper, side vents. Just three years ago, the Super Space Cab appeared, which hit the automotive world with space (as many as 10 “cubes” of internal volume) and amenities. She and her smaller sisters (Space Cab and Comfort Cab) migrated, repainted, and acquired a completely new interior, in ХF. All this, of course, is drawn to being called the best premiere of the salon. But take a look at the design project (photo below). It is a pity that so little of it was embodied in Extra Fort, and without it, in my opinion, the truck does not reach the title of a completely new one.

But appearance, of course, is a matter of taste, and therefore, to avoid disputes, we leave this topic.

LIVING AREA LIVING AREA

I must immediately warn: my impression of the driver and passenger seats in the 95XF cab is purely “static”, since I had to get to know them only in a truck standing in the room. Nevertheless, I affirm: it is very convenient and, perhaps, cozy. And as for the open space … When, sitting behind the wheel, you look back, the reality exceeds the wildest expectations - at least 80 cm remains to the back wall and all of them are reserved for a magnificent sleeping shelf. Above it - the second - narrower, it can be easily thrown back. Lift your head up - the ceiling is like in your own apartment: the inner height of the Super Space cabin is 2.255 m! The other two lower cabs - 1, 885 and 1, 585 m - there’s someone who likes and can afford it, although here there are two of the same lodges and a similar interior.

Felix III, a mannequin depicting the average person in 2005-2010, helped plan the interior of the cabin. His older brothers were once used by designers of former DAFs. Humanity as a whole is growing, but you can’t rely on a cabin only for tall people. When practicing ergonomics XF, the requirements of three groups of possible drivers were taken into account: 1.65 growth; 1.83 and 1.95 m. As a result, the seat's height adjustment range is 100 mm, in the longitudinal position - 180 mm, the steering wheel goes up and down by 85 mm - such a transformation of the size of the workplace will suit any driver.

The bagel seemed very comfortable: with a diameter of 450 mm, its shape and “plumpness” very much resembled that of a passenger one. Yes, and it is located not close to the horizontal, as is customary in trucks, but tilted by 30 … 45 ° - it depends on the desire of the driver.

In the front wall above the windshield are a chest of drawers, a sideboard, a secretary, a slide - whatever you want. Three clothing compartments in the Super Space provide the driver with full scope for imagination: what to put there? Perhaps, you can put a microwave on average - you need to heat food from a regular refrigerator under the lower shelf somewhere!

I liked that the driver’s and the shiftman’s places are clearly separated by the protruding middle part of the instrument panel: on the left is the workplace, on the right is the rest area. In general, the impression of the cabs is this: at the DAF they know a lot about the arrangement of the interior and are very careful about "His Majesty the trucker." But this is not the only "horse" of the company. The second one I would call engines.

SILENT MOTOR

In motor engineering, the Dutch always walked a little ahead of time. In 1959, they were among the first to use turbocharging, and in 1973, for the first time in Europe, they introduced truck intermediate cooling (intercooler) by truck. Later, they always went to the leaders in terms of meeting environmental requirements - back in 1992 they had met Euro-1 standards and three years before the mandatory introduction of Euro-2, in 1993, they had fulfilled them. In the near future, DAF is ready to offer an engine modification that already meets the Euro-3 requirements.

And now such a motor (but so far according to Euro-2 standards) is being put on the new 95XF family. It is in contrast to the loud name of the car - "Forte" has a very low noise level. Experts believe that only the hooding or encapsulation of the engine can not fundamentally solve the noise problem. Therefore, the new unit is designed so that vibration and sound during engine operation are minimal. On average, the new engine is 4 decibels quieter than its predecessor and is among the best world models by this indicator. The six-cylinder diesel engine with a volume of 12.6 liters with direct fuel injection, of course, is equipped with a turbocharger with intermediate cooling and can be performed in three versions: 280, 315 and 355 kW (381, 428 or 483 hp). The engine has two block heads (each for three cylinders) and, like many modern engines, 24 valves - two inlet and outlet for each cylinder. There are no new-fashioned pump nozzles - the “good old” in-line Bosch high-pressure fuel pump without any control electronics allows quite worthy characteristics to be obtained - both in terms of harmful emissions and power.

There is a genuine “highlight” in the motor - the DEB (Daf Engine Brake) system - a motor brake. In addition to the shutter blocking the exhaust system, a valve control device is installed here. During engine braking, it interferes with the functions of the gas distribution mechanism at the end of the compression stroke, opening the exhaust valve and relieving pressure in the cylinder. At the next stroke (working stroke - all valves are closed), the piston, going down, slows down under the influence of rarefaction in the cylinder and, accordingly, slows down the rotation of the crankshaft.

It is implemented simply (see “X-ray”): a mechanism is installed in the upper part of the head of the unit that presses one of the shoulders of the lever that opens the exhaust valves. When the piston goes up during compression, one valve opens, but so that it does not break on the piston, a special recess is made in the bottom of the latter. During DEV operation, braking power of up to 290 kW develops.

In fairness, it should be noted that such a system comes from America. DEV is the fruit of the collaboration between DAF and the Jacobs Winery Equipment Company, USA. By the way, from there the most powerful engine offered for the 95XF model: the 14-liter Cummins VF390 diesel engine develops 390 kW / 530 liters. with. at 1900 rpm

I will not dwell on other systems and units of the new DAF - there is not enough space for this.
