KNOWLEDGE

The time has come - and our family thought about changing the car. The Tavria that served us correctly was still in the “juice” itself - a relatively low mileage in three years, the normal condition of the units and the body, as well as the traditional “anti-corrosion alarm-music” made it possible to ask for two thousand dollars. To add another one and a half or two thousand to a new one was quite within our means.

But then the question arose: do we really need Tavria? It seems that in many ways it suited us: economical, fast enough, maneuverable, easy to repair, even reliable (single vagaries in the way such as a failed electromagnetic valve or a tightly clogged gasoline filter can be ignored) - just … not " country "this car, overloading it is not good. So it turns out: mom, dad, daughter and grandmother get into the car, put the stroller, groceries, clothes in the trunk, and … everything is full of a box. And where is the crop, building materials?

So, obviously, you need to choose a car more spacious, and at the same time more powerful. Desirable - as new as possible. Of the "Lada", of course, the Quartet was best suited - but our finances would be enough only for a used car … no, it doesn’t. "Eights" and "nine" are godlessly expensive and, by the way, are also not very spacious. The new “forty-first” looked attractive, but it hasn’t been on sale for almost a year now, and, in addition, it is not included in our small “shell” in size. “Volga” and “Niva” as the machines of our family, we do not represent. Foreign car? Buy, of course, you can only keep it expensive, especially very used. What is left? Virtually nothing but …

Purely by chance, in an advertising newspaper, my eyes fell on the announcement of the sale of … the new “412-x” “Muscovites” of the Izhevsk plant at a price of about 22 million rubles. However, the archaic look of the car and the build quality were discouraging: some trim parts were missing in the cabin, and most importantly, the rear seat was delivered later and only for a fee of 350 thousand rubles (it turns out that it is not included in the price of the car!). In response to our perplexity, the seller stated:

“What did you want for that price?” Need a car - buy a Lada or Orbit …

And then his gaze fell into the far corner of the courtyard, where two copies of the rarest domestic car really were sheltered …

- How much is?

- Thirty-three million …

So, the prospect did not smile, because in all cases it would be necessary to tighten the belt by a couple more holes. But what to take? Five, six, or maybe Orbit? The price is almost “Zhiguli”, but what about consumer qualities? In a word, before making a choice, the “dark horse” should be examined more closely. And we again went to the store.

Sellers were not surprised at our request. We examined the engine compartment, interior, looked under the bottom, asked about the details. And in order to specifically assess the advantages and disadvantages of the proposed purchase in comparison with the "five", they took paper and a pencil. The result is ten to three in favor of Orbit. From the following text, everyone will understand what we considered to be an advantage and what was a disadvantage.

Three days later, taking where possible, we arrived with the required amount. Of the two “orbits”, we chose the one in which the engine started immediately and worked more evenly, in addition, all the rugs were in place. Among the tools and additional equipment was not found only the tire pressure gauge put on the list. Despite a rather cold day, the car warmed up quickly (after reaching three kilometers after refueling, we heard the electric fan of the cooling system buzzing under the hood), and we could turn on the “stove”. Her motor was almost inaudible, and the spacious interior was immediately filled with pleasant warmth. The car was going smoothly, confidently took the lift, without a knock, overcame the tram tracks and … at the first attempt rolled into the “shell”, easily turning at right angles where the “Zaporozhets” had just been taxiing.

It is time to introduce the car. Let's start with the exterior. The front of the Orbit has something from the Ford Scorpio, the taillights resemble the Sierra, and the profile is a five-door Hyundai Pony. But in general, his appearance, one might say, is memorable.

Now I’ll ask for the salon. Look, the doors close almost hermetically - the seal is just great. Just have to clap them loudly for now - the locks require adjustment. What is - there is no habitual locking button? Yes, the lock is unusual here, but I’ll tell the owners of the car how to use it later - the rest is useless. The seats are comfortable, upholstered with a soft cloth to touch the back of the headrest, it is not necessary to bend the neck back. The backrest can be folded in parts (1: 1), without removing or extending the pillow. For all five passengers, seat belts are provided, and for four - inertia, and the middle one at the back will be pleased with the waist belt. Oh, just don’t rape the windows of the rear doors: the windows in them fall by only a third, not further. This is not a malfunction, but a design feature, which, however, is not a plus.

A heavy torpedo slightly presses on the driver and front passenger. Well, let it: this does not interfere with the review. The instrument panel - from the "forty-first", with a tachometer, but without an indication of the included "suction". Steering wheel - wow! - from the "eight", only on top of the word "LADA" glued "IL". All buttons and knobs are quite reachable, however, the gear lever sticks out at an unusually sharp angle to the floor, located almost horizontally when the second and fourth gears are engaged, as well as reverse. The latter is stuck tightly, probably the mechanism has not worked out. Between the front seats on the floor tunnel are an ashtray and an armrest, under the cover of which it is probably convenient to store tape cassettes. By the way, a radio tape recorder is included in the standard equipment of the machine, but it is not installed, but is attached in a bag. The speakers, however, are already in place - in the plastic sides of the trunk.

Yes, and what is in our trunk? Well, he, of course, is wider than that of Tavria, but this huge reserve is just … No, no, she is here temporarily, her place is outside, under the floor, almost like the "forty-one". Behind the license plate is a small niche with a plastic cover - for a regular set of tools. Near the trunk light bulbs (they work, however, only when the side light is turned on). The luggage compartment is closed by a dense shelf. It is located quite high and a little interferes with the review back - you will need to get used to it. Inside the trunk, as in the cabin, there’s not a piece, not a patch of metal body: everything is covered with plastic panels and a rug. The plastic is pretty thin, it may creak while riding - well, we can handle this.

And now, while the female half gets used to the salon, the male will look under the car - there are a lot of interesting things. Front suspension - McPherson struts, in the wheel hub - a double-row ball bearing that does not require adjustment and lubrication. The levers are connected by a powerful anti-roll bar. The rack and pinion (!) Steering gear hangs unusually low - traction leads to the steering knuckles, and not to the racks. Under the hood (by the way, very small) it is spacious, a large aluminum radiator with an electric fan catches your eye. The shape of the washer reservoir deserves the prize of the Union of Designers of Russia. True, its motor, as well as the ignition coil, are located on the spar itself … but are protected from splashes and dirt by a wide black shield.

Let's move further inland. The gearbox is five-speed. It is followed by a split propeller shaft with a "Zhiguli" elastic coupling and an outboard bearing. Orbita inherited the rear axle gear, crosses and bearings of the rear wheels from the 412th, but its semiaxes have its own (of different lengths) and the Zhiguli wheels with corresponding rubber. The rear suspension is vaguely reminiscent of a “Lada”: two trailing arms, two oblique, transverse bar, springs and shock absorbers.

The reason for the ride was not long in coming - I had to go to the traffic police for registration. While the line was frozen by the trailer on the street, we were thrilled with heat in a soft cabin. More than once, curious people came up to the car, including dropping new “fives” and even “Volga” to the site. The traffic police major was quite surprised at the record in the reference account: “Wow, Moskvich has become more expensive than Zhiguli! I had to correct it - not “Moskvich”, but “Orbita”, the traditional cars of “Izhmash” are her only fellow countrymen, not relatives. It’s just that conveyor production cannot be set up yet, and therefore there aren’t any sales of “standard” spare parts, and no literature on operation and repair …
